Most of the games do that, with the exception of 3 which has jumpscares that don't kill you which is why I don't like it very much.
I think the one that scared me the most is either 4 or SL's Private Room because they're the ones I'm the worst at playing, 4 requires you to listen which fucks me over because I have bad hearing, and Private Room is extremely unforgiving with its energy consumption and timing from 4 AM onwards since Ennard can rush through multiple spaces in a few seconds.
Also the keypad sequence, I have terrible pulse so that one always fucks me up.

The idea goes that William Afton made a fear sound that causes robots to take the form of somebody's perception of them.
The Nightmares are so edgy and nightmarish not because a brain damaged child is imaginig them, but because William's fear sound caused kids to all see them as edgy robots.
It's pretty shaky though.
