Lmao, Arena Shooters aren't popular because they never progressed, the genre has been at either a decline or a stand still for over a decade. Every time a new arena shooter that's made by a big company releases it shits on the genre, and then an indie game comes along and just mimics Quake Live or UT2K4 and no one is interested in those games in reality because they're mechanics aren't something new, or fresh, they're old and stale and add nothing to an already established genre. Everyone likes to claim that the newest indie arena shooter is doing something big or spicing it up, but all that ever happens is they include a small mechanic from another game and then maybe tweak weapon balance, WOAH WOW WHAT A CHANGE, HOW GROUND BREAKING.

You know why CS:GO is popular? Because the fucking game progressed, Valve added content to the fucking game and tightened the mechanics to a point that people universally agreed that the shooting felt great and game flow almost always felt fresh.

Introduce a new movement system, stop relying on what Quake and UT created, people constantly bitch that if you change the movement system you kill the game, but that's not even remotely true. 15 years ago if you told players that auto-hopping was going to be the norm in all arena shooters players would have thrown a fit and would be frothing at the mouth, but low and behold, everyone agrees now after years of having auto-hopping that it was a good fucking idea.

Change the weapon roster, for good, stop leaning on fucking Quake and UT, the weapon roster has been the same for years to facilitate fucking Duel/1v1, and while I love fucking Duel, most people don't, so fuck off and change it.

Focus on making Clan/Team Arena a better experience, introduce more mechanics to the fucking team modes, this is where the expanded weapon roster comes in. 2GD fucking knew that Clan Arena was shit and has been shit for years but people love to play it so he devised the stupid ball abilities and Wipeout to make clan arena better, and it worked, BUT HE DIDN'T GO FUCKING FAR ENOUGH, he like everyone else is designing the genre too fucking safe.

I don’t know. I’m guessing younger people heard about how hardcore they were and now LARP as hardcore AFPS players for some kind of gamer cred. Even in it’s prime you would be lucky to see 1000 players online in Q3A.

Counter-Strike was the natural progression and was WAY more popular even at the time.

Because they have a lot of prestige from the "old days" due to them being the first esports games and old faggots that played rocket arena 3 for 5 mins back in 2000 think that they were as good as quake pros even though they were never good, then zoomers want to impress the boomers so they larp as also being quake pros. Yeah I think a big reason quake died was that all anyone wants to play is gay ass 50v50 clan battles on camp grounds. Normies hate that shit. Even the actual quake dueler fags hate it. You have to have some kind of objective based mode that doesn't suck.

I don't know man, a lot changed from 1.6 to source and from source to GO.

At a surface level it doesn't seem like a whole lot, but if you had been playing those games for years you could fucking tell how the movement system changed, how weapon eco was rebalanced to not be so punishing and how maps were fundamentally changed to facilitate a better new player experience.

I know how this will sound, but I post this without a hint of irony: Try the game Arsenal on Roblox. It's shockingly solid (seriously, I have no idea how they got hitreg to work so well in fucking roblox of all things) and is the only arena shooter I've ever played that has consistently had a large playerbase for multiple years. It is by far the most well hidden gem of a game I've ever seen.

I wish I could go back to the glory days of UT 2k4's assault multiplayer. The races and the usual assault fare. Not even bothered about the standard death match and classic arena modes, I always felt Quake 3 was a better game for that.
But I'll always miss those days playing assault.

yeah, 2k4 had the shield gun and rockets and link gun weren't as usable as RL and LG in quake. Shock rifle and flak cannon were more functional.

Yeah, Wipeout is neat, it's still not good enough. It's still too safely designed, Diabotical as a whole is too safely designed to please a crowd that barely exists anymore. Conservatively designing a quake clone will never result in a smash hit, if Diabotical fails it'll be the ultimate proof that the formula CAN NOT WORK under its current configuration and needs more radical changes.

Tribes is fun, but autismos don't consider it an Arena Shooter. I would literally give my left nutt for tribes to be made again today, it has everything a shooter needs to succeed, its formula is solid as fuck.
