Is vr really that good? I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. How is it?
Well it literally tricks your brain into feeling like you are there. For example I replayed Hl1 and 2 again in VR and it felt like a completely new experience. Walking around black mesa in HL1 was interesting because I felt like I knew what it was like to be an employee there.
Now apply this to Alyx where it was specifically designed around VR and you have some pretty crazy shit.
Eventually VR becomes "normal" in that the wow factor goes away but what that means is that non VR games become boring while VR becomes the new standard. At least that is how it is for me.
Seems to me like people are defending the "I bought a 700 dollar vr set for a single game". Or people like OP who have trouble immersing themselves in a normal game. I'm going to wait a few more weeks and see if I should buy a set or not.
VR isn't a replacement, but an alternate. In most ways,it's better than a flatscreen experience (visuals, interaction, immersion), but it's still missing some comfy and details features such as the amount of enemies and no limit of movement speed
I've used VR ocasionally since OG Vive. Most other games that I played are gimmicky. I knew that VR if done right can be game changing but I had yet to see anyone attempt that. HL:A is the killer app of VR althought i'm not sure if it's worth getting VR just yet. Because no other experiance at this moment can come close. Wait couple months. Once valve releases source 2 toolkit and map making tools community mods will make wait for another killer app bearable
same. I bought VR first batch (vive), there's nothing wrong with the technology, but the developers are either lacking details or are just plain lazy. Alyx is the first game with real effort, but we have to wait until other companies finally join in to get started. Consoles usually have 1 or 2 games when it comes out, and many more in the works for years to come... but what about VR? where are the big "upcoming" titles? For the price you pay, the content sucks
>$700
Where do you live? Rift S is less than $400
Thats only true for alyx. There are VR games with dozens of enemies and super fast movement.
>no melee
>because there is no melee, if you ever run out of ammo you are soft locked in the game
>only 3 weapons, of which have very limited and useless upgrades (literally no point in taking reflex sight when you unlock laser sight)
>cannot use more than one weapon at a time
>no actual jumping
>no sprinting
>objects in the environment have very limited intractability (ie, lighting a lighter or spraying the can of paint)
>puzzles are a fucking bore and incredibly easy
>very limited physics based puzzles on SOURCE 2 POINT FUCKING 0 ENGINE
>very limited enemy variety
>dumb as rocks enemies that often times won't move when a live grenade is next to them
>ending retcons previous games
>no vehicles you can use
>incredibly linear to the point that the game could have been a ride-the-rails shooter
>not enough resin to upgrade all your weapons
>very small enemy engagements, typically 3-4 enemies
>zombies and antlions are incredibly slow to match your slow speed
>cannot toggle flashlight despite large portions of the game being indoors and dark
>you play as a voiced protagonist in a virtual reality game, breaking immersion
Fuck, how can anyone even pretend like this game was anything above "meh"?
I only dislike the ending more I think about it. Valve literally only shit it out to appease their dumb fans and win back their good will after 13 years of radio silence. They completely flushed the previous episodes down the fucking drain and by extension the original intended story. Now instead of feeling like a cohesive story with a beginning middle and an end it feels like a hodgepodge of different writers, different talent, different direction. And now time-travel? This is comic book tier writing, complete with the obvious fan-service to make dummies clap and chimp out. And Valve isn't even going to MAKE episode 3. FUCK off.
>If you have shit item management you die (except not really because you can always get ammo)
>Retard doesn't realize you take reflex site because it is 1/3 the price of laser sight
>Puzzles get harder later in the game
I can tell you didn't play the fucking game
>Retcon
Same way portal 2 "retconned" Portal 1s ending
Future sight was something that was implied and stated all the way back in hl1 and 2. Nothing new was added
It's definitely a good medium and imo has a lot of potential. It's not going to replace traditional gaming but it's probably going to be an optional thing for a lot of games I think
I'm pretty jaded when it comes to spooky shit but HLA got me a couple times, due to just how in your face it all is
You can increase movement speed with launch options. Since the game seems to be balanced around the teleport speed, it wouldn't even be considered cheating. 150 will match HL2, but I set mine a bit lower since VR feels faster just because of the way you see it:
+hlvr_continuous_normal_speed 150 +hlvr_continuous_combat_speed 150
Thanks for your impressions. I find the concept vr quite interesting, but I didn't have the impression that there are good games for it. That seems to change now. I think I will get it soon.
nice greentext usage now its time to go back
I don't mean by that, I can play any VR game with decent speed. I just mean you can bunny hop and shoot like mad in a flatscreen game, but in VR you just can't do this without stressing yourself and getting worked up. Not unless they figure out a solution to this, flatscreen is superior in this aspect, and I love VR
Retard. It's literally used the same way greentext has been used for over a decade
>TFW can't go back to playing flat FPS
not really getting this, theres no way i can get the same experience from VR that doom will give me
>Future sight was something that was implied and stated all the way back in hl1 and 2
Bullshit.
You can play DOOM 1 and 2 in VR
So it literally can
youtube.com
Ok thinking about it the vortigaunts can see into the future, but if G-Man can too then why didn't he see the voritgaunts blocking him from Gordon in his master plan.
Also Doom 3 which is awesome.
I don't see what the problem would be other than the glory kills and auto ledge climbing in the new games that would be awkward in VR. Just focus mostly on laser pointer style aiming like Serious Sam VR games did so you don't need to slow down to aim down sights. I would have been much more likely to buy Doom Eternal right away if it had VR support.
I really want this. Considering how much Bethesda likes making VR ports I really hope we get this.
>most iconic ending possibly ever
>retconned because nonsensical time travel
fuck you, valve.
I feel your pain, just let go user. Let it go.
>youtube.com
>HL2 ep 2
>Most iconic ending
Wrong underage retard
>Retconned
Wrong again retard
It sucks the game never takes the training wheels off, it's way too easy. You have an encounter with three enemies and you can just rush them and kill them in 5 seconds with the shotgun before the music even starts ramping up. I guess that's why ammo was so rare in the game. Insanely strong and you have 7 shells + auto reloading. I get they didn't want people to have to manually reload every 2 shells but it makes the weapon really OP. On the other hand the pistol was really unsatisfying because of how it literally takes 8 shots to the head to kill a basic combine enemy (and people complained about the HL2 pistol). It would have been way more fun and fast paced to be rushed by 6+ enemies and be able to kill them in 2-3 headshots, instead of just dropping 2-3 enemies but make them sponge pistol bullets. Hard mode should add extra enemies instead of just scaling player/enemy health.
Searching around the place for ammo/resin relies heavily on the novelty that you're still wow'd by physics interactions - knocking over objects with your hands and opening draws. When you've played a lot of VR that novelty wears off and it gets boring quick and then a large part of the game is reduced to monotonously rummaging through garbage.
I hate how the game was so obviously designed for teleporting. It feels so janky and half assed to suddenly be forced to teleport to make a jump. The game badly needs a sprint button too. You're forced to teleport to run essentially, unless you're content on walking at a very slow pace.
And the obvious: 3 weapon limit, no melee.
WHEN IS VR GOING TO BE IN STOCK AGAIN I HAVE THE SHEKELS
>It sucks the game never takes the training wheels off, it's way too easy.
This has been true for every Half-life game since 2. The games have never been hard.
Well, now what I do?
This game is so on the next fucking level I can't enjoy other shooters anymore.
Yeah just don't get worked up. Thats a user issue
How? 50% of the game is searching through trash trying to find upgrades and ammo.
10% is actual fucking combat
the rest is walking
Play boneworks, the superior VR game.
New update coming on the 9th bonechads.
well it most definitely is one of the most infamous cliff hanger in gaming history.
The training wheels come off in the next game. Too many people would buy a VR headset just to play this one game, it had to be made for people with 0 VR legs.
Because that combat is on the other fucking level when it happens. And I love looking through trash too. Also visuals, I can't shake the feeling of really being there off.
Played it the moment it came out, and I prefer the controls from Boneworks. But the gunplay is much better in Alyx, IMO.
have sex
I'm going to nut into my big tiddy goth gf later. This is game time.
>Because that combat is on the other fucking level when it happens.
I actually found the combat quite dull and lacking.
>hide behind cover
>peak around corner
>shoot enemy when they're reloading
>rinse and repeat.
what other genres would even work in VR aside from first person games? I think RTS could be kind of neat but you'd lose the high apm shit
I guess you could do that but it's far more fun to
>Switch between cover
>Run up onto a combine
>Blast them in the face
>Run back into cover
Congratulations, you described every shooter ever.
But you also have an option to not be a bitch and play more aggressively.
3D platformers work really fucking well because you can see depth.
Any simulator game works really well in VR, look at Elite or ATS.
Were you playing on easy or something
The walking speed is far to slow to be aggressive unless you cheat and use the jump feature.
The strongest point of this game were the horror sections, atmosphere and suspense, all of which fail to work on replays because it's all scripted.
anything where you drive a vehicles. Some kind of musou game with weightless swords where you slice shit up like in Metal Gear Rising could work.
Alyx just scratched the surface of of what you could do in VR and i still think its miles better than traditional shooters.
Asseto corsa has a lot of players so i guess racing games. Elite dangerous is also very cool in VR.
I like it better on my second playthrough.
I don't feel the need to do every puzzle or scavenge since I know its only ever going to be the same two things. Still overrated though
Yes, the Jeff section is pretty nice.
The jump feature is pretty much essential with how they coded it. I wish you could have full Boneworks controls, but you have to jump around, yes. The enemies do correct for your jumps ahead of time though.
>Run
It's always Alyx Vs Boneworks
Why doesn't Yas Forums talk about The Walking Dead: Saint and Sinners which is just as amazing. All that gets shared is that one webm, you know the one
We'll have to wait 30 years for Nintendo to catch up and finally revolutionize 3D platformers in VR
game fucking sucked
>zombies dont get up in your face, just slowly waddle towards you
>no hl2 fast zombie
>no melee weaps
>cant hit enemies with physics objects like HL2
>2 NPCs in the entire quarantine zone
>never fight more than 3 combine at once
>combine are bullet sponge turrets that stand and shoot at you, never try to flank
>combine ai is retarded and will just stand on grenades you throw at them instead of having to cook grenades for effect
>movement is slow as fuck
>no jumping even with continuous movement
>have to do a shitty janky "puzzle" every time you want to get ammo from a combine box
>annoying marvel tier jokes over the in game radio constantly
>devoid of the oppressive atmosphere of hl2 apart from the very beginning
theres more issues with this game but this is what immediately comes to mind
I have a feeling people share my view here - I'm just so fucking done with the Walking Dead franchise that even if the game is good I just can't bring myself to suffer through another zombie game, especially one from that universe. Maybe later.
Breen has a model.
>Eventually VR becomes "normal" in that the wow factor goes away but what that means is that non VR games become boring while VR becomes the new standard. At least that is how it is for me.
This is accurate
But VR can and does still wow me periodically, it's just not perpetually tripping balls like the first week of it
Getting back into E:D lately, can't imagine playing that shit flat
The game is Windows 10 only, which I'm very fucking glad I didn't have to upgrade for Alyx
>lets make everything cartoony because were nuValve and can't be bothered with realism anymore
So how exactly is Gordon unwilling to work with gman and Alxy is willing to?
nobody cares, go suck a dick nigga
then ignore the title, it's a tier 1 survival game with decent on everything (graphics, story, physics). It's a must for VR
It's more of a taste test of things to come - you get handed a crowbar at the end. The reason they cut a lot of shit is it's meant to be a baby's first VR game, and they couldn't have all these people buying a headset just for this game getting vertigo and vomiting all over the place. Boneworks, which has much better controls tells you outright to fuck off if you haven't played a VR game before. So yeah, can't wait for more.
i played it. wasn't interesting enough to finish.
Idiot
I can confirm it's not, I have windows 8.1 and i play it just fine. Only Bigscreen beta is the only VR app
>It's more of a taste test of things to come
Did someone tell Valve VR has been out for 5 years? Did they forget about Vive, DK2 and all that?
Yes, it becomes normal to you, but then the flatscreen games feel really flat and shitty compared to VR. I've owned a VR HMD for a year now, and it I could never play Elite on a flatscreen again, and I don't get excited about flatscreen games that much anymore.
*Only Bigscreen beta is the only VR app that doesn't work for me
It’s weird. I think it’s like a 7 when I think about the gameplay but something about actually replaying it just captivates me so much. I boot it up for a random level maybe to get an achievement and then I find myself just playing for an hour or more, grabbing every resin or ammo thing that I can because it’s so fun
I guess the retconned setting an industry standard of graphics like they always did with Half-Life.
Did anyone tell your fucking retarded ass that despite VR being out for years it's still shallow as fuck save for a few experiences? Valve actually applied some ingenuity.
I see HL: Alyx like Mario Maker. The base is to introduce the tools, and the modding community will make the hardcore stuff with Source 2 SDK
I got it free because I have a Valve friends and family account and I still feel like I overpaid.
Well you are just ignoring the reality. This game alone probably doubled the VR market, Index HMDs are sold out and had been for half a year now. I've seen countless threads about people trying to find the "best" HMD to play Alyx with.
This was a lot of people's first decent VR experience so they can't just throw fast zombies at you.
I'm hoping they release an sdk soon so we can mes around and see what works in terms of gameplay for ourselves.
did you also get a free VR device?
Well Alyx can be added to that pile.
Yeah honestly I don't really want to play any normal games any more, I think I got the VR bug. Hopefully I won't go bankrupt buying all the VR games, don't really want to pirate.
HLA looks insanely realistic though?
You're an idiot.
Eh the environments do, the characters don't.
>You can play DOOM 1 and 2 in VR
HL1, Quake and Quake 2 and some other Quake engine games have unnoficial ports on Quest so you can play them untethered with max resolution. Just saying in case someone didn't know.
And I'm enjoying every minute of it.
How do normal games work with VR?
bunny hopping is for autistic people
I knew.
What do you mean? Like with VorpX or what?
I don’t care. When is the Artifact relaunch?
would say Alyx is the first "real" VR game, others for the most part feel gimicky or like a tech demo, and are usually very short.
if you want to play alyx buy a used one or borrow from a friend or something
Serious sam vr exists. Just because HL:A plays it safe doesnt mean thats VR
