I use pretty 1 to 5 normally for the weapons, but

I also bound Dash to Z, 'nades and Ice Bomb to G, switch them with Left CTRL.
They might not be the best but it's what I find most optimal.

A lot of other people do use ESDF to get more room for other guns, maybe that works better.

Gonna be honest with you famalam: Quake was never good. It had a bit of novelty due to being the first complete 3D first person shooter, but otherwise it brought nothing new to the table. In many ways, it was even a downgrade: fewer weapons, worse level design, laughable enemy designs that lacked Doom's cartoonish charm. Other than 3D and Trent Reznor's ambient soundtrack, it had nothing going for it. Only with Quake 2 things started to get fun.
