Is XV really that bad, or were people's expectations just too high after so many years of waiting?

I liked it

It's pretty bad. There are worse games you can play, but it's so pointless and wastes your time. Conan had a very accurate review of it despite him being a guy that doesn't play games.

Omg shut up Barry lol XD

It’s that bad.

Playing it for the 2nd time now after not really digesting it the first time. A lot better than I remember story wise but the combat isn't that great. You are either way too under powered or the weapons you have are too OP. The royal arms kinda ruin the game if you use them like any other weapon. They one shot pretty much everything. Game seems to have a hard time with balance but I'm enjoying the story of the bros. Interactions are nice and characters seem to be well written. XV's combat feels like a poor man's attempt at emulating KH2FM combat. It's tolerable but needs work.

Problem is 3-4 engine rewrites, gameplay changes, and massive amount of physics, AI, graphics, and simulation downgrades before it hit the PS4/Pro.

Most of the original gameplay vision of the game is non-existent. Is it bad? Yeah, it's pretty fucking bad.

it's unfortunate but it would not have come out at all if it werent for the changes so calling the changes either bad or good is pointless.

it's a fine game on its own

The game shouldn't have come out at all period.

I got my 30-40 hours out of it and had fun, graphics and music were nice too. It wasn't what it was originally meant to be and that's lame when I dwell on it but I can't sit here and pretend it was legitimately awful or that I'd prefer if it never came out. 7/10 game.

Verum Rex is more or less gonna show me if I would've preferred Vs 13 anyway.

I was so bored I had to reinstall it twice just to make it out of the first area before never playing it again

Utterly mediocre

Dude, Final Fantasy XIII nearly bankrupted the company due to an abomination of an engine. This was so bad that Nomura had to be pulled from FF vs XIV to help take over KHIII as the team for that was pulled into FFXIII to help those teams out--but even they couldn't make shit of what the fuck was going on.

So Square Enix hired Tri-Ace, the guys who got PBR working on the fucking 360 nearly a decade ago. They sorted that shit out, which led SE to make XIII-2 and LR from the left-over assets of FFXIII. So with all the hands of changing positions and the institutional knowledge lost from each migration, FFXIV suffered massively and ended up undergoing several rewrites. The game saw 3 game directors come and go, with Tabatha being the final one.

The fundamental issue is that SE keeps making games that are really for PC, and tries to shove that square peg into the round hole of consoles which are garbage. PS5 and SeriesX might actually, finally, switch that paradigm around for several years and that massive gap won't exist for too long.

Square Enix abandoned all FFXIV DLC plans because any new major additions would cause the game's performance to significantly degrade. Also, another reason why the game runs like such ass on the PS4 and even PS4 Pro, is because the game doesn't bother to cull anything. When the game was first released on the PC, people wondered why the fuck an 8 core top of the line Intel CPU with a 1080Ti was struggling to get above 20fps. Through deep dives, they found out that massively tessellated and fur simulated animals on the other side of the fucking maps were being loaded entirely into memory and were not being culled even when the player and camera were dozens of kilometers away.

That kind of shit is still in engine on the consoles, just no tessellation/fur simulation to autismo levels. They wanted to simulate a full world, but that shit is too taxing for consoles. It's a shit game.

Why?

Your stupid ass doesn't know roman numerals, does it Mr. Krabs.

Its barely good enough to finish and that was after all the patches. You could play it but you wont miss out if you dont.

It is genuinely bad. I was eager to love the game, watched the anime, the movie, and whatever else pre material they had. Was having fun the first 3 chapters but then it just went to complete shit.

Every FF explores the backstory of your party members and the villains but this game just omitted everything in vanilla. The game just skips a bunch of shit and ended. Don't get me started on the shit with Lunafreya who dies after a few letters of contact. Who is anyone, who cares. Left me with such a bad taste in my mouth I didn't even bother with the DLC which should have been aprt of the main game after 10 fucking years. I doubt it saved any of the plot.

FFXV's entire story is lobotomized across a movie, an anime series, several disjointed DLC, and now a novel.

It's pretty fucked up.

i dont give a shit about the politics that created ff15's final product, i'm just thinking about the game as it is on its own, the experience most people get when they happen to pick up ff15, not thinking about whether or not it's a console game

on that basis, it's actually a fun game with some appealing art, story, and not perfect but fine gameplay.

by appealing story, i dont mean its unique or out of this world, but serviceable

It knows them better than you Sponge Bob.

>keep posting FFXV as FFXIV

Naw.

So it's fucking average and not particularly good. That's what serviceable implies when used in a sentence. Glad we cleared that up by your own statements.

Look Jewey Jew, they were both abominations at launch.

Just like you

it's surprisingly enjoyable for how disjointed and fucked up the development was. it's a bit of a mess but the core boy band road trip thing works and hit pretty hard at the end

Is that not why you are here, are you not entertained?

The combat was awful and everything after the boat ride was a rushed mess. But at least it was fresh and new. When do you think FFXVI will come out? 2037?

>be Tabata
>receive project
>fuck story to hell
>push merchandise
>butcher game because i'm too lazy to press buttons
>actively silence any leaks about what the game was before I got hold of it
>promise dlc, bail on project midway through to create my own company

Mediocre game

Not terrible, not amazing

>bail

He was Japanese "fired",

I just want SE to let Nakamura explain Pitioss, I need to know what's going on in there

This really makes me wonder how SE is even able to keep themselves afloat at this point. With how long it took them to even put out FF15, KH3, and now FF7R, it just seems like the company is staffed by retards that would've gone under ages ago.

sure, nothing special but its not bad. i'd recommend it to people who wanna play and its on sale or something.

The LAST final fantasy that was good which isn't saying much was 9, get the fuck off my board.

>Insomnia invasion was cut and made into a movie
>Character content cut from the game and put into an anime
>Character arcs cut from the game and made into paid DLC
>Empire gets off-screened
>No explorable Tenebrae
>No world of ruin
>No post-time skip characters appear like Cidy, Iris, stc
>Main heroine was barely in the game
>Magic system was shit
>Summon system was shit (though it looked cool when it happened)
>Can't die in combat
>Combat was made to be a attack sequence instead of press by press combos like a regular action game
>Story was too fragmented
Nah the game was just that bad.

Its just not worth the time. Yeah sure theres a lot of shit to do. But theres no satisfying conclusion to it all. Also the story is spread across 10 different mediums.

You make it sound like Versus 13 came out. I'm still waiting for that. XV isn't V13

This sounds pretty disappointing I think I'll just call it quits now and play XIII. I was playing XV for the story of the bros but if u have to watch and read a bunch of other shit that's a turn off. I'm interested in XIII do I get the story from the game trilogy? I don't need to watch or read any extra shit right?

FFX was a fucking joke, go HA HA HA HA HA your way to your shit metascore and fucking tranny fanboys.

Because the director and president of SE opted to rebuild FFXIV* from scratch after the first gen colossal fuck up that it was. The game now is extremely good and the engine and toolsets are very mature, that they can keep cranking out content. It's also well optimized, has a good story and has sound decision making backing it. It prints them enough money to justify all their other autismo projects that keep shitting the bed left and right.

The issue is that SE's leadership is also behind the times. They need to do what Battlefield and Doom do with their games. Design them for PC and port them down to consoles, and release them simultaneously across all platforms. Doing this makes it so that you release the best possible experience (graphically, physically, gameplay, and performance wise) for all parties, and nets you the absolute maximum amount of profit consistently over short and long term timescales. As long as they continue to make console games on PCs that takes full advantage of the workstation PCs, but whose features don't exist in consoles, and try to port a magnitude order performance difference down into an envelope where it does not exist, they will continue to flounder.

The original White Engine that debuted FXIII? PC centric, tried to shove into a console, failed and the game underwent a divergent downgrade. Look at all the game DEVELOPMENT videos of FFXV* and you can see the dev team being absolutely enamored by all the cool shit they can do in the engine for the game, and the kind of scale and development they can do with all their features (failing to account for the fact that the game they were showing off was running on seriously beefy rigs that ran circles around consoles). FFXV* under went a scale downgrade, then suffered a graphical downgrade, then suffered a physics downgrade, then suffered a LIGHTING ENGINE downgrade, and it kept on happening until the game looked like a shadow of itself from 1-2 years out from launch; etc.

XIII doesnt have that problem. But its still a shit story imo. Like, very disconnected and makes less sense as you progress. But at the very least its a finished story unlike XV. XIII-2 is great as well.

It's legit great when it's not being a Final Fantasy game. If the story was far more toned down and focused entirely on the "Road trip with the bros" aspect, it would have been legit one of the best JRPGs ever for the creativity alone. Unfortunately Luna, Ardyn and the entire plot had to happen, and they just drag the entire game down

Final Fantasy hasn't been good in 19 years

unless you want to count the online games, then it's still sad

>Completely gutted and downgraded the lighting, the map, the cities
>Cut half the plot to sell it as DLC/Anime/Movies
>Original Kingdom Hearts-like gameplay was bitten snd killed because they were afraid that FF fans were too braindead to play a game that required motor skills

Square Enix should take the concept assets of this: youtube.com/watch?v=EwBuCguF1b4 and as is, build a game around that entire environment for FFXVI for X Series and PS5. Since they've gone down this path of masturbatory contemporary final fantasy with FFXV*.

>they were afraid that FF fans were too braindead to play a game that required motor skills

You mean Tabatha. FF fans had no issues. Tabatha had issues. The entire game play system was completely redone because Tabatha didn't want to press buttons.

It's terrible and worse than everyone remembered.
>the gameplay offers little choice, little challenge, and little ways to break the monotony of a 1 button hack and slash. >'muh story' fags don't even have a leg to stand on because the story was fucked to hell across multiple mediums.
>open world meme is an empty wasteland that serves as a waiting period from setpiece to setpiece.
The worst parts are the game and the best parts have nothing to do with being a game. It is truly a terrible game, but it can keep moviefags entertained.

The only great thing about the game is the chill road trip with the bros vibe and they literally kill that by chapter 2

>Final Fantasy hasn't been good in 19 years
i was about to call you a faggot, but this is probably true. holy crap, FF hasn't been good in 20 fucking years.

The game was pretty bad. The combat is insanely monotonous and shallow, the quests are standard JRPG fare, the story is unfinished and barely there.

It's still universes ahead of II and XIII at least.

>The entire second half happens in a train because they were too lazy to finish the second map
It'legit shocking that they shipped the game in the state it is

I think it was around that time -6-8 months that investors started asking very pointed questions to the leadership of Square Enix on what the fuck was actually going on with their magnanimous FFXV* title. Upper management likely got really scared about investors bringing a suit that would dig deep into the gross mismanagement that was the project, and forced the team to bundle it asap and ship.

Only competition is constantly hamstrung by their superiors while the west has fucking Bethesda and Obsidian huffing paint on a quest to be the dumbest studio, with Bioware OD'd in a corner with flies crawling over it.

A combination of both.

10 years for a story to be gutted into DLC and one button combat because the director wanted to pander to casuals

>giving your protagonists the style of faggots from high school about 10 years too late to actually hit the trend
>put them in a fantasy/regular/sci fi world

God final fantasy is the fucking worst.

Issue is neither with design nor setting. It's just cancerous management and implementation of the entire stack. Japanese corporate hierarchy prevents junior engineers from pointing out failures to higher engineers, so small problems can get massive and the team often has no choice but to go along. It's emblematic of all of SE's failures over the last decade and half.

>Issue is neither with design nor setting.
It is with me nigga i dont like running around as an emo fruitcake. Shit, the banter and dynamic of the group itself was fine but they all look fucking retarded. The whole world is retarded.

Is it still a problem if it was suits vs cloaks ala Nomura's vision?

One of the most mediocre games i have ever played, i couldn't even beat it, it just wasn't fun.

I got it for free, and i still was dissapointed

It was pretty good, but I played the PC release that wasn't missing all kinds of shit. I didn't like how you had to watch a movie and an anime to get the full story, and the post timeskip part of the game is way worse than the first part, but it was pretty good.

Better than 12 and 13, which is as much as I can reasonable expect from nuSquare. Salty 12 contrarians can cry all they want about that statement, but it's reality. Nowhere near 6, 7, 8, or 9. Pre 6 games are up to taste; I only really thought 5 was great and I played them all at the time they released.

It's bad
