The ending implies the next installment will continue on as FF7 intended, searching for Sephiroth. Don't know why you're expecting backlash.

No it doesn't. It implies things will be different, ala MK9 and Sindel moving forward. So everything you liked about the original, you can expect it to NOT show up in the future. Aerith dying? No. Rufus Shinra's parade? No. Trying to sneak around the Midgar Zolom? Gone. Cloud's flashback story in Kalm? Gone. We've already met and fought Sephiroth who can hurl literal buildings at people, so most of that will be unnecessary. Hell, the tagline for the credits involves the "Unknown" future. People expecting a proper retelling of VII's story are in for a wild ride.

It's a scene from Advent Children showing Midgar in ruins in the alternate timeline.

Not based on the context of the final bosses and scenes leading up to it. They are shown visions of FFVII's events and are fighting to stop it from happening. When in the original game did Aerith know she was going to die in Midgar? Or that Meteor would hit the planet or Red XIII would be overlooking a ruined Midgar 500 years later?

basically except that now cloud knows that aeris is gonna die at some point and they wanna change that, now that the spirits are dead. But turns out sephiroth wants this so we will see.
Basically, part 2 is gonna be the same except obviously for minor details like possible biggs living. But the travel around teh world for sephiroth, the same.

The inclusion of continuity spirits keeping the timeline in check so the events of FF7 happen as they originally occured, which you battle and defeat late in the game when Sephiroth from a separate timeline appears to change his fate.

Well Nomura was in charge, and when Nomura is in charge you get retarded shit. That wouldn't be a problem if that wasn't fucking with the original FF7 plot.
It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't advertise it this whole time as a normal remake. And if they go with the "Sephiroth from an alternate timeline/time traveller/saw the future" angle, it will be even fucking worse, since it would probably only exist PURELY to make an excuse to have Aerith live.

Because if you haven’t beaten the OG/seen advent children it doesn’t make sense - and why wouldn’t they show the whole clip - or at least just the part where Midgar is revealed? It doesn’t make sense. Must be some sort of bug.

You only played with her on the first CD and you could still bug the game if you wanted to waste time with that dead weight with useless limits on the team, you're supposed to have people with as many hits on the limit break as you can so you can 7777 one shot your way through optional and endgame bosses, that's the entire point of the game.

Having alternate timelines makes writing easier which is why hacks love it; there is not need for rules or consistency.
