Not inherently - as soon as you go off the beaten path of AAA titles a lot of soulful games are available even if they have quirks or jank that prevent them from being a true 9 or 10/10 game.

Unironically yes. Death Stranding isn't perfect but it has a lot of soul. There's a lot of things I really liked about it, and I'm glad I finished it by virtue of the fact that it was a wholly unique experience.

It's got soul, doesn't mean it's good. Death Stranding is very interesting, but also very boring. It has a lot of cool ideas, but the actual gameplay is a slog. Basically it's a flawed look into what could have been.

Wrong. The most seen use is for remasters and remakes of the same fucking things we've seen already, especially this generations plague of rereleases and remakes, but down worse or completely missing the marks in some places.
Soulless, because the passion that originally brought the projects together are gone and are replaced with just shitting out something people will buy from name alone.

Obviously there's still great new games coming out. That's why soul/soulless is primarily only used for remakes, sequels, and spiritual successors where more often than not the original or earlier game is obviously better. Spergs keep reading far too deep into fucking memes.

Actually, there's not that much soulless old stuff. The only stuff over 15 years old that I can say is really lacking in soul is crunk music like Lil Jon and terrible kid's movies like The Cat in the Hat.
Most old stuff is soulful, even the bad stuff.

It would soul if it was a book or a movie. The problem is that it's a video game. The video game element is a walking simulator which is used to deliver the story that should have been in a book or a movie. It's difficult to applaud a walking simulator for having original and creative gameplay.

There are tons of old games that are soulless - you just don't remember them because they are shit. My go-to genre for defining this is racing games because as a genre it is mechanically simple but difficult to get right. There are so, so many soulless racing games it is truly shocking how many of them exist on the PS1 for example. Nobody remembers newman haas racing or andretti racing for example but people remember ridge racer.
