Come join me in my playblog of SF1. Last thread I got stuck at the Kane boss battle since my party was underleveled. A kind user suggested I do some grinding, but me being a stubborn man, fought against Kane once more and after throwing character after character at Kane, I finally won. It was a tough battle though, most of my melee attackers were dealing 1 or 2 damage per strike.
How is Shining Resonance Refrain? My schizophrenic friend bought it for me before the pandemic (he used to be big into the series until the PS2 era). I know nothing about this series and have never played any of the games.
Will I have fun or a decent time at least?
Andrew White
This fight introduces a new enemy, the Belial. Similar to the gargoyle, it is a flier with decent attack. But its strength lies in its ability to cast Bolt 2 (that lightning spell).
Having won that battle, I finally enter Mishaela's castle. And this is where I absolutely had to grind. So far in this playthrough I haven't even used that Egress-grind trick, not even once. But Mishaela is a different beast. Not only is she so hard that I can only deal 1-2 damage per swing, but she also regenerates HP every turn. The numbers simply weren't in my favour, it was statistically impossible for me to win. My damage output was LOWER than her regen. Bear in mind that at this point I only had 5 promoted units. Exasperated, I finally gave in and started grinding some of my unpromoted units up to level 18 to promote them. First up is Max. I've never played the newer Shining games, though I do own the 3 PSP ones. Can't really comment on Resonance Refrain. From the reviews online, it seems decent-ish?
Balbaroy also finally gets his chance. However, woe is me since both of my healers (Lowe and Khris) are still low level. Imagine that, fighting against Mishaela and her Bolt 3 and BEING UNABLE TO USE AURA since none of my characters had that. I had to heal every bolt-damaged character individually. Shit was tough.
After like 5 or 6 Egress-grinds, I finally manage to kill Mishaela, that carbon-coated bastard. Best Girl™ Tao gets the honour of the killing blow. BTW her upgraded form looks siiiiiiick.
Mishaela was a tough bastard. The hardest fight so far. But we beat her and with that Chapter 6 ends. Thanks. Bear in mind that for the this thread thus far and the next couple screenshots, this isn't a live playblog given the fact that I actually managed to beat Mishaela "off-thread". I'll notify when I've reached the point for liveblogging.
You seem to be missing the most important section of the game between your part 1 and part 2 threads. Where is the part where you get gangraped by wizard clowns?

Chapter 7 opens up in a very strange town full of idiots on the surface and geniuses below ground.
Yeah, the early parts were kinda messy, sorry. I did a lot of progress without posting when the thread was ARCHIVED.com but I will try to not do so anymore. I'll post as I play.
Ooh hey Shining Force! I seem to have more memories of SF2 but still, great. It's strange that Nintendo refused to release Fire Emblem games back in the NES / SNES days so for many in the west the Sega "knockoff" was the first introduction to the genre
Suspiciously enough, the King in this here town of Prompt has the same portrait as the King from earlier in the game. I forget, it might've been Guardiana's king. But, chalk it up to Camelot's (then Sonic Software Planning) limited resources and not a doppelganger shape-shifting impersonator subplot.
>What the fuck even is that? Just a relic of the 90's

Upgraded Max with the Sword of Light is hella cool. Bear in mind that this is the 2nd game in the Shining series and I like how Camelot managed consistency between the Sword of Light in both games. They both cast Bolt 2 when used. I think that's neat. "HIKARI YO!" -Gourry Gabriev Oh, that Waral King-Merchant?
A couple of new enemies here. The Wyvern's physical attack isn't all too scary but they can breathe fire much like the earlier Hellhounds and that's pretty dangerous.
Here's another new enemy, the Torch Eye. Shoots laser beams ala LASER EYE but not as retardedly slow nor absurdly devastating. Dangerous foes, sure, but not buttclenchingly so.
I played the hell out of this game as a kid but I never knew items could cast spells. Which is stupid because I played the shit out of FF1 as well which features item usage heavily.
Ethan Foster
And here we are! The Tower of Ancients. This is where my off-thread playing stops and my live-blogging begins. I haven't beaten this yet. Wish me luck. Doesn't seem too difficult other than that lone Demon Master standing before a chokepoint. That will be annoying, I can tell.
Do you plan on picking up the last few hidden characters?
Benjamin Adams
Explain why you are not using Hanzo and the robot guy
Nolan Stewart
A lot of the rare items and weapons can cast spells. The aforementioned Fire Axe () casts Blaze 2, the Speed Ring casts Egress, etc. IIRC if you use an item too much it'll break and you have to repair it at a wepaons shop. Much better than in Shining in the Darkness where a broken item is broken forever and lost and you have to repair it in advance as soon as there are warnings of imminent breakage.
Blake Collins
>if you use an item too much it'll break and you have to repair it at a wepaons shop Yeah, I still think younger me was retarded because I never had any use for the Repair option yet I knew it was there.

I explained in a previous thread that this playthrough is blind so stuff like >secrets >character tiers >etc. are unknown to me since I do not like using a guide for my first playthrough. I did play and finish SD2 a long time ago but for SF1 I've only ever played a bit but never finished it. Until now that is.
Hudson Peterson
Dang I missed part 2 and 3

Gottcha, some of your posts seem like you have more advanced knowledge than you let on, casual play throughs are more fun to watch anyway.
I literally never leveled a single healer and just ambushed her from behind with Domingo. It's possible to use Haste or whatever that one ring is to actually catch her BEFORE she reaches the throne, ending the battle early (and much easier).
Levi Nguyen
Adam's garbage unless you take a lot of time to level him and he's absolutely worthless on every overworld map due to his terribly low movement.
Levi Sanchez
I did miss Jogurt though ;_; RIP never ever recruited.
William Gray
Collect the chest before the map ends or else the item inside will disappear. It's the strongest lance in the game if I remember right, the Valkyrie.
Hudson Russell
I think he meant Guntz, since we're just starting Ch7? But the point still stands, both of their movement is trash.
Lucas Evans
I will, thanks.
Nathan Brooks
My Lowe is still an unpromoted level 12 shitter. I want my characters to be a bit higher level before promoting. >tfw still no Aura on any healer
Also! As a refresher, my currently active Shining Force: >Max >Domingo >Tao >Khris >Balbaroy >Ken >Diane >Mae >Gort >Luke >Gong >Lowe Lowe, Khris and Gong are still unpromoted.
Diane has been useful in her flexibility but her damage output is still very lacking. A bit of a disappointment, really. Perhaps I should've swapped her out for Anri instead, though a little too late for that now.
Huh, I actually kinda liked this mission. At first I thought for sure I'd be annoyed by the long "corridors" and stair-chokepoints but so far it hasn't been too annoying. But we're still not done. The Demon Master still awaits.
