We're in lockdown, I'm bored and I've never finished SF1. All the more reason to play this wonderful game. Come in. Yesterday's thread () was cut short due to the flooding of the board by Corona threads.
Let's Play Shining Force, Part 2
We're now in Chapter 3 and we've arrived at the mountainside village and now have access to a couple of fliers as worthy addition to the Shining Force. SF veterans, which fliers are good? Right now I'm just using Balbaroy and left Amon in reserve.
We are nearing the location of the infamous Laser Eye.
wasn't here yesterday but I hope your thread doesn't die too soon user
Having obtained the Moon Stone, we can now cure whatshisname's insanity.
We meet a strange fellow that's trying to build a flying contraption.
Thanks, appreciate it.
In true Shining Force style, we can get promoted to Veteran Classes upon reaching level 10 but min-maxing tells us to delay it a bit further.
Time to cure this insane wolf.
...with the awesome power of the Lunar Dew!

Why are you doing this user? You're making me sad
L-lewd.
BTW is Zylo any good as a fighter. Still don't know whether or not to add him into the Force.
Zylo is surprisingly high-level.
Planning and foresight were not my forte, admittedly.
Alright, next battle!
New enemy type, also this map is FUCK HUEG.
Ken kills a Skeleton and levels up! I wonder if you cna make his a pegasus later on.
Man, my Anri is still so low-leveled.
>Sketelon
>Uses Medical Herd to heal
Now hang on just a fucking minute here, game.
FUCK DARK PRIESTS.
As usual it's up to Tao to clean things up. I like how Magic spells NEVER MISS in this game. Unlike
Lizardmen are a lot less strong or scary than initially expected.
[cont.]Unlike Barbaroy.
FUCK SKELETONS TOO
Commencing Birdie Battleā¢. Barbaroy is SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than Pegasus Knights.
Ouch. 8 damage at this level is a lot.
godspeed OP
FLANKED.com
Thanks.
Remember to heal often as it gives your healers EXP.
This game doesn't really explain movement modifiers. Diane, being a furest elf of sorts, can move through forests quickly unlike humans and centaurs.
I'M ON THE EDGE
OF GLORY
And with that the battle ends. Much easier than expected.
The absolute chin on this mofo.

Always found this map nightmare hard as a kid, but it's not at all threatening once you know how to play videogames
OOPSIE
Max died, that chokepoint is pretty severe. One thing I've noticed about Shining Force is that the level-scaling is rather severe. Low-level characters get outclassed so very quickly and starts dealing 1-damage attacks and dying in one hit.
It'll be a surprise to me then, since I have no idea what's going to happen.
Okay, taking a short break. I'll leave it up to fate whether or not this thread survives.
One last thing though: I like how many centaurs there are in the Shining series. You really don't see a lot of centaurs in other Japanese RPG series.
Aaaaand we're back. Retrying the same mission, but this time we're holding back (haha...) a little so that we don't get bumrushed and die at the chokepoint.
The Shining games are probably one of the few series where I really don't mind dying mid-battle since you get to keep your XP, money and items obtained. You just have to restart the battle again. It's neat. Challenging but not punishing.
monitoring this thread, godspeed OP
You may also want to know you seem to have missed a dressup item for Tao then, pretty sure it's in one of the walls in in fact if the game still lets you go back there
Neither of the birdmen are very good but the Laser Eye map is where they're most useful (there's also another hidden item only they can reach in said map if you care), they pretty much completely fall off after then because they need a lot of babying to be anywhere near on par with what the rest of the Force can do
Speaking of babying, Arthur can be far and above the best unit in the game if you put forth the effort into spoonfeeding him exp until level ~20 or so before promoting him, but the game is easy enough that it's not worth the effort
>holding back (haha...)
should've known
either way, good luck OP, the eye is a well-known difficulty spike but once you figure out it can kill enemies for you and use that to your advantage it's a breeze
>nothing happens
What a nothingburger. I'm guessing it was targeting Max but because I moved him out of the way it failed to shoot anything.
I think I did check some of the walls in and found nothing. Oh well, whatever. i honestly don't like consulting a guide too much while playing something for the first time so if I miss one or two secrets, I'm fine.
>they pretty much completely fall off after then
I figured as much. Not every birdie can be Peter the Phoenix in SF2.
>Speaking of babying, Arthur can be far and above the best unit in the game
Heh, I put him in reserve. Dude is the lowest level character in my entire squad, only level 4. I'll leave him for later playthroughs.
BTW thanks for not spoiling too much. Your info was helpful but I do like discovering some stuff on my own.
Thanks.
yoooooo
broooooooooooo
what the fuck?
Haha I'm so glad I wasn't spoiled on this, this is great.
I take this back : >What a nothingburger
Kokichi's all right.
Is it worth it to switch out Kokichi with Balbaroy? Or are they about the same?
Just checked from a playthrough i did a few years ago and i think i can see why you missed it
Still, you're right, it's no major significance, but if you end up egressing or dying again it's a cute addition, especially if you like Tao
The other one in the Laser Eye map is for Anri, and the mages are only as good as you make them so whether they keep up or not is up to how you play
It's sure not the most notorious map in the game for no reason
Pretty sure Kokichi's better. Also there are generally too few good swords to distribute late game which hurts the birdmen more.
IRL stuff, gotta take another break.
>the mages are only as good as you make them so whether they keep up or not is up to how you play
So far I'm really fond of these mages so I'll keep them. My current Force is like
>1 swordsman (Max)
>2 melee fighters
>2 centaurs
>1 birdman
>2 priests
>1 monk
>2 mages
>1 archer
r8 and h8
I think I'll just keep one birdman, might be useful. 2 is far too plenty.
This is why I like a few unarmed fighters on my team, their attack scales pretty well with fighters of relative level. But if you invest a little time ANY character can wreck face though.
In my last playthrough I got everyone to 20 before promoting and was surprised to find characters like Zylo stay top tier.
Yeah, he was almost always in my team. One of my favorites for breaking the game is Bleu. He takes a lot longer to get up to par since he's a flying unit but he's like Peter on crack once you do. That takes a little too long in a casual play through though.
yo OP what are you playing it on? an emulator? I want to try playing it too
It's a shame he arrives so late in the game that guy is a ton of fun if you spend the time with him.
Those two and Domingo are easily the best units in the game, i've never had a run where they don't turn out godlike
i did a playthrough intentionally leaving them out and only using "bad" units like Pelle to see what it'd be like and the game was completely different, but also miles less fun
Your lineup is fine for now, but the only one i urge you not to drop is best girl Khris
It's not like 2 where all your healers can potentially become MMNKs, but Gong is too good of an attacker to keep up heals all by his lonesome so either she or Lowe are often seen getting the boot
Yes, emulator.
I still have Khris. I've got her, Gong and Lowe as my 3 healer units.
I'M BACK
This bitch-ass Laser Eye ain't all that strong once you hit it.
I don't know why the AI has a hateboner for Luke. He's hardly the squishiest character around.
That little shit is practically broken. I love Domingo.
Battle done.
Chapter done.
Laser Eye done and dusted.
Centaurs are awesome and shining force is one of my favorite games ever.
Onwards to Chapter 4.
I'm curious, which type do you prefer, anons? SF1's scenario/chapter structure, or SF2's more open world exploration structure of storytelling?
Good tastes. SF4 never ever ;_;
It's ok when I make my SF spiritual successor with a crafting system we wont need SF4.
you better not be yanking on my pizzle with that claim
I prefer 1 to 2. Part 2 feels spread too thin compared to 1. The world-building and the locales you visit and the NPC interactions are more memorable to me. I also tend to prefer RPGs with less fluff and 1 has better pacing. I understand why 2 is so popular but it never really clicked with me.
Got some ideas I've written down but I'm first working on my megaman/castlevania inspired game. Not yanking your pizzle, post your throwaway and I'll share my ideas with you.
