As someone who only played Persona 4 and playing 5 now how are Persona 1 and 2?
As someone who only played Persona 4 and playing 5 now how are Persona 1 and 2?
2 has the better story tied 3 and overall is better then 5 and 4 no question. Though it has the weakest gameplay in comparison
1 is the same deal but it’s story is on par with 4
Forgotten games with shit remasters on the PSP.
They're alright games but if you want to play them in the right way you'll have to play the Japanese version of Persona 1 on the PSX and the same for Persona 2.
non canon
the epitome of mediocreness loved by contrarians, don't waste your time unless you have plenty of it
1 > EP > 3 > IS > 5 > 4
Daily reminder
1 and 2 feel relatively generic as JRPGs. They have that ordinary poor pacing that many old school JRPGs have.
Bad taste
These
Oh no user. Now you've done. You've lied on Yas Forums and said you like P1.
Now you need to do the following without looking it up
>Name all party members
>Name 10 things that happen in the game
Play 2 for the story even if the gameplay is a little weak, it worth you time justfor the charaters and story alone.
And avoid the west version Of 1
Daily reminder that first three games (IS and EP counts as two) and the second three games are in their own seperate universes.
Using this logic we can assume that P6, P7 and P8 will be thier own games as well.
But hey, that's juuuust a theory. A Yas Forums theory! Thanks for watching.
It's actually secretly omega taste. You know how you personababs say P3 is the secret good taste choice? And P2 fans say 2 is the SECRET secret good taste choice? Because us P1 fans are another layer deeper into the secret good taste.
I've already done this game with you before, friend. Meanwhile I just finished replaying SEBEC and finally finished SQQ, so you can take your little self home.
1 and 2 are rough in the gameplay department, but they're much better than the nu-persona games in story, writing and atmosphere. be prepared to notice how much hackshino ripped off from 1 and 2 in his games.
>likes lain and persona 1
man i disagree with you but i respect your opinion
dem shits boring, the OP good tho
nice bait. There aren't 10 things happening in P1
except for that based military shop
Pretty fucking shit, ignore anyone who says they're good.
If you haven't played P3, go for that one instead. It has the same mechanics as P4 and P5 but isn't as shitty as P4.
i don't see how 1 and 2 are poorly-paced, especially compared to the nu-persona games which all have severe pacing issues. 3 in particular is the worst-paced game i've ever played in my life.
>There aren't 10 things happening in P1
user it's the fastest paced game in the entire series, shit is happening all the time. within the first 15 minutes, the hospital gets fucked up and filled with zombies and yamaoka dies. you'd have to be insane to think nothing happens in that game.
Why is EP higher than IS? Beat both, but EP felt like I was replaying IS with less character development. Shame since the EP cast seemed way more interesting.
I tried it when it came out and hated how I couldn't control my characters.
So how does one play Persona 2 anyways? Seem one half is just on PSX (poorly done it seems) and the second part is the PSP version.
Because EP tunes up the difficulty just enough to make it not the most boring fucking slog in terms of gameplay. Also get fucked, EP's cast is great, just because they're not sugoi desu onii-chan anime teenagers like the IS cast doesn't mean they're not developed.
Because 1 and 2 are just poorly paced JRPGs with their story. 3, 4 and 5 are Visual Novels outside the gameplay.
The psx trilogy is fine and worth playing if you want more traditional rpgs and are tired of the shitty monthly pacing of the nu-purseowner games
>I've already done this game with you before, friend
Okay, if you've passed already you're fine. Enjoy P1
There certainly is, but the game is so forgettable that I doubt you could even name 5 things unless you truly liked it.
I just said they were more interesting. This is especially true because they aren't fucking teenagers. But the writing goes nowhere with most of them besides Baofu.
>So how does one play Persona 2 anyways?
Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment both have PSP ports which are recommended, but the port of EP was never localized, and the fan translation isn't finished. But for some fucking reason, EP was localized on the original playstation whereas IS wasn't. So as it stands, if you want to play officially localized versions, you play IS on the PSP, then EP on PSX.
>poorly done it seems
You're probably thinking of 1, which had an infamously botched localization. The PSP port is better in basically every regard, but the soundtrack was changed and you can't choose the original, which some people hate so much that they play an English patched version of the Japanese PSX release. Which is extreme, considering how much more smoothly the PSP version plays. The PSP version does have a fan patch to restore the old music, but it's kinda busted and incomplete.
I think I would rather die than try to summon a persona via cards in P2
but they aren't. they move from plot point to plot point at a reasonable tempo without the long droughts of nothingness you always see in modern persona games. the vn element isn't even what ruins the pacing of nu-personas, it's specifically the calendar system.
There are two persona 2's. IS which is first one and then EP which is second. Persona 1 is very good (PSP version with improvements if you are from nupersona) everything is good but the gameplay which I would emulate so you can use the emulators speed up feature in battle.
Persona 2 has a better story but the combat is actually worse. Only thing good improvement is that you can work with the starting personas since in oldsona getting new personas is fucking awful. Only play EP after you beat IS and if you like it since many consider it a downgrade.
Also IS mentions a bunch of shit from persona 1 so play persona 1 first.
Persona 1 has better bosses and music with better combat but IS has better characters and story with less of a grind.
Why do people suck off P5 ost over 4s, and 3s?
Like some of the songs are ok but I just find 3s better in general and 2 despite not using Vocals at all do a better job then the majority of the others
>You're probably thinking of 1
Maybe. Just thought I've seen someone comment on cutting content or something to do with that.
But playing a PSX localization and a PSP sounds insanely weird. Can't imagine names and other things being retained.
The pacing is pretty good but it depends on whether or not you enjoy the gameplay. I imagine most people hate the slow combat, high encounter rate and long dungeons, so it can feel like a slog in-between story segments
just because the IS cast is young doesn't mean they're "sugoi desu onii-chan." they're well-written, multi-dimensional and feel like actual friends. even the weakest link of the cast (lisa) has more going for her than nu-persona characters.
that being said, the EP cast is also really good. the dynamic is just a little different since it's an older cast.
>Daily reminder that first three games (IS and EP counts as two) and the second three games are in their own seperate universes.
Except when Kei Nanjo gets interview on a television show during P3 and it's mentioned that the Nanjo foundation is a rival to Mitsuru's
> But for some fucking reason, EP was localized on the original playstation whereas IS wasn't
Either gay party member or Hitler, each could be a viable reason.
It's funny how 2's gameplay is worse than 1's in basically every fucking way imaginable. It's somehow way shallower and yet also way more of a chore.
>can't just talk to a demon once and get their singular card, have to farm the fuck out of a million cards to fuse something
>no positioning in combat, meaning the one thing P1 had to make it unique is gone
>fusion spells make no fucking sense and require you to go out of your way to set them up every single time you want to use them, in a system designed to be played as an autobattler
>characters only have one negotiation skill each, with only combinations having different effects, but 90% of the time the two characters will just refuse to negotiate together and you'll end up with only one character negotiating anyway
>adding items to fusions is gone, meaning making the precise persona you want with the precise abilities you want is fucking impossible
>dungeons are simpler to navigate, but also way shittier to map out because of all the open space
It's seriously astounding to me how a game can crash so fucking hard downward from the previous game in terms of gameplay. P1 isn't a masterpiece but it's a competent megaten game, where 2 is almost actively intolerable to play.
play these with an emulator and use save states, combat is garbage. great story though.
Reminder that as long as you aren't anal about the localization Revelations is perfectly serviceable
4's soundtrack is annoying and 3's soundtrack clashes with the emo aesthetic of the game.
1, 2 and the pq games have better soundtracks than 5, though.
>Can't imagine names and other things being retained.
They changed every character's name to make the PSX Persona 1 was set in an american school, complete with racebending the characters. 'Mark' is hilarious. (not quite as hilarious as Jamaican Cielo in DDS though)
I played 60 hours of Persona 3 and didn't get anything. Seems kinda pretentious
I liked P1 but I dropped P2 at the after the boss against the P1's teacher.
How do you literally cut half the content out of the game and have it be servicable?
>cutting content
Yeah that's 1, the PSX localization cut out the entire secret second route because they thought it'd be too confusing or some shit.
>Can't imagine names and other things being retained
It's not as bad as you might think. All the names of the new characters are the same, they didn't change Maya to Maria or whatever. It's the P1 cast that's the problem, because they WERE changed in the PSX version, meaning they had to compromise. For example, in 1, "Kei Nanjo" was changed to "Nate Trinity." He returns in 2, where they call him "Nate Nanjo." Which is funny, because in 1, they changed "Yukino Mayuzumi" to just "Yuki," as if that's less Japanese. So when she comes back in 2 and interacts with her old classmates it's like, "Oh hey Nate, hey Mary, it's me! Y'know, Yukino Mayuzumi! From American High School!"
Persona 2 is literally not fun to play at all.
The encounter rate is insane and the battles are the worst part of the game.
The story is cool though, just watch a let's play and save yourself the pain.
Based
Based and Kaneko pilled
i think the story of 2 is good and the atmosphere is cool, but the game is crippled by the gameplay. the enemy encounter pacing is terrible and desu that is my main complaint with early smt games too (at least nocturne).
Isn't Persona 1 on PSP the best version though if you just patch in the original music?
>Kaneko specifically designed St. Hermelin's uniforms as gray to represent the two sides of Maki, the black and the white, coming together
>every official iteration since then has been green
I feel like fucking Chris chan reeing about blue arms. I lost my fucking shit seeing the P1 DLC in 5 turn out to be fucking green. IT WAS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF VISUAL DESIGN YOU FUCKS YOU CAN'T JUST CHANGE IT TO GREEN BECAUSE GRAY WAS "TOO BORING." THEY'RE SCHOOL UNIFORMS OF COURSE THEY'RE FUCKING BORING.
P1 is good, P2 has a good plot but is held back by mediocre gameplay. They're both very different from the modern persona games and are more like their father series shin megami tensei.
There are no social links, the games are more surreal and dream like and thus can come off as campy see all the nazis in P2 and the MIB in P1. The jojo influence is a lot more blatant with the persona designs. They're a lot more human looking than the inorganic designs of the newer games. Unfortunately theres no definitive version of these games (the psp remakes butcher the osts of both and the PS1 versions suffer from shoddy localization).
I say go for it but don't go in expecting the sa.same type of experience you'd get from P4 and P5.
But Nocturne's encounter rate is fine
What the fuck
The ost is still butchered unfortunately
It’s not like it matters anymore, I will still stand by the fact that Kaneko is peak Megatan Art the P2 posters are way to damn good.
Yas Forums
>hurr durr gameplay is the most important thing
>persona 1 is the best game
when will this faggotry end
>The ost is still butchered unfortunately
How so?
Dungeon crawling bad dating sim good.
Iirc the file compression is fucky and the songs don't loop right. I may be wrong though.
When you admit that 1 can reasonably be considered the best in the series depending on preferences.
1 is a decent dungeon crawler with mediocre story and characters
2 is a good visual novel with probably the worst JRPG gameplay
They're both better than P4 and 5 though
This but only if you include the Snow Queen Quest
maybe i’m just impatient or something but for me it’s literally every 10 steps and i just can’t take it
>mediocre story and characters
still better story and characters than 4 and 5
simple, concise, and direct with its themes rather than a convoluted mess about how we live in a society
plus i'd say the p1 cast just display their arcs more subtlty and through optional dialogue rather than literally screaming their character motivations while awakening their personas
It be better if everyone had their own shadow to face like how 4 did
Do you think people praise P1 for the story and characters? Or do you think when people say gameplay they only mean the basic mechanics and not the overall design of the game?
>early smt games too (at least nocturne)
Nocturne's random encounter rate is almost perfect compared to other SMT games. Play SMT1 if you think Nocture is bad. But at least SMT1-2 have first person battles with minimal animations so the battles don't last that long.
Of course. But some people think P1 and 2 are extremely mature games with great writing and that's not the case. P1 definitely has a darker tone but the writing and dialogues are still shounen-tier at most places
1 has its own severe gameplay issues. for instance, many of the dungeons are poorly designed and just not fun at all. they were obsessed with putting in tons of dead ends with nothing in them, not even an item, so trying to explore each floor is pointless. the encounter rate in the ps1 version is obnoxious. the grid battle system is very dull - i'd point to trails in the sky as a game that does it right by comparison.
1 and 2 would both benefit from full remakes that fix the dungeon design and use 5's battle and fusion systems.
>Do you think people praise P1 for the story and characters?
for me, the atmosphere is the main appeal of p1. the twin peaks vibe it has going on stands out from the rest of the series. having two full storylines to choose from is also nice.
Plus Meguro cut like half of the soundtrack and now the overworld doesn't even have different themes depending on how far into the game you are/plot stuff happens to the overworld
