I don't play many JRPGs. Persona 5 and Octopath Traveler are the first ones where I just couldn't stand the dialogue. Like, I found it physically repulsive that someone wrote lines that insincere and artless.

The only people who hate Persona 5 are people who unironically hate story in videogames. And that's fine, but don't pretend the game isn't good. It's fun as hell, the gameplay is fun, and the story is entertaining. If you don't like Persona 5, you probably just don't like videogames, so go watch Westworld or play Monopoly or something.

Depressed, anti-social people get to have a high school experience of their dreams. It's actually a phenomenal premise, and it actually helped many people with their confidence.

Persona 5 is definitely by far the worst one, though. And I really can't imagine anyone older than 14 being able to enjoy its writing so the whole critical acclaim thing confuses me greatly.

Never, because it isn't. First palace arc is good, second is already a downfall from the previous, but at least its fun, third sucks hard just like Makoto does, fourth is great with the Futaba arc, but after it, we have THE WORST segment in the history of the franchise with the stupid hawaii trip, the Phantom Thieves circlejerk and the Morgana and Ryuji feud. Fifth dungeon was boring, sixth dungeon was okay, twist was kinda cool, seventh dungeon was shit, Shido boss battle was cool, the velvet room twist was shit, the ending was a worsened P4 ending rip off and it was bad.
Ost is great, art is great.
Gameplay could have been better if the game was actually difficult.
IT HAS THE WORST CONFIDANTS IN THE ENTIRE SERIES.
It also has the worst cast of characters, since they barely develop because the game is too busy wanking to the Phantom Thieves to care about making compelling characters.
Honestly, 5/10 is what Persona 5 deserves, but I would give it 6/10 because of the music and the art. It is the second worst game in the franchise, only losing to the original Persona.

The whole game lacks consequence. Nobody in the PT really develops beyond their own character arcs or recruitment phase, which only serves to move the plot forward. The PT has 0 chemistry as well. P3 had somewhat of the same issue but came together due to circumstances that had actual impact and focus. The main twist of the game is that you were a pawn the whole time for two metaphysical beings who wanted to fuck with Japan for some reason. That's it. For a game that talks about it's focus being about Rebellion, you don't do a lot of it. Sure, the PT get arrogant about their super stardom which becomes a plot device, but at that point I was so disillusioned by what they were actually doing. There was like, maybe some parts in the beginning where they questioned if what they were doing was actually right, but then the middle of the game is a practical wankfest and then the conclusion made of it is essentially going back to brainwashing people for the greater good/shitty adults which basically shows they learned nothing. I have to tell myself replaying the game if this was truly intentional by the writers to make the main characters willfully ignorant but it literally just never goes there. You save the day with the power of friendship and shoot god in the head.

Go for it. I like them all, but I done necessarily see 5 being lower quality than the others

Good for you bro, even if you did play P5 then Royal is fresh enough to make a second playthrough fun, having tons of fun with it again, it is without a doubt one of the best JRPGs out there and no amount of seething from others is going to change that.

Dragon Quest 11 was the only other good JRPG this gen. We had two.

I like the art style and dungeon crawling well enough but a lot of the dialogue is cringe and the story drops off after the first arc. Some of the OST is decent as well. If only we got the game play/presentation of P5 with the story/dialogue of P2.

It might not be so bad if the game figured out how to introduce the party members after Yusuke more organically (which is ironic since Yusuke basically just throws himself at the party but you also get the Mementos stinger about Madarame as foreshadowing).

I like it but I feel like a lot of it starts to blend together into the same type of song. I feel the same way about a lot of the songs used in P5 Royal and P5 Scramble and P5 Dance.
It's not really an issue exclusive to P5, P4 had much of a similar issue with many of the tracks kind of blending together aesthetically.

The best it's ever been.
It's a decent enough, a good 7/10 JRPG. I only ever really think about it anymore when someone mentions it to me, so I can't really say it's left a lasting impact on me.
I've tried replaying it but Kaneshiro's arc just bores the hell out of me and I know nothing after it is really that exciting or fun. I usually just end up starting up a TWEWY run after dropping it after the game starts focusing on Makoto

P5 is pretty good and I'm happy Atlus is getting a lot more attention and hopefully it acts as a gateway to the rest of the SMT series.
But as far as JRPGs with highly stylized graphics and settings centered around psychic teenagers going around Shibuya to solve people's personal problems with their psychic powers by fighting manifestations of their inner negative feelings, TWEWY is by far the stand out in that niche category.
