Not once have I bought a game past 2010 that lived up to its promises. Developers lie, cheat, obfuscate, shill, and scam without limit. Many developers are also filled with rabid SJW's and Marxists who would gladly cut my throat if they could get away with it, for being a white, heterosexual man. I do not support scammers, or my sworn enemies with my money.

I'm highly uninterested in most games. If I am then I'll buy it but if it looks like something I'd maybe try for a bit then leave it alone (e.g. Frostpunk) then I'd download it.
A big factor too is multiplayer. If there's some cool multiplayer aspect then I'll definitely buy.
There are times though where I'll buy to support a decision. I bought FFXV because I wanted them to keep bringing FF games to PC. There are also times where I pirate one game then buy the sequel because I liked it. I'd also buy the original to gift if there's a great sale on it.
