I was considering picking up one of these bad boys to combat my cabin fever >last console I actually wanted as a kid before I submitted to the PC mustard race, so muh nostalgia >might as well get it since corona might fuck me up >lots of games I want to play that are on it >can be had from ebay for cheaper than what most indies charge for RPi handhelds
What are some reasons I should NOT pick one up? I heard SNES emulation on it sucks, but playing GBA ports of SNES games should be sufficient as a workaround for most of the SNES games I was feeling like playing anyway
because you can just use a mouse and keyboard and emulate one for free, the nostalgia of playing a handheld wears off quickly >save your cash
Logan Adams
Some anons reported that the hinges easily give out but I have never experienced that though everyone agrees that it is a bit painful on the palms when playing for a couple of hours. The battery is excellent, too. For emulation, the DS Lite is capable but not every game works on it, so you'll just have to test which games work and don't. The DS also has some fun homebrew games if that's your thing.
Benjamin King
A 3ds is better if you want to do homebrew, plus it can already play ds games natively.
Connor Bennett
Genuinely a very good investment, got mine used for 35$ a few years ago and I just pop in a flashcart and have played a bunch of shit. DS Lite is comfiest model. But DS can't really do SNES.
Nicholas Gomez
Just got one from Ebay last month. Totally worth it over PC emulation based on that portability. Max comfy. As another user pointed out, 3DS can play all DS games so it just depends on what you want and what you're willing to pay.
The d-pad is kinda sucky, and the start and select buttons are trash. The 3DS is just better, since you can homebrew it and get GBA emulation in like 10 minutes, as well as have access to more games in general.
Aiden Edwards
Get a N3DS if you can runs GBA, DS and 3DS natively and has better SNES emulation
Lucas Powell
Spend more money and get a new 2ds xl and a flash cart. You will be able to play >DS >3DS >GB >GBC >GBA >NES >SNES >Master System >Genesis >SCUMM games (Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Sam and Max) >Some PSX games. Square RPG's work pretty good. >DOOM >Quake >Duke 3D All for less than $200
As a person who bought an used DSLite: do not get the white edition. These were the first batch of the console and have a hardware flaw where the PCB will suffer a microscopic fracture from repeatedly pressing ABXY and will turn off whenever you press the face buttons.
The DSLite runs Super Nintendo but you'll need a Supercard DS Two, significantly increasing the cost. If you really wanted to play Snes at a similar price I'd suggest getting a regular New 3ds or a 2DS XL, you'll get access to 3DS, GBA, GB, Nes, Snes and Genesis games. The regular 2DS also works but imo it's kinda ugly, the good news is that it's the most reliable member of the 3ds family
Lucas Morales
>i believe GBA is non native, but it's an official emulator so it does the job well. Nope it's 100% native on the built in GBA hardware, I've even tested it using ROMs of Nintendo's debugging/repair tools and it passes 100% of the tests. AGB_FIRM injects take advantage of the GBA HW
Dominic Walker
Kek, I live in NJ and picked up a new 2DSXL for $150 last Christmas at a Walmart near me.
Jordan Allen
Had some powerful experiences on it. Play TWEWY. GOAT game.
Aiden Myers
not OP, but I was wondering, as someone who's hasn't played on a ds for ~14 years, and looking to get one that can play any *ds/gb* games, should I get a (new) 3dsxl or (new) 2dsxl?
Can gameshark/codebreaker/ar/etc. be used in both?
Jaxson Reyes
oh, does seedminer not work for 2DS consoles?
Robert Taylor
That's cool. Why did they include GBA hardware if they never released GBA games for it? Aside from the few in the ambassador program.
Nicholas Thompson
You can also get a cheap bluetooth controller to connect your phone. DS/GBA/GB/SNES/PSP emulation is perfect on android and you can get a bluetooth controller with a phone holder for 50~70 dollars. >get 3DS I like my 3DS and it can run DS/GBA/GB/SNES perfectly but the 3DS' dpad placement kinda suck for anything other than an actual 3DS game. Also youre sinking ~200 dollars instead of 20~50 dollars for a DS lite but you do get to play some 3DS games.
Jason Davis
Buy a New 3DS instead, since it can play all DS games.
Jose Perry
If you don't have GBA games you'd want to play on it, picking up a 3DS model is probably better since it can access 3DS library as well as the DS library.
Isaiah Cruz
I think every new in box 2ds/3ds has too high of firmware for that.
Jeremiah Miller
according to the main 3DS hacking guide (which is not super clear and honestly kinda shit) the process is no different. 2DS software is exactly 3DS software just without the 3D hardware.
Josiah Baker
isnt seedminer an all firmware hack?
Benjamin Evans
all 3ds software is the same, I hacked mine on the latest firmware, I can still play online just dont turn on spotpass/ agree to send your 3ds data to nintendo
Hudson Sanchez
A 3ds is a better investment, but I think ds games look like shit on its screen. I need those big chunky pixels for original ds games.
The DS assigns the GBA ARM7 + GPU to one screen and the DS ARM9 + GPU to the other and games can make use of both. To keep HW BC with the DS the 3DS contains a copy of the GBA HW too
Samuel Price
As someone who just recently modded a GBA(ags-101 backlight, amp & speaker, rechargable battery, also a flashcart) I would recommend getting a DS with a DSTwo cart over it. It's way cheaper and less work. Also, all them fucking DS games.
So thats latest firmware isnt it, no reason not to do it.
Jackson Perez
>modding a GBA >instead of just using a vita
I mean I respect just the pleasure of the modding itself but as far as practicality you would have been better off with the Vita.
Brandon Perry
emulation is always inferior, so no.
Camden Rivera
got one of those too
Ryder Myers
Thats just a really dumb comment to make. I assume you're a brainlet who can't figure out emulators? They can take work but they arent ALWAYS inferior, they arent inherently inferior and there is a convenience factor to take into account.
Noice. It never made sense why the Advance didn't have a backlit screen at launch, or at least a model with one. It was a piece of tech that existed at the time. And fuck the SP.
Leo Young
You can get a refurbished 3ds xl for less on Nintendo's website.
Samuel Cooper
just get a 3ds instead and set up cfw so you can play both ds games and 3ds games
Ian Parker
OP just so you know. The SNES emulation on DS runs fine the only problem is that the DS resolution is smaller than SNES resolution. So emulation cuts out a few horizontal lines. The real drawback of it is that it makes games with small text, like RPGs, really frustrating to read.
Joseph Mitchell
runs almost perfectly. didnt notice any framerate issues but there were some audio issues here and there. btw do you know if you can get filters on your vita retroarch for gba games?
Henry Robinson
I made a CRT filter which was not really a filter at all but a transparent overlay that slightly darkened every other line. Looks aight.
Kayden Johnson
Great console if you get one without a fucked hinge I had mine since launch, but my brothers hinge gave out after a short while when we were young. Be aware; you CANNOT emulate GBA games from Slot 1 (DS cart), you have to use a slot 2 flash cart like Ez flash, who in particular supply an extra shell for the cart to fit flush with the lite system. Some games will be a little choppy, even if you buy a good SD card and flashcart. Chinatown wars and most Pokemon games are a little bit slower and will annoy you if you've played them before.
Jayden Butler
Would suggest to play DS games on the console it was made for. I thought the 3DS (original ver.) was less comfortable to hold and DS mode was either stretched out pixels or a tiny resolution for correct aspect ratio because of differences in pixel density. Dunno if the later revisions fixed any of that
Caleb Murphy
>the DS resolution is smaller than SNES resolution
Not that guy, but OEM beats emulation any day. Nothing beats putting a cart into the system, or the flick of the switch. The feel of the console is a part of the enjoyment.
William Parker
You have a fundamental misunderstanding about emulation, they are always inferior. Software level interpretation will always have flaws and provide results that are not as good as the real thing. Convenience comes at the cost of quality and emulators are very convenient.
Stop acting like they're hard to figure out, I've used emulators for 20 years now.
Blake Stewart
SNES res is lower than NES too Nintendo doesn't really give any fucks about resolution
Cameron Torres
>runs almost perfectly. didnt notice any framerate issues but there were some audio issues here and there. You talking GBA emulation through Vita?
I honestly still use PSP emulators because mGBA hasn't caught up and I havent had much luck with Retroarch, although in theory RA should have some cores from the same emulators. But I load into Adrenaline and use mostly gpSP Kai for almost every game and then TempGBA for the Golden Sun games. Sounds counter-intuitive but it works out better because mGBA doesn't seem to have filter support and I hate looking at raw pixels, so adrenaline has its own filters you can apply (LCD3X looks the best to me) and then the emulators themselves can filter the textures if you want. So the combination of those two ends up looking great.
I normally use Mother 3 as my test game since the art in that game is so clean.
Josiah Richardson
2DS XL > Vita > DS Lite. 2DS can run CFW, run 3DS/DS games natively, and can run SOME PS1 games, as well as N64 titles. Vita is a great choice too, but imo it was a a lot easier to Homebrew my 2DS XL than my Vita, and still being able to use my 30+ DS/3DS carts was important to me.
John Thompson
Have both and I'd say you would want a 3DS purely on build quality, user. NDS lasted me a long time but the wear on the buttons is really noticeable.
Landon Brooks
Get the latest nightly retroarch version with the gpSP core. You also need to get the bios file. They updated the core and it runs really well now.
Austin James
any 3dsbros is it safe to update a 3ds with cfw installed if i havent touched the system in over a year
Austin Clark
A ds lite with a cheap chink flashcart is fucking awesome. Ive been playing pic related currently. Great library, and i picked up a gba flashcart to use in the second slot. The only problem is the battery is a bit shot now.
Except for having better controls and more convenient controls and having a huge chunk of your games in one spot and also the fact that most of you wouldn't be able to tell the difference for any game pre-PS2.
The console is in no way part of the experience for me. Playing a PS2 game without having to use a dogshit PS2 controller, not stuck to the console, with barely any load time, at 5x the native resolution (or more if you want, I only ever really push it to 3k res) is far and away the best way to play those games to me. With certain PS2 games you will have to tweak setting in the emulator to fix certain bugs, but this is where not being a complete brainlet comes in. Pre-PS2 emulation is mostly perfect on PC.
I mean god damn guys, how can you even make this argument when the objectively best way to play Breath of the Wild is on PM through Cemu? Its offensive that you would even say this dumb shit to me.
Brayden Butler
too bad we'll never play the sequel
Kevin Price
The PS2 controller is great and numerous games require its exclusive features lmao, you must only play the really obvious ps2 games everyone already played.
Zachary Cooper
Why not?
Austin Morgan
most of the recommended games are now playable on emulator, which has options to make the games look and run better than original hardware. taking a risk with wear and tear some games are more expensive now, compare to release. three reasons not to off the top of my head. it really depends on how much you care about physical hardware
Luke Garcia
>require its exclusive features lol like what? the pressure sensitive face buttons? i honestly can only think of MGS that uses it and it was fucking stupid and annoying. Press square to aim, press slightly harder and let go to shoot.
I can send you a list of the ISOs I have and play, most of them are pretty common Im not sure what the dig is there, but they all emulate really well. Right now Im playing God of War 2. Not much of a deep cut but id gladly put it up against real hardware and actually see a neutral party pick between which they'd rather play. And it isnt a graphics whore thing, I love those classic PS2 era graphics but they look magnificent when upscaled, its so impressive. Its a testament to their design.
