I figured out why this is such a heinous crime (other than the obvious reasons, of course).
FFVII was always the most relatable story of the series. It was about a bunch of nobodies trying to do their best in a world that quite honestly isn't so far removed from our own, generally speaking. Sure, it was still highly fantastical and had its fair share of ridiculous moments, but overall the game had this comfy feeling that it could actually be a reality in a not-so-distant future. The addition of the ghosts and the ridiculously animu ending takes a big fat shit on all of that.

I just finished it today. 37 hours. Didn't rush through, but didn't do hardly any of the sidequests either. It was fine.
I played this immediately after replaying FF7, and Honestly, I can kinda see where they're coming from with the whole Time Dementors thing.
Final Fantasy 7, and ESPECIALLY The Midgar portion of Final Fantasy 7, has three really big problems, story-wise.
1) it's extremely disconnected from the rest of the game
2) It establishes Ancients, but doesn't even hint at what they are or what makes them special, the game just takes it as a given that they are, and
3) Sephiroth is mentioned by name, but isn't set up in any way. The first time you even see him for any significant ammount of time is in the flashback immediately after Midgar, but even that's kind of disjointed, because we're learning the hows and the whys about Sephiroth's motivations, without really learning what those motivations even really are.
If you're going to remake Final Fantasy 7, and especially if you're going to remake the first 6 hours of Final Fantasy 7, stretching them out to 40 hours, you're going to want to do three things to fix those problems
1) Establish it more firmly within the overall setting of Final Fantasy 7
2) Establish the true nature of the Ancients, or at least *why* they're as revered and valued as they are, at least above "A girl who's a magic girl in literally no way other than we say so"
3) Establish Sephiroth as a villain, and an active and driving force in the story as early and intensely as possible
And FF7R does all of those things extremely well.
