I started watching youtube videos and did some reading on the internet and it looks like there are diminishing returns regarding the speed of solid state drives. Even an old 500MB/s stone age sata ssd is fast enough for any game and then the drive is no longer the bottleneck during loading.
But when the drive is no longer the bottleneck it turns out the the cpu speed becomes that bottleneck during loading and that when comparing systems with ssds but different cpus, the system with the faster cpu always has better loading times.
Since the PS5 is vastly outperformed by Xbox series X in regards to cpu speed, may it turn out that PS5 is going to have slower loading times than series x, even though it has the faster ssd? It seems to me, that the PS5s design is seriously flawed there.

Thats my thinking as well. They havent even shown any games actually running on ps5. I think that they are trying not have a real world comparison with the competition.
both next gen consoles supposedly use techniques which bypass most of the cpu processing with dedicated hardware for decompression (or that might just be for the xbox)
>Even an old 500MB/s stone age sata ssd is fast enough for my pc handmedown console games designed around 100MB/s mechanical drives
ftfy. How fast you can load a level really isn't the selling point, it's the kind of games you can design. Halo and Morrowind were literally only possible on xbox because it was the only console with a harddrive.
I don't give a shit about specs. I just want to know if digital games will be backwards compatible or if it's just discs.
The Xbox hard drive was 20x faster than the PS2 DVD drive. Even the DVD drive was a quarter faster. You're not looking at a gap like that this time.
Also the Xbox had 2x as much RAM, that counts for a lot.
holy fuck watch the fucking ps5 dev video, mark cenry clearly and I mean very clearly explains why an SSD on ps4 only means at most 2x loading screens and then goes on to explain how they address this on PS5 to allow the ps5 ssd to actually be used
also a hint, PS5 had dedicated silicon to handle mvoing the SSD data to RAM, the CPU doesn't have to do shit, they can literally use the data instantly due to the surrounding hardware they created for the SSD
they also added hardware decompression to decompress the ssd data in real time to allow 8-9GB/s of data in
So does the XSX.
yes but that doesn't mean OP isn't a complete fucking retard
>they also added hardware decompression to decompress the ssd data in real time to allow 8-9GB/s of data in
no the ps5 uses software decompression with kraken software hence why there isn't a doubling of the throughput (5.5gb/s to 9gb/s) like there is on the xbox (2.4gb/s to 4.8gb/s) which uses hardware decompression.
The PS5 is launching already outdated, but luckily it's storage wont hold back PC gaming. The Xbox is significantly better but even it will be outdated by 2022
holy fuck why do you have to write shit when you haven't even researched what you write? PS5 has hardware for compression for kraken data, kys you fucking clown
>marketer very clearly explains why POWER OF THE CELL is so epic
kraken is a software solution you inbred. read the fucking screenshot this guy is one of the leading computer scientists in this specific field.
It's because game engines are only ever made with the hardware they're going on in mind. Since SSDs were relatively rare for the past few generations, lazy engine programmers only expect HDD speeds to load data into RAM. So when you exceed that, few engines seldom take advantage of the extra overhead.

kys you fucking retard, I hate retards who think they understand anything
kraken is a compression algorithm you fucking retard and ps5 has dedicated hardware for kraken
in the ps5 video mark cerny literally explain this you absolute fucking retard, you geniune low iq monkey
the video even has pictures of the custom chip layout where you can see the hardwar compression block in it
also that shot has nothing to say about the ps5 compression being software, you're just retard
OP does have a point, SSD speeds do result in diminishing returns fast simply because you won't have enough RAM for sustained speeds to matter.
Once you can completely refresh RAM in under 5 seconds, going any faster doesn't matter unless you can use it for virtual memory/pagefile and the PS5 SSD definitely isn't fast enough for that.
An old SATA drive might be too slow but any NVMe drive is good enough.

eat shit and die
no it doesn't it has custom hardware for the IO. this has been explained by literally everyone from RGT to digital foundry and other tech sites. there's a reason why microsoft can double the throughput and sony can't. microsoft is using hardware based compressors/decompressors whereas ps5 is using a software solution called kraken. off yourself already you illiterate retard.
retard alert retard alert
a hdd loads fucking 100mb/s and you say there's not enough ram so an 500mb/s will not only yield in double the speed in loading, fuck off retard
it very fucking literally does you troglodyte

see you're embarrassing yourself.
You don't understand shit OP, watch this then neck yourself
you're embarassing your fucking monkey self you can't even understand when mark cerny literally explains the hardware decompression specifically and then you go on to think that it doesn't have harwdare decompression even though mark cerny literally and I mean literally says that the hardware decompression can take in 5GB/s of kraken compressed data
stop replying to this sony shill. the ps5 fucking sucks anyway.
Is Sony really going with that fucking awful design? It looks like one of those fake leaks that shows up before a new generation is officially announced, why would they even patent that shit?
Nobody's talking about HDDs retard. I'm saying that the importance of having a fast SSD diminishes fast once you exceed about 3-4GB/s of effective throughput.
yeah because having 16GB of ram means a 500MB/s SSD can fill it in 2 seconds...
shut the fuck up you illitarte retard who think he has some sort of fucking say in how things work even though you don't know anything
oh no no no no no
>500MB/s SSD
are you even reading a word I'm saying or are you just raging
yes but are you, retard I just said that you think that a 500MB/s SSD is enough to fill the ram fast enough
I said explicitly the opposite of that.
>I just said that you think
instead of saying what you think he said how about reading what he actually said
filling ram in 5 seconds vs 2 seconds will make a difference
>shut the fuck up you illitarte retard
Please pajeet marketers just stop. And if you are not a pajeet you are a ps fanboy who is seething so hard he cant even spell correctly when calling someone else an idiot.
>hot
>hardware failures
>even ssd overheats
oh no no no no no no
in that retard image the dude thinks the 10.3tf number applies to the CPU
btw just as you cherry pick these twitter screenshot of this piece shit PS5 I could just as well go cherry pick positive ones
what the FUCK was Sony smoking?
no, the consumer model is yet another generic square box. the dev kit is only like that to maximize cooling. apparently they're overheating anyway. should be entertaining.
>YouTube comment by guy that said sony is too bankrupt to make ps4
LOL
Hope they're happy with all that talent they found in CA
>raw SSD speeds
The numbers they showed suggests they're trying to RAID0 two smaller NVMe drives. Something usually only done for Video editing.
he's saying they basically nerfed cpu performance to achieve that 10.3tf gpu performance (max boost) you clinical retard. digital foundry even verified that just yesterday.
>There's likely more to discover about how boost will influence game design. Several developers speaking to Digital Foundry have stated that their current PS5 work sees them throttling back the CPU in order to ensure a sustained 2.23GHz clock on the graphics core.
off yourself already. imagine being this fucking dumb you can't comprehend basic english.
Fair enough.
What's your excuse for this source who has actual credibility then?
>Anyone following this stuff, talking to game devs and people in-the-know have been hearing similar rumblings for months now.
OH NO NO NO NO NO NO
>Powered by Cell all over again
Not really, the Cell was powerful just hard to code for. SSD is just not important when it comes to GPU power.
It won't. That's the range where asset stereaming is already maxed out, but before you can effectively make use of virtual memory. It's the doldrums of storage bandwidth.
>I like how we know that sony slanted performance stats on the CPU to 10.3
in current games maybe you fucking retard why can't you understand it's next gen and games developed for it will makes use of what's available
Cell was shit compared to Xenon. IBM learned nothing from Itanic.
>ps5 doesn't have hardware decompre-
It'll be excessive for next gen games too.
oh thanks for saying a random number you came up with is the limit for asset straming in next gen games while 9GB/s is excessive, sure I'll just take your retard word for it
Y-you're illitarte!
you're illitarded
>random number
What one circumstance can you think of where completely erasing RAM in under 5 seconds is a thing you actually want to do?
I really hate how Cerny can get away with blatantly lying through his teeth about the CPU/GPU speed and few people call him out on it.
If they both ran "near" their max boost speed "most" of the time then they wouldn't have bothered with dynamic clocks at all. It's a 3.2GHz CPU and 2GHz GPU that sometimes run higher/hotter for the sole purpose of increasing the specs Cerny can boast about.
explain why microsofts solution is superior then if they're both using the same hardware decompression
loading the game, loading a new level, what if you have textures only loaded in front of you and load textures into ram for things behind you as you turn, mark cerny said if the turning 180 takes 0.5 seconds then you can load around 4GB of data and that seems to be about right for next gen
>Since the PS5 is vastly outperformed by Xbox series X in regards to cpu speed, may it turn out that PS5 is going to have slower loading times than series x, even though it has the faster ssd?
No. you don't understand how busses work
They just took the pic from wikipedia LMAOOO
it's not superior, PS5 literally has the better i/o hardware and SSD, however microsoft seems to have a algorithm for better texture compression
>turning 180 takes 0.5
Oh God, Sony exclusives are going to be even slower and more cinematic than ever.
>I KNOW SO AND SO
>I TALK TO THEM ADN THIS IS WHAT THEY SAY
if you believe this, you have the mental capacity of a 7 year old child
woah how can sony ever recover from this one?
isn't that pretty standard for controller turning?
microsofts throughput when using their hardware compressor/decompressor literally DOUBLES the throughput. sony's doesn't. this isn't just about texture compression this is full IO throughput. it's not 4.8gb/s just for textures.
Looks to me like what you 'read on the internet' was written by people who aren't very tech literate.
>loading the game, loading a new level
In both of these situations your time budget is a few seconds long. Even if you're in an open world, moving from street block to street block, you can count on a few seconds lead time before you are in the thick of a completely new asset set.
>what if you have textures only loaded in front of you and load textures into ram for things behind you as you turn, mark cerny said if the turning 180 takes 0.5 seconds then you can load around 4GB of data and that seems to be about right for next gen
Your budget for camera movement is a dozen frames tops, any slower than that and you're crippling gameplay for muh grafix.
microsoft stated 2.8GB raw and 4.8GB uncompressed
sony stated 5.5GB raw and 8-9GB uncompressed
Kraken isn't specific to textures either.
what about this
oh no no no no no
if you turn 180 in 0.5s then you can load 4GB of data during that turn which is enough to load the textures
Based internet research user BTFO Sony engineers
>uncompressed
you're baiting right? and yeah that's literally what i said. microsofts hardware compressor/decompressor doubles the raw throughput. sony's doesn't. do the math it's not hard. if they were using the same hardware decompressors the ps5 would also be able to do 11gb/s effective.
This is why pcie4 mobo's have active chipset cooling.
And yet people with actual credentials and verified connections are all saying the exact opposite. Imagine that.
what about it? it's literally another person saying the exact same thing making it fourth hand instead of third hand
logic isn't your strong point, is it? the hardware also isn't finished
If it takes half a second to turn the camera you're watching a movie.
decompressed but they literally state those figures, microsoft uses zlib and their own texture compresison
ps5 uses kraken (better version zlib basically)
sony has 8-9GB/s of effective data
microsoft has 4.8GB/s of effective data
>Cell was shit compared to Xenon. IBM learned nothing from Itanic.
wot
It'd be funny if Lockhart ends up existing and MS enforces some kind of parity rule and they end up being the ones holding back devs.
play a game with a controller and you notice turning isn't as fast as with a mouse, half a second turn is very standard with thumbstick
Cell SPEs were shitty VLIW cores just like Itanium and they sucked dick for the same reason. The good part of the Cell, the PPE, was the heart of the Xbox 360's Xenon CPU.
