Is it true the first episode doesn't even focus through the entirety of midgar? It's only half of it? I definitely don't remember the midgar sections being all that long. What are they doing with the pacing for this game?

People who have the game claim that those 'spirit' things are some sort of time guardians, they prevent stuff from happening that isn't supposed to happen. Apparently the Seph you see in game is from the 'future', somehow he came back in time to try to trick cloud and co. into doing something to cause other events to happen, even though the party sees a particular vision 'of the future' by the time they leave Midgar. But you'll probably have to play yourself to develop your own theories but as it stands stuff seems to have changed.

One of the largest complaints about the original apparently is not being able to explore midgar even though it was such a large place. So they tried to go in depth with it for an entire episode devoted to it, even though near the end of the story you return. It should cover all of the first part of midgar since in the last trailer you see the party fighting Motorball which is (outside of an alleged new seph encounter) the last boss before you leave for the first time.

Basically most of the plot of Midgar is intact if tweaked for more characterization than a '97 game to fall in line with other materials. But these history nigga Whispers/Watchers of Fate keep appearing throughout the game to make sure characters die where they should and live where they shouldn't die, trying to keep the OG plot in order. Sephiroth, implied to be the post-AC one somehow, has hopped to the remake's alternate timeline and is literally trying to remake the storyline by altering its course and getting the ghosts to fuck off.

It doesn't retcon the original story, so much as it becomes a sideline timeline where shit goes off the rails at the very end of Midgar.
