To be fair it's not like Barret much cared that they might kill tons of civilians. Also Tifa uses Cloud as an enforcer in her protection money racket. Or did you buy that 'water filters' bullshit?
Time ghosts will try to kill her as Sephiroth did in the original, but the party will have a chance to prevent it and start to break away from the ghosts' "desired" timeline.
Bonus points if there's actually two totally different paths after that point. One where she lives and the ghosts begin to distort the game's timeline and a second where she dies and the game plays out like FF7 originally did.
Reminder that you kill the time ghosts at the end of Midgar, so none of the rest of the game will needs to happen remotely the way it did in the original. That's why Sephiroth is fucking around with you, so you'll kill the plotline where he inevitably loses and give him a real chance of winning.

Cloud and co will prevent Aerith from dying but they will eventually realize that her death is a fixed point in time. The remake is going to give us an entirely new death scene for Aerith where she makes a dramatic sacrifice complete with some sappy Jap song in the background.

I liked the fight scene but they were marred by SE's typical inability to add weight to the blows
I've also read that they kill wedge because he survives past the plate falling and theres a webm of them hovering around jessie as she throws a grenade at the helicopter, and they apparently cause her grenade to miss so she dies
Since they appear before zack they probably tried to kill him. I don't know how biggs survives without them killing him before the party destroys them

They already destroyed the time ghosts by the end, hence why biggs gets to live. We're almost certainly getting an opportunity to save aerith, since cloud actually gets a vision of her death

The whole themes of "no set future" and "defying fate" are all basically hammered in with zero subtlety. This wouldn't mean much if the three stooges simply wanted to change the story and railroad your decisions.
They're basically opening up FFVII's story to be more choice-driven (old Bioware style) rather than a (mostly) linear story path with no real variation, similar to the OG and Remake part 1. Why they needed timey wimey ghosts to justify the new possibilities for the next few games, I have no fucking clue, but I'm happy that's over, at least.

Nothing is handled with subtlety in this one. The childhod promise with Tifa wasn't exactly a masterclass of writing in the original but in this they flash back to it multiple times, including once not a half hour later, just to hammer it in to your head THIS IS CLOUD'S MOTIVATION IN THIS PART.
