Nu gordon is shit and anyone who thinks Gorden is supposed to be some weak looking beta nerd has never played Half Life 1. In the original game, it is made clear Gorden is an expert at combat, trains at it regularly at the Black Mesa combat training course, and the scientists there regard him less of a scientist and more as a brute.
The dialogue of the scientists reflects that constantly.
