I really don't want to make a "vermin smack each other in a shapeless battlefield" engine so it'd be something more complex

This is pretty good but I feel like the foundation of vermin has to be more directly combative than indirectly competitive.
So probably going with Puyo Puyo then.

The question is, should this be full Puyo (combos make garbage, fill opponent's board to win) with some kind of special vermin gameplay additions to give the stats a purpose, or should it be a semi-smacky vermin fight powered by puyo gameplay (matching starts an attack, take garbage when taking damage, get stunned when board is filled, recovery after your board is filled depends on lifes and fasts, etc)?

Something simple but unique like the original three starters. Maybe a creature resembling of a small real life critter, like gen 1 pokemon, but still look like a monster

I don't know about keeping abilities. In the dream I had since there were no abilities hosts were able to crank out tournaments fairly quickly which kept people interested (because let's be honest Yas Forums has the attention span of a fly)
