It was most prominent in Midgar, but Shinra's fuckery and the Planet were relevant throughout the game. The ending reinforces the themes perfectly.

The enemy for 90% of the game is the evil corporation Shinra. It is only later that the actual enemy is Jenova who was unearthed by Shinra so further their power and profits. Replace "Jenova" with "pollution," and it's literally all the game's about. My only gripe is that Barret never has to come to terms with his terrorist ways until some throwaway line at the end.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but Sephiroth does show an illusion to whichever party member you leave the black materia with at the northern cave. He also takes multiple party members through the real Nibelheim flashback.

All this time, for all these years, since the announcement that it would be "episodic", we've been debating and theorizing on how they would divide the story. Which events in which part? Well, we finally have our answer:

Midgar throwback nostalgia in part one, followed by an untold number of episodes that will be their own, new story only loosely based on the original Final Fantasy VII tale. Holy fucking shit, I expected them to fuck this up by modernizing the original, but this is beyond my wildest expectations.
