Rate my rig?

Lads, I'm gonna upgrade my PC. I know this list will look retarded as I'm keeping some of the older bits that still work fine. I'd appreciate if you could take a look and let me know if there are any glaringly obvious compatibility issues. Yes this is to do with video games (I intend to play some of them on it)

Man, my previous rig was a HAF-912. Such a good case.

These are the notes from PCpartpicker. I'm hoping it will be OK though

Note:Asus PRIME Z390-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard has an onboard USB 3.0 header, but the Cooler Master HAF 912 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case does not have front panel USB 3.0 ports.
Note:The Cooler Master HAF 912 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case supports video cards up to 390mm long, but video cards over 270mm may block drive bays. Since the Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB Video Card is 298mm long, some drive bays may not be usable. The Cooler Master HAF 912 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case hard drive bays are positioned where some of the bays may be physically blocked when using longer video cards.
Note:The Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the Asus PRIME Z390-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard.
Note:The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled.
Note:Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders.

It's trash.

they still make haf 912s or did you just recycled from previous builds?

>am4 cooler on an intel board

yeah I see no reason to change it as it's a decent size

>>am4 cooler on an intel board
pls enlighten me

am4=amd

- Get 3200MHz CL14 RAM instead
- Drop the 2 TB SSD
- Get a GOOD nvme drive, not some ADATA crap.
- 1070 is a bit weak, get something beefier or downgrade CPU. Consider Ryzen.
- Get a good platinum rated PSU

I didn't know that, thanks. I was just going based off this article premiumbuilds.com/guides/best-cpu-coolers-for-i7-9700k/

it fits LGA sockets

>Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4
No it doesn't. That version only fits AM4 sockets, which is why AM4 is in the fucking name.

Thanks for the tips. The GPU and PSU are from my existing build, as is the HDD. I was gonna install games on the 2TB SSD but I guess if I got a bigger nvme drive I could install them on that. The ADATA thing was just to save a bit of money but my first thought was a Samsung

pls read:
newegg.com/noctua-nh-d15-se-am4/p/13C-0005-00111 vs newegg.com/noctua-nh-d15/p/N82E16835608045

also notice that the amd cooler is a lot more expensive

then pcpartpicker is a fucking liar

Attached: Capture.jpg (504x774, 28.14K)

that's ideal then, I'll just get the one that fits Intel. Thanks dude

the regular one also has am4 brackets and is cheaper.
t. i own one

why the fuck does the cheaper one fit both intel and amd? what kind of fuckery is this?

If they're from any existing build, continue using them by all means. But a 9700k might still be overkill for what you can achieve with a 1070.
As for vidya on SSD vs NVME, it doesn't matter much. Just dump all of your games on the 2TB SSD, as long as it got decent read speeds, you're golden.

Technically you can mount it on those sockets I guess, but you need to purchase the adapter separately. The regular one comes with LGA mounting brackets.

>But a 9700k might still be overkill
you're probably right, it just seemed like really good value to me as the first CPU I looked at was the ryzen 9 3950x and this one is half the price

Ayy.
I also need help.
What do you guys think of a build with a Ryzen 5 3600, Nvidia Rtx 2060, 8gb Ram?
I was interested in this build because I read these particular components work very well together and I would be able to get more out of it instead of buying an Intel i7 6700k and up.

Also, what would you guys tell me about this component compatibility thing? Does it apply only to cheap builds or how exactly does that work?

>buying Intel in current year
Why would you do that to yourself
Get a 3700x and a decent X470 board

You're comparing an 8c/16t to a 16c/32t CPU, makes no sense. One could argue that more cores equals better future proofing, but by the time games use that many cores, much better hardware will be available. I got a 3900x myself because I had some fuck you money to spare, but for vidya only, it means jack shit.

By the way, I would like to play in 4k, so if you have a suggestion for better components for that that are not insanely expensive, feel free to tell me. Thanks.

4K? 2080ti or bust unless you want to play at 10fps.

dont buy a 2060
at least go for a 2060 super if you're not going for radeon on ryzen.
this but a little less ironically.

also you niggers need /g/ and /pcbg/ and they're retards there too
you're comparing the wrong things, a 3950x is a 16 core chip. obviously a 16 core chip costs more than an 8 core chip.
compare 8 core to 8 core perhaps.
hilariously the 8700k outperforms the 9700k in some games because 6core/12thread is better for some than 8core/8thread.
i'd go 8 core 16 thread personally.

3950x isn't really a gaming chip, it's for content creators
AMD may try to argue otherwise, but we all know the truth

I think it's fair, on his part, to be comparing price points since that's what the average consumer does. If someone can get more for less, then they will -- like more cores and threads.

you're right, I just heard that the 3950x was the best cpu ever (which compared to my 4th gen quad core i5 it is) but then looked into it and found that the i7 9700k is very decent for half the cost. obviously the 2 processors are for completely different purposes but that was just my train of thought
I'd recommend 16GB of RAM.

Is that so? I've seen people playing in 4k with less, I think.
But if you're right. What kind of build would you recommend for someone who wants to play last generation games in ultra, with a very good framerate, maybe reaching 2k instead of 4k?

>1070
Lmao, poorfag

If you target 60fps at 2k, a 1080 / 2070 super will do. Anything higher than that and you'll be looking at much more expensive components again.

i got it when they were just released. it was to replace my failing 780 which used to be king. ah those were the days
*crack*
*sip*

the cpu cooler is an AM4 socket version which wont fit your motherboard. a normal nh-d15 or d15s is what you want. personally id go with a d15s and buy an extra nf-a15 fan to attach since the standard nh-d15 has less clearance for a GPU and RAM

I see. What processor would you recommend for a 2070 super? Also, will it run at 60 frames smoothly?

By the way, you mean 1080 super, correct?

If you're really into Intel, 8600 / 9400f, otherwise a 3700x. 6 cores are the minimum you should strive for.

Hey I have that case.

No such thing as a 1080 super, the Super iterations got introduced with the 20xx series.

Oh, ok.
So would those processors be fine for a 1080ti? Or would an i5 be appropriate?

I mean, it really depends. If you target last generation games, most won't take advantage of that many cores. Thing is, the higher of a resolution you target the "weaker" your CPU may be in terms of performance to keep up.
If you can get a cheap 1080ti, those CPUs should still work fine if you go for 2k@60fps, sure.

Thanks, user.
Which card do you like better, the 2070 super or the 1080ti. I ask because I've seen people who like the 1080ti a whole lot more than some of the new ones.

Thing is, RTX is pretty worthless even on the most high end cards as of now, so if you can get a 2070 super for cheaper than a 1080ti but don't care for RTX, just go for it. The 1080ti has a proven track record whereas quite a few high end RTX cards died rather quickly at launch, though those flaws should be fixed by now. Keep in mind 10xx series is almost 4 years old while 20xx is about 2 years old as well.

he CAN get more for less
just looking at the wrong thing
3600 exists

>non-hyperthreaded cpu in 2020
Enjoy the crippling stuttering and 1% lows within a year of purchase.

Now is the worst time to buy a new GPU. Ampere has to be out by the end of this year since Turing is two years old at this point. Next gen consoles are gonna be around a 2070 super.

that's interesting, people have been saying this CPU is overkill. what do you recommend?

most games if not all dont even use hyper threading

I have the same case.
I had to mount my cooling fans to the top of it.

Aesthetics are for fags.

>upgrading your pc with next gen consoles right around the corner
Enjoy being outdated in a fucking year.

Attached: Gasoline.jpg (680x339, 34.55K)

Enjoy your console user. Meanwhile, I will enjoy my 3900x, 2080ti and 1440p, 144hz Ultrawide.

that's not how it works

Don't kid yourself, your rig will already be outdated when the Sex comes out.

>1070
why

It already is outdated, duh. Doesn't mean I don't get to enjoy it.

Oh, at the 1440p 144z Ultrawide that you claimed?

Attached: 558JEWM.png (1416x1600, 605.87K)

kept it from my old build. basically i had a decent PC until my gtx 780 died aroud the time the 1070 was released. So it was a really great card for the time (and is still good enough now for me to not want to spend £600 on the next one)

That build will be outdated? How much is that console going to cost? 2000+?

What?

The Sex is gonna be the biggest bang for your buck. Mop the fucking floor with PCs, likely $400.

you're probably too young to remember last gen consoles coming out, but to give you an idea the Xbox One X isn't as good as they said the original Xbox One would be in 2013. So don't get too excited

So a better graphics card than a 2080ti and a processor that handles it smoothly for 400 dollars...

Mmmmmmmmmmm.

I hope next gen consoles will be fucking beasts, at least console ports to PC won't be dumbed down as fuck anymore.

>Xbox will mop the floor with PCs
the mind of a console shitter

I have a 9700K but I went with an RTX 2080. It's perfect. Don't bother with 2080ti it's a rip off and is bottle necked by 90% of CPUs anyway. The standard 2080 will play everything on max 60fps 4K

Attached: cosyfeels.png (377x326, 8.71K)

That's not how bottlenecks work, especially at 4k, my comfy user.

What should I get for VR, especially Half-Life Alyx?
/g/ told me pic was shit and I should go with
>Ryzen 5 3600 + B450 tomahawk max + 2 x 8gb 3200 ram + RTX 2060 Super + MX500 500gb + RM650x + P400A

I don't care about running games at 4K on Ultra or anything ridiculous, I'm content with medium to high as long as I get a good frame rate. I CAN spend a lot but I'd rather spend as little as I need.

Yes, you clearly aren't up to date. Step out of your PC bubble.
