The novelty of gmod has long expired. It was really fun to play with source's physics engine when it was brand new, and nothing like it existed.

I never quite got into roleplay in it but the Halo servers always looked pretty good and I'd imagine the Stargate ones were too

It's one of the earliest creation engines / physics sandboxes, and still pretty much the only one on PC.
OG premise was to just use HL2 assets to build stuff out of props and set up fun encounters to play with in a sandbox, solo or online. Then the LUA scripting engine was implemented and people started coding really advanced tools and shit to make even more things, and then custom game modes, most of which are long fucking dead now.
All you'll find is Dark RP and derivatives, and maybe sandbox, and the last few Zombie Survival servers.
