In the original game he's great. They build up this ominous monster that can control people's cells and will devour the whole planet, but at the same time he's avoiding a direct confrontation with Cloud. Cloud was able to defeat him even as a failure and when they finally do fight for real he demolishes him, it's very thematically appropriate he tries to psych you out all game when you're always playing as the one person he has to be concerned about.

Regardless, there are many memorable villains that are rapists. A villain need not always be of the sympathetic type, the villain can be a downright bastard of a person and still be well written
A good example of this would be Griffith from Berserk

He's literally half dead frozen in the north crater right until he gets the dark materia. He had no impact until that moment. Jenova was trying to "revive" sepiroth the whole game.

Post AC sephiroth goes back in time but can't change history because of time ghosts, so he tricks cloud into doing it.
the entire plot of remake is that sephiroth is "remaking" the game to suit his design by way of time travel.
by the end he hijacks the plot at prettymuch the same point he hijacked it in the original game, except he escalated the fuck out of everything because he can now change history and remembers everything that happened.
Also doing this fucked time in the ass so hard that zack's death never happened.
Sephiroth's basically doing a more terrifying version of what he did in the original game, manipulating events with a body proxy. Except instead of manipulating cloud into helping him find the black materia, he already appears to have it.
So it's a new version of essentially the same story, expect there to be an army of giant snakes impaled on trees instead of just the one.

He is but the game the story portrays him is god tier, seeing the impaled giant snake contributed more to making him memorable than his retarded motivations or the Jenova bullshit.

That is why the original body takes Sephiroth form, as do all beings with Jenova cells become Sephiroth Clones, he is acting as the brain for an enormous organism. Cloud here's Sephiroth talking in his head before going to the Shinra building, and Jenova "wakes up" when Cloud gets near it, it's because Sephiroth is inside his cells and it jumps into the headless vessel.

Judging from the way he's moving, it's probably a hallucination.

Sephiroth was a god tier villain in his first appearance but all subsequent appearances have completely lost sight of the appeal of the character, so he only appears shit tier now.

FF7 was never about Sephiroth himself but Sephiroth inside Cloud's mind, his own personal tormentor and demon. In the end he's just a result of Shinra's incompetence and greediness.

When he fell into the life stream he was able to learn the history of the planet and what he and Jenova really are.

it's a cool idea, but man oh man did they pick the wrong game to do that with.
I mean, they could've just said it was FFVII-2 Remake and maybe gotten away with it, because the 2 would've implied that it was describing an event, instead of the game itself.

I did replay the game, like a month ago. What I'm saying IS Hojo's bullshit. Hojo is the one who realizes that the reunion is all the beings with Jenova cells going to Sephiroth instead of Jenova in Midgard.

No hojo actually confirms it in-game when he points out that all the remnants, including sephiroth, go to north crater, where sephiroth's true body is located.
He was remote controlling jenova's body the entire time.
Jenova was never in control, it was always sephiroth.
it's more ambiguous in the japanese version though, especially when sephiroth switches pronouns after nibelheim, further implying it's jenova, but hojo's explanation lines up with the notion that sephiroth was controlling everything.

He'd be great if they made him more like Sil in the movie 'Species'--a level of agency, but also hopelessly dominated by a primal, animalistic instinct to destroy humanity and conquer that planet because of his Jenova DNA. It could make for a really interested, complicated character, but they turned him into a faggot.

That's exactly how he is in the original game though.

Yes, but over the years, they've given him more and more agency and downplayed any influence that Jenova's DNA has over him. I'm not saying I want him to be a mindless puppet, but I hat that he's just become an angry, cardboard psychopath who doesn't even have to wrestle with his human side. He found out he was half-Martian and immediately said "fuck Earth". It's not compelling.

He's better than someone like Ridley or Ganondorf

Half and half? Maybe? Sephiroth's terminal goal was to absorb all of Gaia's Lifestream, the same goal Jenova had. Granted the circumstances around the two are different. Jenova was a parasite that wanted to feed, Sephiroth deluded himself into believing that he owned the planet and that he was a god entitled to the planet's Mako supply (sounds a hell of a lot like Shinra actually). But at the end of the day they both want the same thing, it's unclear who influences who more because both Jenova and Sephiroth reinforce each other.

He's far from the best but far from the worst. Sephy is a 5/10, he has a stable enough character, but he doesn't do anything different. Just a usual, "I will destroy this world, and become the new god!" villain.
In a series with Jecht, Vayne Solidor, Caius Ballad, and now Emet-Selch, he's really lost his luster over the years.

I know there's a lot of conjecture surrounding FF7 due to the translation but I always liked the idea of him being this science experiment super soldier who finds out his life is a lie and ends up going insane because of it. I also do like the idea that Sephiroth died before the start of the game and the sephiroth we see is a clone / corpse puppet for jenova.

Most zoomers don't even know he's part alien though. Jenova has become a footnote, when it's what sets the story apart from the standard bad guy/good guy villain/hero story. As a bunch of random fans why Sephiroth is the way he is, and many will just say "because he's evil, duh"

The game treats them as one character. Sephiroth was born made of Jenova cells, and we never meet the original Jenova, it's motive for eating the planet was likely because it believed itself to be a godlike being hence the name. It's less there plans overlap that they're the same plan

The TL;DR version is basically: his people were almost entirely wiped out in a calamity. His aim to revive them, and he's been shouldering this burden for thousands of years. However, to revive them he needs to genocide entire worlds. Given his people are objectively superior, he sees killing these worlds as like swotting flies for normies.

It doesn't even know what a Lifestream is, it just attacks any non-Jenova lifeforms it sees.
The Lifestream assimilation plot is Sephiroth's alone.
If Jenova had any conception of a Lifestream, why didn't it absorb it the moment it touched down in the north, where it made a crater where the Lifestream gathered, EXACTLY what Sephiroth needed Meteor for?
The only reason Sephiroth needs Meteor now is because the Northern Crater is too healed up after 2000 years to eat it all.

It's stupid that Jenova cells have all of these manipulative properties EXCEPT to influence people to do anything that could benefit Jenova as an organism meant to conquer. The way they treat it, Jenova cells could just as easily be a radioactive spider bite, or "dark mako", or any other bullshit "bad" modification that Hojo makes. The fact that it comes from an ancient parasitic organism is treated as irrelevant to the story--just a piece of lore that doesn't affect anything. That's why I say it's not as compelling as it could be.
