There's a lot of idiots who work in San Fransisco or Sacramento but live in Fresno or other cities even farther away. And they don't drive once a week, they drive that commute every day. There's also people outside of LA and San Diego who do a similar thing. Though with LA traffic, just living in Irvine or Pasadena would be a 2-3 hour commute.
These people live so far away because it's the only place to find cheap housing. And put heavy quotes on "cheap" because even housing in a shit town in California is more expensive than neighboring states. California is so fucked, that's why millions of people are leaving the state.

Yeah California is getting worse and worse. I live in san jose and work in SF. I use caltrain and bart. I actually hate driving from san jose to my work in SF more than my drive to LA because atleast when I am traveling to LA, I leave at 5am so I avoid most traffic.
