Horror games don't need to be scary

Horror games don't need to be scary.
Just like Horror films don't need to be.

They can be disturbing, gory or just unsettling.

Scares are just 1 tool devs can use, even jumpscares which are a perfectly legitimate tool to use, people just can't admit it got them and call them "cheap"

Uh-oh you just reminded me I haven't brush my teeth since I was 12...now I'm 28...I'm fucking scared to open my mouth in front of a mirror. Why user, why.

>Did the same thing and stopped brushing my teeth at like 12
>Justify it by saying, "Well, toothpaste probably didn't exist in caveman and midevil times, so it can't be that big of a deal".
>Was retarded and didn't realize that people back then CONSTANTLY had problems with their teeth and were losing them
>Not to mention that basically all food in the modern era is stuffed full of sugar that rapes your teeth
It's not that hard to brush your teeth before bed. It takes like 2 minutes and you can just watch a video or some shit on your phone while you do it.

I did this, ended up having to replace almost all my teeth with titanium crowns, I'm so fucking glad I live in a country where most of it got covered by healthcare, would've been nearly $20k from my own pocket if not.

so uh your teeths beyond fucked or what

you should spend at least 20 seconds on each part of your teeth user
that's twelve in total
front uppers, left upper back teeth, right upper back teeth, front and back
front lowers, left lower back teeth, right lower back teeth, front and back
be sure to swill with water after and then use mouthwash, since doing it in reverse removes any helpful properties the mouthwash would have had
flossing before is ideal, water flossers are awful and you shouldn't fall for the meme, as are sonic toothbrushes - electric ones are okay

For me, it is thrillers.

Being startled isn’t being scared faggot. My alarm on my phone going off when I wasn’t expecting it is just as ‘scary’ as your fucking jump scares. Not horror.

Horror is a theme, not a genre

Hey, you have titanium teeth now. That's a plus in my book.

I want to be scared, not have a fucking heart attack. I get scared much more easily than most people, and if a game has to bait me into being scared, then it's not fucking worth it. I'm perfectly fine of experiencing a cool spooky experience, I don't need to be startled for that, it just detracts from the experience.

You completely missed the point dipshit.
Well done.
Literally said horror isn't about being scared, scares are 1 tool and 1 type of horror concept.
Gore isn't scary but it IS horror.
Utterly wrong.

You guys are doing good today.

It's cgi, you pussy

and?

Is being able to live poor really worth getting cucked idk

>stitches it back up
uh... what?

It really is not too late to start. This goes for anyone reading this too. Swallow your pride and go to the dentist. If you're lucky the damage isn't enough that you need root canals and you need to go reguarly to hold back gum disease. I regret every day I delayed.

Half Life: Alyx made me realize that.
I was almost ready to skip it, because bodyhorror, slimy aliens and pretty much everything scary in Half-Life is kind of my horror thingy.

But somehow they made it work just fine, didn't put any pointless jumpscares in and I was able to go through the game with no issues whatsoever.

>have a wisdom tooth in my mouth right now probably rotting away because it is hard to reach
>can't go to dentist because parents insurance is fucked up right now
Luckily I also don't have to talk to anyone and force them to smell my breath.

Define horror

nope

slow-burn atmospheric character-driven horror

You're not too far off, but there's a better way to put it. The simple fact is that horror is a genre, regardless of the medium. There are a number of criteria that qualifies something as being part of the horror genre, panic induced fear and startling terror aren't necessarily essential. A simple sense of unease or foreboding can work, even disgust and revulsion is a perfectly acceptable tool of the genre.

and you're a pussy

You'd prefer to just leave a hole there?

what if your teeth were naturally flaccid and got hard whenever you're hungry

That's what they did when I got my wisdom teeth out I'm pretty sure. They stuck some gauze in there and I had to change it regularly.

i prefer reentry burn, high atmospheric, oxygen-driven myself

Kek

What the fuck. Why indeed?

>Utterly wrong.
No I'm not, faggot. Video game genres are not book genres you absolute fucking idiot. A video game genre defines HOW IT PLAYS. First person shooter, platformer, turn-based role playing game.

I dont understand retards that say this. "Scary" does not exclusively mean bombastic climactic "scares". A thick, ceaseless atmosphere of dread and unease i.e Silent Hill is still scary.

so happy that i'm a mutant and i've got only one

>They can be disturbing, gory or just unsettling.
They don't even need this. They just need the player character to be legitimately scared for most of the game.

I don't think cavemen had problems with their teeth, it wasn't until agriculture that oral hygiene became a problem. The caveman diet didn't sustain the acid producing bacteria that fuck up your teeth.

and?

Are people really scared of this, I got mine out and while it hurt like a bitch for a few days, I don’t like imagining what would have happened if they weren’t removed, because it was already hurting a bit before the surgery.

Losing teeth always scared me since I was a kid. We should be having teeth from cartilage like sharks. Weaker but replacable.

I agree with almost everything you said OP, except for the gore part. Gore is only unsettling for the first few times, and only if it's done exceptionally well. After a while you get used to it. A good horror game should constantly be changing things up, throwing new disturbing, unsettling, or frightening visuals at you.

Christ, I need to hurry up and get that dental surgery.

i didn't get my wisdom teeth removed yet and i just turned 18 i honestly hope i don't fucking have to after watching that

Attached: 1569378159225.png (111x111, 2.58K)

People saying this is bad are fortunate. Dental nightmares from watching surgery videos stay with you for a long time.

You’re asleep the entire time, don’t worry

Thank god i didn't watch that video before gatting this surgery, ignorance truly is bliss

it's really not bad, they numb the fuck out of your mouth/jaw. i don't remember anything but a mild pressure during one part of the procedure when i became ever so slightly conscious.

What is wrong with you idiots? Take care of your teeth. It is the most beneficial thing to do with your body and the least amount of effort. Now you got the mouth of a crack head and a stomach full of the sick puss discharged from your thrashed gums.

The real pity here is that every society at anytime had tooth care. For the longest time they would just take abrasive dust substances and rub it on their teeth with their fingers or pick their teeth with sticks.

That makes you stupider then shit-cart Carl, shit-cart pusher of 600AD.

>tfw had mine removed last month after my dentist told me it's rotting
>tfw had the area numbed and felt zero pain but the could still feel the presence in my mouth when they were literally ripping the gum apart to try and forcefully pull out the tooth
>the "oh damn" from the dentist as she tells the other dentist that it's falling apart and they need bigger tools
>mfw

wait what the fuck? I always hear about this wisdom teeth bullshit, I never had anything removed and I'm 27, my teeth look fine and nothing weird has happened, what's going on?

Attached: 4354453543453.png (702x586, 235.26K)

Shark teeth aren't made of cartilage. I thought it was the one part of them that isn't degradable.

While I didn't feel anything, I could still hear the sound of the cutting, drilling and breaking, and also the rumbling stomach of the doctor as he hadn't have his lunch yet.
Oh and when the numbness finally started to wear of I had this immense pain and I was only allowed to use a very specific pain killer as the other painkillers where blood tilling. My cheek was blue and swollen for weeks.
The worst part was when the wound got infected because I didn't properly take care of it. They had to cut open the wound and let all the pus out.
Fuck wisdom teeth.

pretty sure my great grandfather died cause of a tooth infection that 'shot up to his brain'
then again that was quite a while ago.

you're one of the lucky ones then. mine haven't caused any pain growing in so im comfy

Like 90% of wisdom teeth removal isn't necessary and is just done as a precaution. I'm 28 and have zero problems with my wisdom teeth.

There's a reason Dentists make a fuck load of money because there's a lot of unnecessary procedures they do "just to be safe".

You could always wind up like Roger Ebert.

Post teeth

Don't bullshit people. They never put you to sleep for any oral surgery.

My teeth are already crooked and fucked from shit genetics and no money to fix that, so it doesn't really bother me that they aren't perfectly white either.

This is what I expect from threads like these, thank you.

I woke up during mine, just long enough to hear the drill, hear the doctor go “oop, he woke up, hold on” then I went right back to sleep.
