VR is never going to take off, it's a niche and it will stay one, the hardware will never, NEVER, get cheaper, you either commit to the price or you buy the really cheap, ones that bearly provide the experience. Brain interfacing will most likely never be a thing you can use for gaming, due to physical limitations and cost. It's going to likely stay a niche experience due to it's physical limitations and that's fine, there's enough room to coexist, if the wii did it, VR can too. Nost stop complaing and save up to get a proper setup.

VR will become cheaper and brain interfacing will be used for inputs. the brain interfacing is a while off, at least a few decades but VR will have more availability and become more advanced over the next few years
there will always be $1k high end VR equipment but I can tell you that in a few years something like the Index will be much cheaper than it is today, it may even be better. it's going to evolve the same way any other hardware does
I don't even have VR but I have experienced a bit of it and I like thinking about what's possible, it may never be a standard but it will be common, just like GPUs did, and even SSDs did, they have all gone through the metamorphosis VR is experiencing
