All the upgrades you obtain are integrated into the gameplay, instead of having to constantly switch between transformations, and all of the upgrades you get enhance the gameplay enormously.

Pirate Shantae is also a huge cutie and her shenanigans with Risky through the whole game are also charming.

HGH isn't bad, the problem is that Pirate's Curse set the bar really, really high with a ton of movement options and excellent platforming

HGH meanwhile doesn't have any Risky Tools like her cannon jumps or scimitar dash so it feels comparatively very slow, platforming relies more on her normal jumps and monkey dash instead of the way-more-fun movement she had before.

the transformations are far too numerous and clunky to use. Crab transformation is useless once you've found the underwater collectibles, most of the side dances are kinda whatever, with the funniest one being the most useless (blobfish). Also, Tree transformation makes you invincible whenever you want which feels like an oversight rather than a feature.

The DLC of HGH is actually good, the problem is it's easy to burn out because you are essentially running through the same five or six stages remixed over and over in each mode. That said, Mighty Switch mode is legit, and Friends Til The End explains what happened to Nega-Shantae, so those I would definitely recommend running through along with Risky Mode.

I mean, it was funded, and we got the Nega-Shantae chapter that was originally an unmet stretch goal, so I'd say it was completely fine whether MN9 failed or not.

MN9 was a whole other can of worms because before the game was even finalized they were already discussing a MML successor kickstarter and another kickstarter for the anime of said MML successor AND they had a TV show lined up AND he wanted to make a MN9 movie.
