I'm going to lay it on everyone as harashly and bluntly as I can but beyond Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Eggman literally no other character in the entire franchise has a purpose or reason to exist other than to solely be cheerleaders for one of the previously four mentioned. Even Shadow, whose entire purpose was to serve as the catalyst and end of SA2 has a definitive purpose outside of that other than to be a foil for Sonic.

All Tails has is facilitating plane levels, and Knuckles is right there with Shadow in having no purpose beyond what niche thing they're connected to for a given game's story.

Knuckles at least has the benefit of having a unique and consistent feature to his character that can change up gameplay.
Gameplay wise, Tails and Knuckles always has a reason and purpose outside of being Sonic cheerleaders by offering a different playthrough and play-style.
The only other game that offered character with differing styles was SA1 (SA2 effectively only had 3 characters but with 2 different skins for each) and half of SA1's play throughs is complete garbage with minimal effort.

This doesn't really mean anything. Technically, Tails and Knuckles don't have a reason to exist either, since all you need is a protagonist and antagonist, and you could even go as far as to say you don't need Eggman either, just have some looming disaster be the "antagonist" instead. You could say some of these characters are redundant compared to others, or aren't interesting enough on their own to warrant future appearances, though then you'd actually have to make a proper argument.
Calling Gamma's gameplay complete garbage is ridiculous, and his character provided a unique perspective into Eggman's badniks. And Amy in the Advance games shows that she can have satisfying gameplay too.

Sonic 2 gave you the ability to play as Tails and Sonic 3 gave you the ability to play as Tails and Knuckles which offered up different playthroughs and entirely different paths through levels.
That's far more than a large portion of the Sonic cast has ever offered.
