Never played any persona games, been years ( more than a decade, probably even more than that) since i played any jrpg, played most of them when i was very young during the ps1 and early ps2 days
However i feel in the mood for some slice of life. Im not a weeb but i have played lots of japanese games of all kinds.
So, if this game is that good to have such high scores will i like it if im into an inmersive rpg? Is it really that good? Are the characters likeable and memorable?

Ever play Pokémon? The gameplay is basically Pokémon with dungeon crawling. Imo I think the characters are really fun and you can really connect with them. And it’s easy for newcomers to get into it. I recommend it.

The animation is awful, the story and pacing are terrible, and yes - obviously it'll spoil everything.
It's nothing like the P4 anime, that was very self-aware and practically chose all the most smug and humorous options by default.
Play the game.

I would suggest you do some research on Persona 3, 4 and 5 and see which one you're more interested in.
3: Focuses on themes of death and accepting them. The game has an incredible story, but suffers from some gameplay (you can't control party members) and pacing issues (The dungeon combat takes place in is a grind and for a large portion of the story nothing happens). That said if you can make it through you'll be rewarded by excellent character development and a fantastic ending.
4: is more colorful and exciting but it still grapples with some serious themes like media manipulation and mass hysteria. It features small town life as opposed to being in the city and it is probably the comfiest game I've ever played. While the dungeons are still a snooze fest the combat is improved as is the pacing. Full disclosure 4 is my favorite game ever.
5: Has what I felt was the worst writing out of them all but it makes up for it with gorgeous visuals and a perfected combat system. The themes are primarily concerned with Justice and how power structures work.
I'd recommend all 3 but you should do some research they may not be your thing.
