What is it with teenagers and """RNG"""? Is it a streamer thing?
Firstly, arr-enn-gee is such a gay way to stay that. It's "Randomness" or "Luck", not a three letter initialism for a three-word phrase.
Secondly, nearly every single game in existence functions off of randomness. You know why? Because playing the exact same game over and over again is boring as fuck, you dumb faggot.
Thirdly, the idea of even caring about success or randomness in A ROGUELITE is completely retarded. Journey, not the destination, zoomer. You're probably the same faggot that says HURRRRR WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST FLY THE EAGLES TO MORDOR AHURHURHURHUR

stick to fortnite kiddo

Just a heads-up, it's possible to have a 100% winrate on easy mode (what you're failing at right now).

RNG is shorter than both randomness and luck

Slay the Spire thread? Alright!
I’m just trying out the watcher for the first time, and I feel like a kid playing with a bazooka. There’s a fair chance I’ll blow myself up, but until then everybody’s getting raped.

Ah, so it's because zoomers only communicate via text with their favourite streamers, then? Because anyone who uses their mouths and tongues rather than their fingers would understand that "arr enn gee" is three syllables.

>when you draft 5 bludgeons and die to birds in act 2

This is how language works, retard. I get that your midwit brain can't comprehend anything novel and you had the idea that it works otherwise pounded into your head by your 8th grade english teacher, but they lied to you to justify their job. Maybe it's time you grow the fuck up.

i'm not mouthing out my words while I type like a dumbass

It's all those simple video essays people make on YouTube most likely. It's why anytime anything gets nerfed anywhere, you hear "why didn't you just buff everyone else instead of resorting to nerfs", because that's the popular video essayist opinion from what I can tell. RNG is just one of those things that gets a bad rap for no real reason, because people with game design degrees say so. Also this is just a bait OP to get bumps for a STS thread I'm pretty sure, so don't get all heated now.

Yeah, I think you're right. Just look at this kid: His mind is so melted by regurgitating opinions from YouTube that he can't do anything but panic when confronted with his personal shortcomings. Many such cases!

Don’t act like referring to it as RNG is some new phenomenon. I remember kids cursing RNGesus when I was in high school, and I graduated 12 years ago.

She's really strong early game but she doesn't scale well if you aren't careful.

>It's why anytime anything gets nerfed anywhere, you hear "why didn't you just buff everyone else instead of resorting to nerfs", because that's the popular video essayist opinion from what I can tell
this is an finance problem, not a design problem

it takes much longer and therefore more money to pay a balance team to buff say 9 things out of 10 instead of just nerfing 1 thing out of 10

>"I kinda like this deck, it's got a fun synergy going"
>Literally any hard hallway fight from act 2
Fuck me man, act 2 is an ultra filter, especially on high ascensions.

>I remember kids cursing RNGesus when I was in high school, and I graduated 12 years ago.
100000% a lie. You picked it up from AGDQ 2018.

urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=RNG

try a decade before that

>I remember kids cursing RNGesus when I was in high school
KYM records its first use on the Internet in 2014, so you're probably misremembering.

Did you have a snecko eye? Because otherwise, why the fuck would you want 5 bludgeons?

2009*

Yes, people have been using random number generation for many decades. Have you ever heard of dice? I'm referring to the recent faggoty use of the term RNG on its own.

"RNG" predates streaming and is moreso MMO jargon.

>zoomers seething

.....???

urbandictionary is strcitly referring to the term RNG, which was put in urbandictionary in 2008, more than a decade ago

Specifically RNGesus or bemoaning RNG in video games in general? Because I could believe I’m a year off on the former, but I’m positive people complained about RNG in games while I was in HS and that was pre-2009.
Either way, that user is clearly wrong about it being a zoomer phrase.

I wouldn't call that financial, there's plenty of cases where buffing a game around a strong character or strategy just isn't the right solution. Rebalancing an entire game because a strategy or character was unintentionally too powerful is just dumb, and can create a big power creep. Nerfing things into the ground is always shit though, devs who do that are just incompetent, but theres plenty of justified nerfs in games. Rebalancing entire games is not an answer sometimes.

I never would’ve thought Silent would be my best character, but here we are. Just get a bunch of DEX, poison, and block and the rest is history. EZPZ
Defect is similarly braindead with frost and focus, but it feels less consistent. You might never find what you need.

how do i use the mods in the workshop? i subscribed to all the base stuff like modthespire and base whatever and like 1 character mod but when click play there is no changes.

As someone who plays the defect mostly, I feel like by the time I get to Act 2, I've got the game halfway in the bag. It's getting forced into a hard elite in the first act that's the bane of my runs, mostly because of the Gremlin Nob rather than the other two though.

I don't like that entire builds just have no way of winning in the later acts though. It is nearly impossible to go with a shiv build in anything above A10 if you're going for a heart kill

It's really not a card game

You can't force the shivs, you need to wait for the good shit, then you can grab cloak and daggers and shit. Stuff like after image and wraith form, kunai and fan, etc. Dead branch is a free win with shivs. You need to be able to get value out of your shivs past doing 4 damage each.

Act 1 elites on A18 and up just feel unreasonably difficult to me, Nob especially. You just need to hit the ground running and shit out so much damage immediately.

I’ve beaten the A20 heart with shivs, it’s just far, far less consistent than your average poison build. You need to get really lucky with your relics, too.

>itt: a supposed "adult" is surprised a card game is random

the term RNG has most likely existed longer than the age you pretend to be.

I don't understand most characters. With The Watcher I can destroy the game easily using a Stance based build, but I suck dick at using Ironclad because all his shit costs too much to use properly. Is he really reliant on relics?

He's the easiest to build with strength cards, especially after getting limit break+ headbutt.

I think it's partially an issue with how I play the Defect compared to the others. I tend to prioritize card removal early on to make a tight, consistent deck, which means I'm really weak until the first spire boss. The Ironclad especially doesn't have that issue since he's got a lot of powerful, low synergy cards to work with, just grabbing a few nice things is enough to secure your late game, whereas the defect can wind up hamstrung by "bad" cards taking up draws with how often a Defect is likely cycling through his deck for good stuff.

That's because most of v picks their games entirely based on what this board of contrarians think.

I feel you. You need those early frontloaded damage cards on all 4 characters, but ironclad and watcher don’t generally mind having them lategame as much as silent and defect.

I haven't been able to defeat The Heart with anyone except the Ironclad. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I usually take lots of damage in the shield & spear fight too.

2014 is 6 years ago, he's at least 22

Fuck off.

>2 sharp increases are when programming became more accessible and when YT video essayists couldn't shut the fuck up about it

The heart is tough. Spear/shield, too.
The heart ramps up its damage pretty quickly. Every 3 turns it buffs its strength, making the multi attack deadly. If you can’t kill it relatively quickly, it’ll kill you. That’s assuming you even survive his first two attacks after he hits you with all those debuffs.
I don’t know what you’re doing wrong either, but watching someone else do some successful runs could help.

This only goes until 2008, were Youtube essayists a thing back then? (yup I'm a zoomer)
The only sharp increases that I see are somewhere in 1980s (which is plausible for the programming hypothesis, I'll give you that) and an ongoing one since 2001 or so

Also those stats are from books

around 2012 is where there was heavy, heavy game design talk on blogs, conferences, and video. 2008 is when terms like "game feel" were born. 2004 is when people tried to formalize the game design process a bit more with the release of The Theory of Fun by Ralph Kostner.

I usually beat heart with silent, she is very power hungry and always wants the poison engine in her deck since it's her best scaling damage by far, a common mistake I was doing at first was going full in with discard/shiv/grand finale as soon as I got some good stuff for them, but poison is just too good to pass up.

is joke

Is this a veiled slay the spire appreciation thread?

How many times do we have to tell you, the Intents system reduces that RNG by 75%.

>Get dealt bullshit
>Lose
>"Oh, it was just a bad run. I'll try again, the next run will be better"
The same mentality you see in the 60 year olds who play slot machines for hours on end. "The next game's the one", over and over, and you get to look at the pretty lights and pretend like your extremely basic non-decisions matter. Fuck Binding of Isaac for popularizing this bullshit "genre".

That said, Slay the Spire isn't as bad as most roguelikes with the randomness. The worst one I've probably ever played was FTL. That piece of shit game is actually 100% based on luck, and nothing anyone says will convince me otherwise.

The Urban Dictionary entry for "RNGesus", which refers to a fictional god of "RNG", dates back to 2014. Next you'll try to tell us about how that's a programming term too.

They claim that there are people who can effortlessly get up to like ascension 19 without losing any runs. I'm not quite sure at the complete validity of that, but I will believe them when they say there's ways to temper the RNG in the game. IE, hope for the best, plan for the worst, same way you do an Ironman XCOM run.

Does card games without RNG even exist?

Canasta.
