The support for Geno is an odd relic from a different time.
Although it only really took off in the Brawl days, requests for Geno took root back in the Melee pre-release.
And if you think about it, it wasn't that weird at the time. Mario RPG had come out only 5 years prior, the idea that Geno was just a one-off character, or that it was technically a third party character, hadn't really set in. There was seemingly nothing weird about a popular Mario character getting in.
But from then on, instead of dying out like the character did, supporters just kept the whole thing snowballing into a massive meme.
Basically, Geno is just another example of Melee players being incapable of letting go.
