I've seen this take over and over again and it's kinda true.
I don't think anyone can truly disprove this.
People just come up with shit they don't understand, like a fondly remembered game having mostly ambient tracks, not understanding that those ambient tracks made the game better and they were made with great effort, or "controversial" titles with "controversial" music such as Drakengard, not understanding that it's unique approach to it's music helped the game immensely, even if it drove some people away, when you become more experimental it's normal to polarize people's opinion towards your work.
All in all i'd say this is pretty true.
