RPG Thread

I'm downloading Unlimited Saga after an user suggested it the other day and While I wait I was just reading a little about it and I saw its the 9th game in the series apparently? Am I going to be lost in the plot or is this more or less a standalone game? Probably no chance of a thread with april fools shenanigans going on but lets have a thread about RPGs in general

Attached: logo.jpg (1000x794, 370.43K)

Most of the saga games aren’t connected as far as I can recall. Good job making an actual thread and not Yas Forums and reddit tier garbage. I’m thinking about playing final fantasy tactics myself

I've thought about loading up final fantasy tactics but I feel like I know too much about the story to enjoy it. Same kind of feeling with tactics ogre, I was halfway through the game when I lost my data and I just cant bring myself to play through that again to get going.

I'm out of the loop on where to find roms these days so I just fell back on vimms so I've got forever to wait still

I also plan on checking out metal max returns though I was curious if the game has any real story to speak of. Anyone out there a fan of the series?

I want to play tactics ogre but I tried Ogre Battle 64 and it had so many damn systems going on

It was back on the PSP that I was playing tactics ogre and I don't remember it being too hard to get the hang of. That said back then I didn't know the games were in the same series so I wouldn't be able to vouch for if the plots were connected at all.

The only other rpgs I’m working on are divinity original sin 2 and this chink srpg called banner of the maid. I guess bannerlord also counts and this walking dead vr game has rpg elements

Unlimited SaGa may be a bit different and it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I do love the game. Even by SaGa's standards it's the black sheep of the series but there's still something about it that I love.

If OB64 is anything like March of the Black Queen, then yeah I could see that. But Tactics Ogre is a lot simpler. No alignment or charisma, no reputation.

Bannerlord is running strange for me. I have a better PC than my brother or other friends yet it wont run right so I'm just waiting until it gets some updates before trying again. I've been wanting to play a good NEW rpg but I can't get excited for divinity for some reason.

All SaGa games are standalone.
At best you can find a very tenuous connection between the first two if you want to read between the lines of SaGa 1's ending, but even if that were considered canon all of a sudden it still wouldn't mean much.
>I was curious if the game has any real story to speak of.
It does, but Metal Max has a similar approach to narrative as SaGa in general, so do not expect some kind of epic character driven drama.
The story in these games is mostly a framework to contextualize what you're doing in terms of gameplay rather than being an attempt at some grandiose epic, that doesn't mean the story is bad but it's simply not that kind of game you play because you want to see what character X does or have the usual series of twists and dramatic reveals.
The only black sheep in the series is OG SaGa 3, Unlimited's only hated by most of the nonexistent western "fanbase".

it's fucking awful

Yeah the whole alignment shit and units having units seemed complicated. I’m sure I’d enjoy it but I would need time to really understand it all

Bannerlord is just buggy atm, I’m running a 2080s with an i9 and it still stutters, it’s basically just a better warband atm. DOS2 is pretty cool imo since it’s almost like what I’d imagine an immersive sim isometric rpg would be like

Is there any story progression for the main character at least? Id like something that feels like hes more than a blank slate though the game looks interesting regardless

>Is there any story progression for the main character at least?
As in the Hunter character?
No, but your dad stops being a dick by the end of the game.
If you want him to be something of an actual character, you can play Metal Saga since in that continuity you play as the kids of the MM1 cast and see how they grow up to be like.
It's pretty fucking not canon to the main series though.

Units having units is simple enough. It's just a squad of units who move as one.

Not a big fan of Saga. I liked TLR and that is pretty much it.

I see, well the game still seems good but im going to try saga first. Im not even sure how unlimited saga is for story but we'll see whenever this DSL level download finishes.

Ive been having no luck finding a modern jrpg with the type of tone a lot of ps1 and 2 rpgs had so if you know a good one I'd love to hear about it

Meant to reply to

All I'm seeing for TLR is the last remnant, is that what you are talking about?

Touhou Soujinengi V: The Genius of Sappherios, the best JRPG on Switch exists thanks to SaGa, so I'll always be thankful to Kawazu.

Yeah.

Story in Unlimited follows the Romancing model of different MCs with their self contained scenarios sharing the same world and setting.
You have your MC's story and the world lore being more or less a separate thing, each MC meets with another MCs or characters that appear in other MCs' stories with the exception of Ruby's scenario, which is the lore rich scenario and the only one where you get to play as Iskandar.
To give you a general idea:
>Vent
Mostly self contained personal story, ties into Mythe's story a bit and deals with dragons and the undeads.
>Laura
Mostly self contained, deals with the political intrigue regarding the fall of Escata and the royal family, only scenario where you get all the elemental tribes reps too.
>Ruby
Mostly main lore related, focused on the Seven Wonders and the main "big bad" of the story, also the only scenario where you get to know Iskandar
>Judy
Almost completely self contained, cute story, you get some interesting lore snippets about the nature of magic tablets and the ultimate magic, only scenario where you get to play with all of Judy's family members
>Kurt/Cash
Completely self contained, ties a bit into Michelle's own story and the mystery of the gauntlet, fairly character driven.
>Armic
Completely self contained, expands on the Chapa tribe and the last of the three big dick magicians in the game, Yun Crimsonrain
>Mythe
Almost completely self contained, has a bit of everything from other stories, female only party gimmick, deals a bit with Iskandar and the arcanians near the tail end of the story.
TLR is an unofficial SaGa game.

TLR is fucking great. You should play SaGa Frontier 2 if you haven't already.

I started Romancing 3 recently, jsut to see how it plays. I have no intentions of playing it until I've finished RE3 and FF7 and I'll probably restart the game. (it's not like I will lose something important; only played it for 2 hours)
My stupid question is, when I finally get the ship, and that's pretty much 1 hour into the game, can I go into towns in any order and do side quests for my (new) party member as long as I want, or do I NEED to follow the specific route? Sorry for stupid question. TLR and RS2 also had that ''thing'' - you go from location A to location B, talk to people, they tell you about location C and even though you wanted to go back to location A you go to C etc.

>can I go into towns in any order and do side quests for my (new) party member as long as I want
As long as you have the money to get there, sure, once you get to Pidona you're free to go anywhere in that list as long as you can pay the ticket, there's no "secret" location that you cannot access.

Never knew they were connected. I had always considered playing tlr though I see it got delisted because of a remaster that didn't come to pc because whatever reason. If I can find the original is that fine or does the remaster do anything important?

Also reminds me of seiken densetsu 3s approach to characters a little. The game just finished downloading so im going to open it up on the other screen

>I'm downloading Unlimited Saga after an user suggested it
lol, trolled

The remaster fucks up a couple of mechanics and makes them worse, get a torrent of the PC version.
>Also reminds me of seiken densetsu 3s approach to characters a little
That's because SD3 was inspired by SaGa on that and they're more or less sister series due to the directors being close friends.
SD and SaGa also often shared key staff and have cameos or references to each other, SaGa Frontier for instance has Rabites while Legend of Mana uses several SaGa techs and it has cross save contents with SaGa Frontier 2.

Thats pretty cool. If I really like unlimited will it ruin the earlier games in the series for me?

No, why would it?
All of the games in the series are pretty different and do different things, admittedly that's both a strength and a weakness.
SaGa Frontier and SaGa Frontier 2 have pretty much nothing in common with each other outside of some core rules for the battle system for instance.

Nice, thanks.

I’m considering Pathfinder Kingmaker and Tyranny. Are they good ?

Just was worried that maybe newer mechanics could make the older games seem boring. Its generally not a problem for me but as much as there is in these games it seemed worth asking

Could be the case, but pretty much all titles still have several stand alone core mechanics that aren't featured anywhere else, or other general designs in terms of progression, that helps keep every game still fresh despite the core ruleset getting bigger and more elaborated with each game.
The only exception I can think of is Minstrel Song since it's explicitly made as a compilation of several mechanics from the games before that, but even there you still won't see everything the series has to offer.

Looking forward to Xenoblade DE. Hopefully the new content isn't like 5 hours at most

Since you guys are talking about SaGa, is Scarlet Grace any good? Also why is Romancing 3 that expensive on steam?

I've only played RS2 and 3, and Scarlett Grace, and I love SG far more than the other two. I like the streamlining, because I really didn't like the aimless wandering RS3 had.

Thanks, I'll give it a try plus it helps the developers who could make a new game.

SaGa Frontier 1 and 2 are both excellent so give them a shot. The first one is still one of my favorite jrpgs to this very day.

who here has a huge backlog of rpg now and doesn't know what to play first

SG is an excellent game, but fairly different from most things around, if you don't mind it being almost entirely battle and story/decision focused, you're probably going to enjoy it a lot.
Mind you that there's literally zero cities or dungeons to explore though.

I got One step from Eden, Bannerlord, P5R, and soon FF7R on my plate.

Playing soul nomad right now, somewhat underwhelming considering Nippon ichis other projects, but still a fun twist to it, if not a thing of its time and a step to current nis standards...

There's some characters which are really basic, but overall the game is fine

Been thinking about getting One Way Heroics because of those couple of threads a few days ago. Looks kinda interesting.

It's a pretty novel take on roguelikes. for sure.
I personally don't like it very much though, mostly because I like to take my time to explore in rogue/roguelikes and OWH is the exact opposite of that.

holy shit first thing that happens starting as Kurt and I he gets disowned by his father. the peaceful music didn't have me expecting that

Fun stuff, isn't it? The music is more of a theme for the MC's personality, which is why Kurt's theme is so soothing and calm while Laura's theme is more dramatic and emotional.
Kurt's scenario is not good for newcomers though, you'd be better off starting with Vent or Ruby.
Kurt, Armic and Mythe's stories are all harder scenarios meant for more experienced players.

I picked it when you(?) mentioned it was very character driven. The idea of playing a character in his 30s as opposed to those younger characters also seemed neat. Also Vents voice made me feel like I wouldn't like him.

Ah, it seems im stuck with him anyways on kurts route.

Yeah, I said that and you should do that if playing as Kurt is appealing to you, but you still should be aware that Kurt's scenario will probably be very frustrating because it's one of the harder and trickier scenarios due to the Gauntlet mechanics and other factors such as Kurt himself being pretty bad gameplay wise.
If you want another mature character with strong personality and involvement in the general story, I suggest you play Laura's story, she's a great character and her scenario is much easier to deal with than Kurt's.
All SaGas with multiple MCs have mature/adult MCs you can play as too, so keep that in mind if you're interested in play through the series.

Thank you I'll keep that in mind. I'm going to try Kurts just because this introduction has me really interested, but if It gets too frustrating I'll try hers out.

>The remaster fucks up a couple of mechanics and makes them worse
other user here, hold up - can you tell me more? I do have both the steam version and the one on switch to choose from.

I'll give you a small explanation of how the Gauntlet works without spoiling anything so that you can at least know what you're dealing with:
Kurt is one of the two characters in the game that is cursed with a Gauntlet, the other one being Michelle, which you'll meet if you play a couple of other MCs' scenarios.
The Gauntlet is a cursed artifact that, in gameplay terms, takes the form of a cursed panel in Kurt's Panel grid, it takes the central slot and CANNOT be removed by any mean, if Kurt is your MC however, winning Gauntlet battles will eventually upgrade your Gauntlet panel automatically up to L5, which kind of makes it less offensive to deal with.
Now, outside of character building, what the Gauntlet does is put Kurt into a pocket dimension where he has to fight special Gauntlet battles against several bosses, the later ones being very hard to deal with since they test how much you know about the game and how much you can deal with Kurt being a subpar character.
The most dangerous thing about these Gauntlet battles is that the Gauntlet itself works on a timer, a 15 minute timer iirc, when the time is up, Kurt will have to fight a battle, alone, in the Gauntlet's pocket dimension.
Now, for the good news:
It doesn't matter if you lose the battles as they will keep repeating until you either finish the game by beating the last boss or beat all of them, so you can also choose to "ignore" them and let Kurt be defeated if you want, you'll also keep whatever new techs you learn through these battles.

The bad news:
If you don't complete all of the gauntlet battles you won't see Kurt's alternate ending, moreover, a certain story quest will be a lot harder to the point of being virtually unbeatable if you didn't keep some save files before you get there, I'm not saying you're guaranteed a lockdown into an unbeatable state, but for a total newcomer it's very likely you'll have problems if you don't keep emergency saves (which you should do regardless).

Attached: DDv7iPLUIAAfGiN.jpg (1200x1149, 131.55K)

Also forgot a very important thing about the timer:
It measure time in real time, that is the timer keeps going down at all times, even when you're not on a quest or inside a menu, if you played Wizardry IV you might understand why this is a very important thing.
The Remaster uniforms a lot of AoE skills to be generic All Target skills instead of being based on hitboxes, which fucks up the balance of the original game a lot.
It also reportedly shifts the BR growth back to the 360 standards.

Unlimited Saga is basically a weird take on a tabletop RPG with an asshole GM. Every single chest is trapped in like three different ways.

>Find a chest
>Oh wait it's locked
>Lockpick it
>Oh wait it also has a magic lock
>Cast spell on it
>Open it
>It shoots needles at me
>Then exhales poison gas
>It also explodes
>Then turns into a mimic
>Get into fight
>Kill mimic
>Get fuckall because the content exploded
>Take a single step forward
>Ceiling spikes trap because why the fuck not
>Also a bunch of enemies gang up on me because they sniffed me from three sectors beyond

Test

Think this is the JRPG thread but Pathfinder Kingmaker is fuckin fantastic

honestly at this point its solid video game discussion this board doesn't see often enough so I welcome it

Bump for a good thread.

Bump

I wanted to like Scarlet Grace, but I feel like there might be too much content. Like, I understand SaGa games are all about those side quests, but never felt so unengaged like I am with the content in SG

Attached: teeh.jpg (474x267, 19.97K)

is there a way to account for and know the risk of getting a combo interrupted? As far as I can tell it seems pretty random with 3 attacks in a row getting stopped at the first attack
