in practice only boomer shooters have use the z axis more than doom

2.5D

Yes it's 3D, you can move in three different axis and enemies can also exist in three different axis.

That's when you can move the camera around 3 dimensionally, but gameplay and movement is restricted to 2 axis.

>but gameplay and movement is restricted to 2 axis.
no it isn't.

actually its wrong, you cant dodge projectiles by moving in z axis, all objects have infinite height
hexen was first fully 3d shooter

it only had infinite height because of performance at the time

2D but establishes design concepts that are used in 3D games

>"Raycasting"

It’s fake 3D, it doesn’t even have a Z-axis, the entire horizon just moves with you

>can aim up and down
>can jump
>floors are directly over the top of others
Yes

>it doesn’t even have a Z-axis
The environment is 3D, Demons are infinitely tall to save memory, not because there's no Z-Axis.

No. It's when you have a 3D game world but make extensive or total use of 2D for items and characters.

You dumb m8? Projectiles aren’t infinitely tall. Besides rocket blast

You can, have you actually played the game?

No.

One height tall Wolfys absolutely SEETHING that their "3D" game got blown the fuck out.

>gameplay in an otherwise three-dimensional video game that is restricted to a two-dimensional plane with a limited access to the third dimension.

I recently started playing odamex for the coop but played quite a bit of doom 1 and 2 singleplayer and the port seems pretty faithful to the original and I want to play other id tech games but it doesnt support hexen
what port should I use to play hexen? I just want widescreen support no fancy

Fucking retards parroting the fake 3D notion.
Guess what, all games are more or less faked to look the way they do.
Those pretty lights on screen? Projected onto the screen using a single quad on screen.
That depth of field? Just a blur using the z-buffer.
What about the PS1? It had no z-buffer nor proper texture mapping, but it's universally regarded as being 3D.

Doom is by all practical means 3D. Projectiles have directionality in all dimensions, and their collisions are properly calculated as expected.

Calm your tits. You cant aim up and down and floors cant be put on top of one another, its not true 3D. That doesn't make it bad but you need to face facts

>You can't aim up and down
You can't do so manually, but the engine is capable of handling it with some distortion. Hexen and Duke 3D demonstrates this in action, including vertical player collision checks.

>I'VE NEVER PLAYED DOOM BUT I HAVE OPINIONS AND KNOW FACTS

I realize that Duke 3D is a different engine, but it's the same principle of "faking" the third dimension using sectors.

>Projected onto the screen using a single quad on screen.
I wish I had any idea what you are talking about. Like, I know what the words mean individually, but when you put them together to form this sentence, it makes no sense. It could be some meaningless technobabble from a bad sci-fi novel, and I wouldn't have a clue.

Did Yas Forums finally realize Doom has been always shit. I'm so happy.

You can, you fucking retard. Height affects projectiles.

>doesn't have a Z axis
>can go upstairs
>can go downstairs
It DOES have a Z axis, it just doesn't allow you to aim freely on it.

Quad referring to a pair of triangles that form a rectangle, projected onto the screen by reading the z-buffer. You may have heard of deferred shading, which lits up the scene entirely using 2D images containing information about the player's view.
It's often more sophisticated than that, but ambient occlusion and reflections work this way.

The lack of "real" 3D only helps the game.

Many modern games are as 3D as this game.
Mostly sony the games and similars.

X axis left/right
Y axis forward/backward
Z up/down

Looks like three axis directions to me.
This webm also proves DOOM was meant to play with mouse for aiming.

Attached: DOOM2 3D.webm (980x516, 2.93M)

Holy shit you are bad at video games.

Try aiming with a mouse that has 100x higher DPI than the game was made for.

Another 3 axis webm.

Attached: 3d.webm (720x528, 1.99M)

nah that's another definition of the term and it's pretty dumb. crash bandicoot is full 3d. doom is 2.5d. it's technical and has nothing to do with gameplay

Another, this one debunking "infinite height" enemies.

Attached: 3d 2.webm (720x538, 1.99M)

Great Doom clone.

you're a fucking retard, have you even played doom?

Height affects pickups and projectiles.

boomers BTFOd

t. retard that didn't understand what he posted

>playing on a sourceport that fixes infinte height enemies
>LOOK GUYS IT'S NOT TRUE!!!!

>doesn't post proof
>he just shitposts
good job retard

>NO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE SAME WAY THEY DID IN 93 EVEN THOUGHT THEY DID EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO LET YOU DO ANYTHING WITH THE GAME

go play the original and see for yourself zoomer, sourceports are obviously not the official versions

Grow a brain, retard.

not an argument

DOOM isn't even 2.5D. Marathon is, since it allows Y axis shooting and mechanics.
Overall, Marathon is just better, and people call it a "Doom clone".

You haven't made a single argument either. Grow a brain.

stop getting so buttblasted because it's been revealed that you've never played the original DOS versions, zoomer

I guess RE4 is a 2D game because it doesn't have jumping.

>been revealed
I am on no one's side you fucking retard. but he posted proof, you just keep shitposting.

burden of proof is on him, infinite height enemies is common knowledge among non retards

>boomer hipster thinks anyone will ever care about his "alternative" videogames

Attached: file.png (480x360, 241.9K)

Looks kinda cool but how does he shoot so many bullets without a chainsaw cutscene? Seems kinda unrealistic imo.

Doom by definition is a 2D game because the maps are designed and created in 2 dimensions. The rendering system by Carmack uses binary space partitions to create a 3D perspective.

Doom's ENVIRONMENT RENDERING is 2D, not all the gameplay, make the difference you dumb nigger

>he still doesn't post proof
God job retard, keep attention whoring then.

even if it was more technically impressive, it doesnt look fun at all

keep giving me (You)'s to try covering your ass, please
