FES is more definitive than P3P because of its presentation and post game story.
The gameplay tweets and addtion of girl MC doesn't make up for the terrible VN style of cutscenes of the PSP.

Also I play Persona 4 and Persona 5 with allies all set on AI because I think that's how the developers wanted you to play the game. Direct controls were probably added because of the stupid AI in vanillia P3, FES improved it a bit.

It was indeed a nice challenge to use the command/strategy function to assign different tasks to your party. The game is way to easy with direct commands and one of the funniest moments in the game is when you get the setup for the odin/reaper cheese right.

He actually has goals and motives beyond "we gotta beat this totally bad guy dude!!1", has a unique backstory and personality AND wears a cool hat.

This is true though. Lack of party control was a design element meant to portray the autonomy of each character. It synergizes with the way you have to talk with them to change equipment and how they all have their own lives/schedules and will skip out on Tartarus if it doesn't fit their schedule. This was all removed in the games that followed. Perhaps it makes for better gameplay but it's objectively less SOUL
