Why did Doom 3 fail?
Why did Doom 3 fail?
Too unlike DOOM 1 & 2 and generally extremely dark and id was going through some weird shit at the time.
doom 3 still has the best designed imps in the series
gay lantern lmao
it'd be alright if it was called something other than doom
Tried too hard to be a horror game
it didn't though it sold great
Good horror game, bad DOOM game.
bad shotgun
it didn't fail
it was just different to the other games
still awesome on it's own though
Define fail. Most things that end up being treasured and culturally relevant are underwhelming in their time.
It's an FPS with mediocre at best shooting and a horror game with scares so cyclical and repetitive that it actually becomes kinda relaxing a few hours in since you'll know exactly what to expect.
It wasn’t doom.
If they called it doom the spinoff or simply doom if would have “failed” less.
>90% of the game takes place in pitch black darkness
>doom is now a horror game complete with system shock audio logs
>shooting feels like ass and weapon feels good
>slow
>level design is now corridors and my living room
>completely braindead enemy ai
I guess the shading and dinamyc lighting was neat?
it was basically a bad version of Doom 64 + Half Life
That iteration of idtech did everything technical better than half life 2 but character models. Holy shit how do you have godlike textures for the environments but low res and ugly textures for human models? Quake 4 proved the character models didn't have to be so bad and it could handle good facial animations.
>put doom 3 on the box
>its just a tech demo for an engine wearing the skin of a 2 spoopy jumpscare simulator instead of being a fucking doom game
Carmack is an alien psychopath, you think he knows how faces work?
>treasured and culturally relevant
contrarians are really dumb
doom 3 was always seen as the black sheep of the series and that game from when Id was basically in its deathbed
What's funny is that id4 was competing with source to be the new, hotest engine that everyone will use and their first game meant to entice the devs is so fucking dark you can’t see nothing of it’s capabilities.
I don't think you know what that word means friend. It sold really well. Critically and commercially.
didn't it sell well? people thought it was impressive at the time. its not the best game but it was interesting at the very least.
>it sold well so it must be good
Time has proven Doom 3>Half-Life 2
>it didn't sell well so it must be bad
retard
>worst game in its series vs the game that basically changed for games are
Well it means it certainly didn't fail you tard. You should have said, why wasn't it a good doom game or something. Also, OP should fucking kill hi,self for reposting this thread multiple times today.
it sold pretty well, didnt fail at all. The main criticism was they were going for a more realistic retelling of the doom story but were still doing the enemies popping out of wall pockets shit.
They have almost the exact same problems, while Doom 3's darkness equates to HL2's obnoxious physics puzzles.
Someone call a doctor, this user is having a stroke
Used the Doom name. Should've been a new series or at least be a spin off like "Doom: Annihilation Resurrection Return of the Planet..." whatever
>why wasn't it a good doom game
read literally any thread where doom 3 gets mentioned
doom 3 isn't treasured or relevant
its that game no one cares about unless its to see where they saved the hell knight design from
But it didn't?
>By the beginning of 2007, over 3.5 million copies of Doom 3 had been sold worldwide, making it the most successful project by id Software to date.
>calling Doom 3 a "horror game"
Is everyone in this thread a wuss? Enemies just pop out of wall panels like they do in Doom 1+2 and then you blast them with a shotgun. ezpz
So it was a commercial and critical success, and people still like today. Wheres the fail tardo? Did you get filtered or something?
>it sold well so it didn’t fail
How many doom games were made until the bethesda buyout and why did only one third party game use the engine while the source was used by hundreds and hundreds of games?
Diablo 3 also “sold well” but that doesn’t change that it’s a piece of dogshit rejected by the community.
This. Later levels where you have the full arsenal in hell feel good but it’s just not DOOM.
Stop fucking sperging. Yes it was controversial but nonetheless it was a top selling game and no matter how much you whine doesn't change it. Yes it was a better tech demo than a game, no one is arguing about that.
Did you somehow miss the audio logs and actual horror moments like audio cues and moanin/crying in the darkness?
Are you going to say Diablo 3 failed next? Are you really just going to make yourself look even dumber?
Lots of poor design decisions.
lol wait till you see this!
both were mediocre tech demos
>Doom 3's darkness
The lighting and flashlight-gun dynamic are the only interesting things about doom 3 you fucking brainlet. Doom 3 sucks ass in every aspect EXCEPT the technical.
Doom 3 did a lot of things wrong, but I will concede that the imps looked great. The best they've ever looked. I do not care for the scrawny 2016/Eternal design.
I personally didn't mind them dude, I'm just talking to stupid there. I love Doom 3 and Half Life 2. Anticipating what arguments he'd have with it.
>unironic doom 3 defenders
Now i’ve seen everything.
Pathologic contrarianism is real.
Last game I ever pre-ordered. When Trent Reznor pulled out with 5 months before release I knew something was up. When it was delayed, I really knew something was up. I even spent some absurd amount on a Radeon X800XT Pro/VIVO with a bios flash for the 4 extra pipelines just to be sure it would run well.
When I got it home, installed it, and had a choice between a flashlight or a pea shooter in a shitty opening dark corridor section that had been beaten to death by every game since Half Life, I uninstalled it within 30 minutes.
That is why it sucked for me.
/pic related
Firefights taking place in pitch black darkness is not fun.
BFG edition actually “fixes” that by having the flashlight permanently on.
>Pathologic contrarianism
jesus christ cope. It was successful. People like it today and i've never known anyone outside of this shithole that didn't think it was perfectly fine.
name an actual horror game
its a shit doom game deal with it
>People like it today and i've never known anyone outside of this shithole that didn't think it was perfectly fine
Literally rewriting reality in real time.
Good job.
this
Doom 3 has a genuinely underrated mod scene, though. When you put more than just a couple of enemies in a level that's not just a corridor and let it loose, it feels more like Doom than Doom 4 or Eternal.
>When Trent Reznor pulled out with 5 months before release I knew something was up.
Reznor was going to do the soundtrack for 3? Damn, that could have done some good for it.
Maybe you sweaty boomers who sperg out about your faggy little quake mods didn't like it, but clearly everyone else did.
It was a doom game that had reloading
B-but it made money so it means it was successfull and everybody loved it and not the fact that a bunch of hyped fans went out to buy a first doom game in over a decade, blindly believing that it’s going to be like the first two game!
Stfu haterr!
>TORtanicfags are so mindbroken after failing to stop doom eternal that they've resorted to trying to praise the worst game in the series
>and
Aside from credits and main menu theme does doom 3 even have a soundtrack?
pretty sure its not just soundtrack its the sound effects too
I think he released a pack with what he was working on you can dig up
It sold heaps. What's the matter with you?
>Doom 3 Cyberdemon was so powerful that conventional weapons don't even harm it
Kind of annoying in game since you need to charge the soul cube 4 times to kill the damn thing, but it makes it feel much more imposing when it just shrugs off BFG shots like mosquito bites.
It didn't
God the amount of COPE in this post in unreal.
>cyberdemon is so pathetic you ignore it and kill imps till it dies
It got good reviews back in its day and sold well. What are you talking about?
Rumors ...albeit long time ago rumors is that the 'Ghosts 1-4' Albums may have been parts of the game soundtrack. Heresay/grain of salt
It’s really sad.
I dunno why they didn't just add a couple of more difficult demons to that fight. It's easy as piss on any difficulty.
