What's Yas Forums's honest opinion on Valve?

I don't trust them. I don't trust that they are "the good guys of gaming" or whatever. they are a company that makes a lot of money, and primarily they make a TON of money from microtransactions. I don't trust any of their developers.
That's not to say they are bad developers, it's just that I prefer to wait for the fruit to be ripe and I've had my first taste before I start talking about how delicious it is.

Gaben is using the company to make brain computer interfacing, he's afraid of death because he's old and fat so he wants to transfer his consciousness to a computer.

I'm pretty sure they're the only independent company outside of EPIC that's a middle-sized studio.

Steam was dogshit when it dropped, but it has improved immensely and has a slew of dev- and consumer friendly features.

And let's not forget the heydays of the internet pre-youtube when Source mods were the bees knees. That engine had so fucking many mods based on it I can't even comprehend it. They did an excellent job cultivating community with Source.

Yeah you really can't say that in all cases

It's quite likely that without valve, pc gaming would simply be nowhere near as large as it is today, and many games that we love wouldn't exist.

I dont understand why so many on Yas Forums are licking gabens ass for half life alyx, i fucking love half life but im not gonna drop my standards just because its half life, game failed to do anything new with VR, half life elements feel watered down and it killed any credibility the story had yet people love it, we will never get a proper sequel if as long valve makes anything half life related and they get a masterpiece star

Valve's era is over sadly. Its crazy how much of a staple they were in the gaming culture. You couldn't find anyone at the time of their peak who didn't know of Valve or who didn't shitpost Valve game related images like TF2. I mean when was the last time you saw a TF2 picture outside maybe 1 or 2 Yas Forums & /vg/ posts? Hell even the longest running joke "HL3 confirmed" fizzled out as quickly as Alyx dropped. No one cares anymore.

Just look at Half-Life: Alyx it already came and went more people are talking about Animal Crossing than a decade old series that just dropped a brand new game. I see Valve like Quake and Unreal, we all know at the time it was hot shit but its drop into obscurity is perceptible.

Sure we could take a peek at Counter Strike's and DOTA's player count and come to the conclusion that Valve isn't dead but majority of those numbers are from Russia & China and we all know that they don't count as real people.

Honestly they're okay, not perfect. Artifact was shit that will never recover no matter how many man-hours they put into it, DOTA Underlords is the same thing, TF2 has been dying since the Meet your Match update, shit like that
When they do good though, they do really fucking good, like Half Life Alyx.

Valve was never good. All of their most memorable games (like Portal and CS) were projects they snatched up from starry-eyed college kids. Even then, these teams are absorbed into the cynical Steam machine, never for their talent to see the light of day ever again.

Their fall from grace was definitely more graceful than all their other old contemporaries from the time.
Bioware, Blizzard, and EA all fell face flat on the ground compared to Valve. Though it has to be said, EA does good stuff rarely from time to time.

And I guess Alyx was pretty neato. Waiting for that Source 2 SDK though .
