i'm fucking sick of opfor being so overrated
i grew out of thinking it was the best when i started understanding level design
It can't be anymore overrated than most of the Half Life series. I think Opposing Force holds up better than Half Life 2 in categories that isn't level design. It's Half Life 1+.
It's like 3 hours long
Even if it's like the best 3 hours ever (it's not) I don't understand why this glorified demo is so widely lauded
I remember playing it as a kid but not much else. I thought the lambda sign was interesting. Such science. Much wow.
How is it a glorified demo? Uplink is a glorified demo. Sure it may be 3 hours but that's pretty sizable considering Half Life is roughly 8 hours.
replayed for the first time in ages and honestly wasn't as impressed with it as i was before.
could've been longer, and some of the enemies could've been less spongey. cool weapons introduced, and i'm hoping that opfor/bs remake will be good.
Nah. It's just a "good example" of "expansion pack". New assets / enemies just added the spice that's all.
>opfor/bs remake will be good
Huh? In the same manner as Black Mesa?
Also I will never forget how they sworn it would be for free.
>Huh? In the same manner as Black Mesa?
moddb.com
Yep, same as black mesa being stuck in "valve time"
>Also I will never forget how they sworn it would be for free.
I mean, the 2012 mod is still free. Anything is free if you look in the right places ;)
>moddb.com
Neat.
>the 2012 mod is still free
Huh. So they "forked" the project to premium one, while free version was finalized?
uplink is an actual demo where blue shift is the glorified demo and decay is a meme.
>randy
what?
This faggot
Opfor was peak gearbox, after that it started going downhill
OpFor is overrated as fuck and replaying the series in a row just confirms this
The fact GearBox decided to rip off the game for a fucking decade with the Brothers in Arms games and even Aliens Colonial Marines until they got lucky with Borderlands just shows how fucking creatively bankrupt they always were.
What a quality contribution to the thread. Thanks man.
>So they "forked" the project to premium one, while free version was finalized?
The free mod was mostly done but certain chapters were reduced such as On a Rail and Surface Tension. Xen was completely omitted. The premium game was basically a overhaul of the mod. It extended the reduced chapters. Gave all mod chapters extra make-up and has a complete redo of Xen. The Xen chapters aren't really even a remake but more of a reimagining.
>Holds up better than Half Life 2
Jesus fuck, how are the games freely playable for over a month and we still have shit opinions like this
Is this some kind of bizarre meme i just haven't caught up on?
>GearBox decided to rip off the game for a fucking decade with the Brothers in Arms games
Not sure if I follow with this train of thought.
>certain chapters were reduced such as On a Rail and Surface Tension
Fuck. I played it back then and how did I not notice that? I got the impression that it was pretty 1:1 recreation still though.
Anywyay, did they fix the AI problem with "zero time" reaction for HECU grunts? Shit's was unplayable without certain console commands.
>reimagining
Considering the retail release of Black Mesa is officially endorsed and licensed by Valve, it pretty much overwrites the original Half Life for canonicity.
Well on a pure gameplay level Opposing Force (and by extension Half Life 1) has more weapons and more enemies while not having as many technology showcases that slow the gameplay down. As a run and gun Opposing Force is better than Half Life 2.
>How in gods name did Randy make one of the best Half Life games?
Why is this such a pervasive meme?
it's terrible man
nothing has a rhyme or purpose in it
>did they fix the AI problem with "zero time" reaction for HECU grunts?
Not really, It is noticeably better in Retail but the HECU still pull bullshit from time to time.
I'm not sure about that, Alyx shows quite a different interpretation of the Xen habitat. It doesn't seem as lush as Black Mesa.
Am I the only one pissed that Half Life: Alyx didn't have Mr. Friendly instead of Jeff?
In other "FUCKING RANDY" news:
No, what makes you think it should be Mr. Friendly instead. Being raped in VR doesn't sound fun.
I hate this guy with a passion.
It'd have been a lot more unknown and terrifying than something bipedal and near-human, in my opinion, and the Impending Rape could've been cut down to allusions or just never properly imparted in favour of dying before it can ever happen.
It's amazing to me that Gearbox is even alive still after Aliens Colonial Marines and "Duke Nukem Forever".
>some employees are claiming that the company is withholding the bonuses they were promised when production began
>some employees
Literally a weasel words.
>withholding the bonuses they were promised when production began
Oh look, just like EVERY OTHER COMPANY tend to promise. Ever heard of having A SIGNED PAPER so it makes an obligation for your boss? Also, stakeholders >>> employers
God. The game devs are so fucking entitled, elitists, oblivious manchilds.
Fan remakes are in development from what I can remember.
The weapons and enemies could literally all be copypasted with their original counterparts and you wouldn't notice a difference.
They might as well be recolors of base game equipment until the very end, when you get the Barnacle that kills you when used as an actual weapon.
The level design is fucking hilarious and breaks any kind of immersive feel the original game had. Explosive barrels stored right next to the chambers that shoot fire, water puzzles that don't work? even though every other instance of water with an electric wire in it kills you, when Gearbox does it it's for decoration.
OpForce's story contributions include the first ever instance of G-Man physically, directly helping the player by hitting switches to save some random army fuck's life, which just feels lazy, and Fat guards that talk about donuts and grab electric fences for cheap giggles.
I think the team elements slow the game more than anything in Half Life 2, and i'm literally replaying through the games right now.
Not to mention all the waiting you actually DO in opposing forces. Are we forgetting the parts where you literally sit and wait for the room to blow up around you, or sit and wait for robots to move blocks?
I sure as hell don't have to deal with teammates that run directly into turrets in HL2, or the god awful controls of the section where you aim explosives at a barricaded door.
How many times are they going to fuck people out of money and get away with it? Is this the power of the console audience?
Fugg. I meant stakeholders >>> employees
>Whatever the legal fallout that results from this controversy, there’s no denying Pitchford’s rocky recent past. In 2016, Pitchford was accused of taking $12 million in bonuses from Gearbox after Pitchford himself accused former Gearbox lawyer Wade Callender of reneging on $300,000. Callender has since provided supposed proof of Pitchford’s accused illicit activity, but the matter has been settled without further inquiry. Pitchford has also been sued by composer Bobby Prince over unpaid royalties for Duke Nukem 3D, and accused of leaving a thumb drive full of porn at theme restaurant Medieval Times.
Imagine literally defending Randy Pitchford.
Funny that they left out the part about the porn featuring underage women.
>accused of leaving a thumb drive full of porn at theme restaurant Medieval Times
I just looked at first paragraph.
>Imagine literally defending Randy Pitchford.
What a strawman. I just mocked the gullible employees who believed for a bonus payment. Story of every corporation and company.
You do realize promises made verbally can be used in court right? Not saying the employees are fucking einstein level big brains but they could potentially sue him and win.
youtu.be
Starts on 17:57
>Story of every corporation and company
they should just take it hahaha, better luck next time suckers i'm so smart
Don't you have anything better to do Randy?
don't forget the convenient portals everywhere
there's literally a fucking navi-like thing that guides you at times
I am not legal guy and don't want to be an armchair specialist.
- My point is that promise on a signed paper is just strong AF. First, this shows if boss has actually balls to make a commitment to his promise and not just words. Secondly it enforces an actual statement i.e. given criteria when a bonus payment will be done with exact numbers. Finally a court material.
- Verbal one is very weasel stuff. I am not sure if this can be degraded to hearsay, instead being an evidence.
One of rare cases where worker union is actually a good thing.
>The weapons and enemies could literally all be copypasted with their original counterparts and you wouldn't notice a difference.
>They might as well be recolors of base game equipment until the very end, when you get the Barnacle that kills you when used as an actual weapon.
What do you mean? The weapons feel diverse enough to be it's own weapon. The sniper rifle definitely has a different feel to the crossbow. The Shock Roach is more direct than the Hivehand. The Barnacle is more of a Proto Gravity Gun in that it's more of a tool than a straight weapon. Plus the M249, Spore Launcher, and Teleport Gun are definitely not reskins of any pre-existing weapon in Half Life 1.
>The level design is fucking hilarious and breaks any kind of immersive feel the original game had. Explosive barrels stored right next to the chambers that shoot fire, water puzzles that don't work? even though every other instance of water with an electric wire in it kills you, when Gearbox does it it's for decoration.
I always viewed it as Black Mesa has already gone to hell. Maybe some monsters moved the explosive barrels around the facility. It's not like explosive barrels make much sense anyways and they for sure don't make sense being littered around City 17.
Part 1 of 2
>OpForce's story contributions include the first ever instance of G-Man physically, directly helping the player by hitting switches to save some random army fuck's life, which just feels lazy.
G-Man clearly has a purpose for Shepherd even if its never explained. Also he clearly fucked Shepherd over by not letting him escape on the aircraft carrier.
>Fat guards that talk about donuts and grab electric fences for cheap giggles.
Well at least we know who ate all the donuts.
>I think the team elements slow the game more than anything in Half Life 2, and i'm literally replaying through the games right now.
I disagree, an engineer opens a door faster than some of the dialog that's exchanged between Gordon and Alyx, Barney, Mossman, Citizens, etc.
>Not to mention all the waiting you actually DO in opposing forces. Are we forgetting the parts where you literally sit and wait for the room to blow up around you, or sit and wait for robots to move blocks?
Again it's faster than a good chunk of parts in HL2. The Black Mesa East chapter is nothing but waiting.
>I sure as hell don't have to deal with teammates that run directly into turrets in HL2
They still get in your way between doors and get mowed down by Combine Soldiers.
>or the god awful controls of the section where you aim explosives at a barricaded door.
It's not much different than the AirStrike part in Half Life 1.
Part 2 of 2
>Maybe some monsters moved the explosive barrels around the facility
>aircraft carrier
That was a fucking tilt-rotor helicopter, you motherfucker.
>Within 5-10 minutes Id, Apogee, Titanfall, Gearbox, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, all have ties to eachother
This is a good video argument for why people complaining "Today's Indie devs are all buddy buddy with eachother" is fucking dumb. That's literally how collaboration works.
>They still get in your way between doors
No, they move out of your way if you walk into them.
This literally does not exist in OF.
played through half life 1 + expansions the other week, my thoughts:
>half life is ok, but overrated. the whole 1st-person narrative aspect is overblown, the story moves way too fast and you just do things without understanding why or how. the game felt too long, gameplay loop became repetitive quickly, started to feel tedious by the end
>opposing force was definitely the most enjoyable. it was just the right length (about half of hl1) and had the best set pieces. never felt repetitive, was constantly tossing new enemies/weapons/encounters at you with puzzle breaks to spread them out. best pacing. marine squads are a dumb gimmick but luckily the game understood this and made them inconsequential to the mission. too many weapons
>blue shift was obviously a rush job. it's half as long as opfor and half of that was time filler. glitchy escort mission. stupid puzzles (had to look up the barrel). the only redeeming factor is the lore expansion and the way it bridges straight to hl2
at least you can skip black mesa east. whenever i play HL2 i just start at route kanal.
also the osprey does blow up if you stick around iirc
The airstrike part in HL1 has you pick literal co-ordinates on a map.
The airstrike part in OF has you aim a cannon with no indication where it's going to land other than basically, luck.
>Bubby is back, bitches!
johnfreemanjohnfreemanjohnfreeman.ytmnd.com
ytmnd is back online
Why not? those Gargantua probably send all sorts of things flying.
I'll give you that, that was a retarded mistake.
I clearly remember being able to push the squad around if it came down to it. I will admit that it's been awhile since I played HL2 but I don't remember the Rebel Citizens being that helpful. I'm not going to defend the squadmates in opposing force much either as they are dumb but they didn't stick around for long.
I mean, I guess you could also skip some of the Opposing Force maps if one really wanted to.
If we're talking HL1 and not Black Mesa it's not much better having to fight the controls on the airstrike than the cannon. Also there's some reference with the cannon having a model that you can see where it aims.
It's mostly overrated here because people have a hateboner for Half-Life and Half-Life 2 after the decade of dick sucking games magazines, reddit and pre-2012 Yas Forums gave it. But people still actually enjoy the games. Give it a few months for this current discourse to filter to reddit, reddit to start cancerously humping it and for the people here to try and deny anything to do with it.
Fucking BASED.
to be fair the squadmates in all of these games mostly end up just being cannon fodder to take fire while you plant headshots
Yeah, the most useful squadmates were always the medics.
Spoken like a true zoomer. HL1 isn't overrated, it's simply a game that set a standard. You'd know this if you were around when it came out. You're used to games with narratives and setpieces and shit. HL1 did all that better than its contemporaries, by miles.
