Yknow what's less satisfying than the hl2 pistol? The hl2 smg without grenades. The noise is too high on the treble, hurts your ears with shit damage.
HL1's glock was way more satisfying than HL2's USP.

This still the worst gun ever.
Because it would have been too over powered with dual wielding weapons. One hand has magnum, other has plasma pistol. Charge shot to kill shield and one shot from magnum to kill. It was too powerful so they cycled it until reach where they got rid of dual wielding so there was no longer a problem.

It was too overpowered anyway. Halo 1's weapon sandbox was so broken that you spawn with the second best weapon in the game and there's absolutely no reason to pick up anything other than the sniper. It's just like that DMR spawn shit they pulled in Reach.
He's right though. It sounds good, is more useful than the MP5, and at the time I recall thinking its model and animations were pretty impressive. It was cool to see the little casings eject and watch Gordan replace the magazine. Probably there had been other games that had reload animations at the time, but HL1 was the first time I noticed them.

It worked perfectly fine for the metrocops if you headshoted them. Felt like shit against all the other types of enemies.

Half-Life 1 had great feeling weapons with shit damage. Half-Life 2 had weak feeling weapons with great damage.
HL1 has a better arsenal. HL2 feels like they stopped when they had the standard stuff done because muh gravity gun. Yes it was a nice gimmick. The rest of the arsenal still feels half assed because all other weapons are from HL1 except the shitty pulse rifle. Tau Cannon was a much better feeling weapon. And you had the Gluon Gun and Hive Hand as bonus.

It's slightly better, but literally only because it fires twice as many bullets, still suffers the same spread issues
it's a billion million times worse though, since the guns do shit damage.
IIRC it actually has the damage of the Doom 2 SS but it's so spread out you basically have to use it as a melee weapon to be effective.

Make it stronger but give it less ammo. A shotgun doesnt have to be the first gun you get after the pistol. I know it seems to be a unwritten rule of fps.

The Doom/Doom 2 pistol is so universally shitty that basically every map gives you a shotgun 10 ft from the level entrance just so you can use it as your default instead, and has the minigun use the pistol's ammo just so there's an actual use for that ammunition.

That would make sense if it wasn't for the absolute beast of a plasma rifle and chaingun in the game, so clearly they had no problem putting effective weapons into the game, they just fucked the shotgun up bad.

I remmeber first time I played Halo against a mate, he said he'd only use the pistol to keep the skill gap fair. I was under standard FPS logic of Pistol = Worst Gun. Boy, did not take long to figure out he was fucking with me with that.
Then I figured out the map, where he was camping, how to get in his blind spots and things levelled out.

My aim isnt the problem. I spend my youth with UT and Q3. HL2 is piss easy. The pulse rifle has a higher dps if you can aim. The ammo count is still very low and the alternative fire mode is strong but gimmicky. The primary fire mode feels extremely unsatisfying to use. The shotgun, revolver and crossbow are fine in HL2. The devs want to force the players to use the gravity gun, thats why you can only carry small amounts of ammo.
HL2 is a game that requires no skill at all though
