Thoughts on this series? Where did it go wrong and where did it go right?
Thoughts on this series? Where did it go wrong and where did it go right?
series was confirmed fuck the moment Gaybrohood was announced
On brotherhood now, playing through the entire series.
Modern day story is retarded and should never have been a thing.
The only problem I have with the series is that the tutorials are complete shit. Each game acts like you never fucking played the previous one
>Where did it go wrong
Introducing ayy lmaos instead of keeping it as historical fiction
I stopped after 2.
Once I realized how popular the games became and how boring most of the 2 games were, I knew that shit was going to get assfucked and milked for all it's money possible.
unity is the only good asscreed game
>I stopped after 2.
You missed out on black flag, the best in the series.
I only played the first two, but remember generally enjoying them quite a bit. the economy was a bit weird in the second though, I owned a lot of shit yet was supposedly a mysterious figure in the shadows. Didn't feel right.
Play Ezio trilogy, Black Flag and Rogue
Watch summaries of AC1 and maybe 3 if you want to see Desmond's story play out.
>Where did it go wrong
>boring character
>boring location
>fucked up an already shit modern day storyline
>haytham far more interesting than connor
>yank pandering
>completely abandoned all plot lines after it
Bought the first one at a midnight launch jesus fucking christ 13 years ago... Loved it. Couldn't get enough of it. Everyone was talking about it. It was the absolute shit back then. 2nd one came out and it was more of the same. Then brotherhood and revelations it really started to go south. By the time 3 hit it was a meme that people bought just because they played the others and they were invested. Pretty much everything up to Black Flag was a golden experience at the time. Even black flag is 7 fucking years old.
I know this is the absolute worst answer according to this board, but my favorites are Rogue, Syndicate and Odyssey with Liberation getting a mention because I like the setting and protagonist.
Black flag is a tedious slog
What's it like having no taste?
it was genuinely interesting until brotherhood and then 3 it straight up shit the bed and they had no idea what to do
Opportunity to create a series that has basic stealth and action gameplay in a variety of settings through human history using a very simple idea of "assassin's v Templars". Each game could have been a stand alone game from a different era about a character, how they join the assassin's and their adventure ie what made ac2 so good.
They fucked up when they decided to link all of these with a modern day sequence. Each game being a simple stand alone would have freed them to do so much more and even play around with the different gameplay styles. Stealth in a Japanese setting. All out horse and combat in Mongolia etc. They tied their fate to a modern story and it sunk all their chances. Each AC game could have stood on its own and with different dev teams working on different games we could have had an amalgamation of the best aspects of each era in new games going forward.
I absolutely loved 1 for all its flaws, 10/10 setting and world building. Think I watched the trailer 1000 times.
it's trash.
Also that formula of random character in a diff era and his adventures and somehow joining the assassin's is again what made black flag so good. Assassin shit took a backseat to the amazing new setting and time and a simple story about a character
syndicate is for gays
Black flag felt like they were testing how an assassins creed game would work without actually being an assassins creed game. Seems to have worked as we ended up with Origins and Odyssey which are exactly that.
Brotherhood while a fun game was the beginning of the milking of the franchise, so you could argue it was the beginning of the end, but quality really started going downhill with Revelations.
It's sad because this series used to be special before the extreme cashflow it came to be
>first assassins creed came out in 2007
>99% of Yas Forums wasn't even a teenager when it came out
>most act like they wasn't even born yet
>they most likely tried to play it on steam
>they never got to expsence it when it was the only game of it's kind
no wonder most people here say the first one is shit
>black flag, the best in the series
When will people stop parroting this shitty meme?
All the shanties in the world won't save you from the fact that half the game is tailing missions, even on boat.
1 and 2 were great
i agree with most of what you wrote but towards the middle parts and end going around completing different contracts is actually fun and the tomahawk combat is pretty cool, albeit easy.
doing missions/side missions in the thundering rain is pretty kino too. this game has some good parts but its a massive grind, too long and story is shit
It's a fun pirate game and at the last second had the AC title slapped onto it. The key success was dropping all that supernatural miracle shit and let us just skim by all modern day story.
I never played the other games but it's probably already tainted by the AC title. At this point it's a stay away badge for me which is a shame as they definitely do different settings better than any other
I mean all the games are tedious by your metrics, black flag had the coolest characters and story out of any of the games in the series, and it had great music, the ship battles were pretty fun, I mean it really was the series peak, ESPECIALLY after 3
Black Flag marked the death of the series with its popularity, now every game has to have boat shit. It was one of the worst things to happen along with desmond's death
the entire series was shit. even the second blows cock
The Apple of Eden was a thing in AC1.
The uber advanced ancient civilisation was always going to be part of the series.
Moving away from the modern day was a big mistake
The precursors were one of the best parts
Origins and Oddy were steps backwards after Unity though, which was a buggy mess, but overall a huuuge technical improvement over previous titles for the movement and combat, despite its wasted story and characters and now the games are just generic heavily lvl based looter RPGs, Origins had some cool stuff in it, but it dragged on for way too long and the story sucks, especially since they feel the need to force some sort of female lead in EVERY game because they got bitched at by people over Unity.
This is the only bit about them I liked.
>Where did it go wrong and where did it go right?
First game, never recovered. II was overrated shite well-received by normies who put up with the first, Black Fag rode the coattails of the dearth of pirate games.
This series has never been good and you're deluding yourself thinking it ever was.
t. Troopher currently slogging through III for the TROOPHS
Why? You can't even get the plat since nobody plays MP anymore.
You must be really bored to go through such a slog of a game. All those shit collectables would kill me.
Went wrong with Assassin's Creed II by turning the series away from stealth into generic action adventure. Then the franchise plummeted into freefall by the time Patrice DĂ©silets left in the middle of Brotherhood's development.
The direction for Assassin's Creed recovered somewhat with III, then IV revitalized it with some good assassination missions and the return of the assassin's bureau from the first game. Unity was the peak of social stealth for the franchise. Then Ubisoft Quebec becomes a lead developer and they make Syndicate and Odyssey, both of which are trash games.
You still can and you'd be surprised how active this shitfest still is on PS3.
The bad
>wonky parkour controls
>batman combat, no sense of danger
>templars bad, assassins good storyline
>no openess, follow this sequence to get to your target
>barebone stealth
>collectables
Forcing yearly releases really killed all momentum this series and made it a bogged down mess. I also agree with several comments about the modern day story holding it back.
As much as I loved the conspiracy puzzles in 2, that stuff wasnt really needed.
Guess I'm out of luck, then. All that stops me from getting the Brohood plat is two MP trophies and it's been bugging me for a while.
>why yes, I do think Rogue is best in the series thanks to it's usage of all the good mechanics from Black Flag while adding a large city and interesting mechanics such as stalkers and adding on to the sympathetic Templar story line that started with Haytham, how could you tell?
Ass Creed III was a half finished game stuffed with mechanics that are pointless... like hunting for resources and shit.
>which are exactly that.
But Origins is an AC game when you boil it down, it just has the leveled loot gatekeeping you and dumbed down parkour. You have to hunt down information on your target, you learn about them through constant visits, you reveal the lies of the Order of Ancients, then Bayek finally has an assassination attempt where you have to infiltrate and kill the person at which point you get a Memory Corridor and more truths to the entire situation. It also heavily pushes assassinations and stealthily picking people off with the bow. The Order of Ancients are prevalent throughout the entire game, the large conspiracy is prevalent throughout the entire game, and there's ideological differences between Bayek, Aya, and the Order that constantly get hashed out.
Odyssey immediately throws that out the window. The game doesn't even make an attempt at pushing stealth situations on the player, I can think of maybe one Cult of Kosmos member who actually had a typical AC assassination setup and that was Elpenor's assassination I.E. the first Cult member. Everyone else either walks around the overworld, sits in the overworld always aggro with no way to sneak to them, or outright attacks you. Even Swordfish does that as soon as you find him. They also don't even bother with forcing stealth situations onto you to find information until the DLC of all things.
The Eagle Bearer chooses based on your choices and never has an ideological conflict with the Cult at any point with the exception of a discussion with Aspasia. TEB is basically [Hate Cult] but canonically Kassandra lets Aspasia go. TEB also constantly flip flops on their opinions of everyone, chooses both Sparta and Athens, doesn't really give a shit about Greece or its politics, doesn't care about the Cult outside of wanting to kill everyone because they ruined their life, and generally just doesn't give a shit and is divorced from everything.
It baffles me people say this, from AC 1-3 the common conesnsus was that the modern day shit was a waste and the series should just be purely historical
>Replaying Ac4
>retrive the letters inside the fortress
>go through the front gates
>kill everyone in one big fight
>get to the top
>kill everyone
>get letters
>walk away from the front gate
>realize the only way to enjoy AC series is to gimp yourself: stealth only, no fights, assasinate only the target
my eyes are open now
That sentiment only started around Rev and that's simply because Desmond was basically in a coma where nothing was happening just to justify more Ezio time while also never letting Desmond do anything. AC1's one major draw was people trying to discover how the Templars and Assassins tied into history and people spent ages decoding all the blood in the lab and then AC2 came out and people were constantly talking about all the conspiracies, trying to piece history in the AC universe together, and talking about The Truth.
They listened to people complaining about the amount of time you spent outside and how often you were taken out after Black Flag and Rogue came out which is why Unity only has very minor things with Bishop, and Syndicate is literally just cutscenes with Shaun having a bunch of character development out of nowhere. The entire reason Layla even exists now is because people wanted more modern day and they realized they messed up hard by ending Juno in a comic.
I can't stand that shit accent that Shay has. It's so bad.
>t. paddy
>It also heavily pushes assassinations and stealthily picking people off with the bow.
Not it pushes doing side content and craft better equips so your hidden blade works and enemies don't get super armor when fighting you.
The Assassin's Creed games were never great, the ones people like the most are just the ones that managed to capture SOUL. They rode off of that.
Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Black Flag had some combination of style, music, atmosphere and characters that made them comfy kino with a lot of character/soul but gameplay wise Black Flag is unironically the only one that had something interesting to offer.
>right
The original game and the idea
>wrong
The audience.People who play video games are retards and I can't believe AC2 was as well received as it was.
I never agreed with that. I thought it was an excellent framing device even if it was irritating from a gameplay standpoint. I wouldn't know it ever became less irritating, I dropped the series when I realized I was playing Assassin's Creed 2 for the third time instead of playing anything new or meaningful.
Nah. I actually liked the future cast barring Desmond. The British historian and the cute tech with a pixie cut that was in New Vegas were very likeable and when they were all just chilling out at the villa in Brotherhood it was kino.
Agree but I really liked Brotherhood's combat. I spent a weird amount of time in the combat simulator mode or whatever it was. Oddly enough, I own Black Flag but never got into it past like an hour or two, and I know that's barely giving it a chance. I think it was just burn out. Haven't played one since.
I found it kinda interesting as a framing device and also to have an overall story between the game. But after killing Desmond it was pretty clear they had no idea what to do with the modern story so it became pointless and the mainline games seemed also pointless as games like Syndicate barely had any story and was already linked with the series through a weak modern day story.
Black flag
>baby tier ship combat
>wind direction doesn't matter at all
>you're up to top speed in a matter of seconds
>reloads that take just seconds, same for changing ammo or changing from which side you are firing
>using cannons at all as a pirate
>can see what other ships are carrying from miles away
>way to busy on the seas
>tailing missions with a boat with a blind spot on the backside of opposing ships
How does any of this make even one iota of sense?! All the strategy and tactics that you need to apply are as deep as a puddle and stronger opponents are nothing more than damage sponges. The main character behaves like an insufferable whiny teenager all game long only to grow a couple of balls and behave like an actual adult in the last 15 minutes of story. No thanks, even SidMeiers' pirates is a better pirate game.
only played ass creed 2, can't that franchise.
Yeah ignore that tard. The framing device was very good, slowly following the development of Desmond from lost soul to embracing his assassin heritage was great and it paralleled the historical stories. Once they got rid of him the modern day story became idiotic baggage that really should have been dropped but that "common conesnsus" is just him huffing his own farts.
Predict something ass creed ragnarok.
The first Assassin's Creed is a timeless classic. The rest of the franchise not so much.
No need to predict
I liked the first 4 games in the series but I think it went downhill in Brotherhood and Revelation. I liked the historical aspect of the game and the modern day stuff. Shame they pissed it all away
Do you complain about the unrealistically simple vehicle controls in GTA games, too?
Im really not interested in the AC aspect of this at all, but playing as a Viking and sailing around Europe with some mythical backdrop here and there is something actually appeals to me
>and adding on to the sympathetic Templar story line
You mean the thing that makes the Assassins act like complete retards and out of character, barely fleshes out any character at all on both sides barring Colonel Monroe, makes Shay out to be a hypocrite who betrays the Assassins because he wants to save civilian lives for a group that will attempt to poison the entire population of Boston just a couple years later on top of executing Native Americans who don't join William Johnson's group (and he will be proud of staying with them), and forces a betrayal so hard that everyone involved in the incident has to act like an alien just so it plays out like it does?
Like I said, it has level gating, but it still pushed stealth on the player constantly.
It could be worse, it could be the Unity plat.
Odyssey and Origins would be much better without the whole grindfest
what's your problem you basterd brotherhood was kino
