doom 1 had high health enemies. cacos, pinkies, barons, all tedious as hell to take down without the SSG

The chaingun dealt with caodemons and pinkies really easily and the rocket launcher could deal with all them in a flash easily
The rocket launcher had lower ammo to compensate for its damage but the super shotgun deals practically the same damage without the ammo restriction

It's not that they're hard, they take a long time to kill, making the game slower paced
Being able to kill less threatening enemies faster makes Doom more fun, but it also makes the pump shotgun and the chaingun underpowered

Romero barely worked on Doom 2, he was too busy trying to be a gaming rockstar

chaingun is the best when dealing with lots of low health enemies, the SSG having to reload after every shot takes more time, it can also be less ammo-efficient

Brutal Doom does a good job buffing the pump shotgun and chaingun while slightly nerfing the SSG making the weapons more rounded

1000+ hours on doom 1 and 2 here. Doom 1 levels are amazing but is right, some sections feel like an absolute chore because of HP sponges monsters. Not entirely the fault of the shotgun tho, this could have been adressed by just reducing the number of high hp monsters in tight areas. desu infighting helps a lot but once again you need to have kind of a big open area to take advantage of it. In this regard Doom 2 had way more fun open areas than Doom 1. The suburbs is a good example of that.

I don't think I've ever had as much fun as I did playing DOOM2 Level 1 at a lan party.

Level 7 is also good but better for 1vs1 matches.

Chocolate doom for absolute vanilla.
I use zandronom for everything and zdoom on my old computers. I also used chocolate doom a lot in highschool because it was super simple to setup deatmatches.

Anyway i've been using GZDoom with vanilla like settings for most things and switch to PrBoom+ if I want to play memes like nuts.wad and 100.000 revenants that don't run well in GZDoom
