Not sure yet. They don't actually meet for the first time until the boat to Costa del Sol, but the remake has been changing things, so it might actually be Sephiroth reaching out to him through Jenova.

the remake is self aware that its a remake. Sephiroth/watchmen of fate know what it is gonna happen, we dont know how.
The current theory is that sephiroth is aware that the OG game has happened multiple times, and this is just one of those "multiple times", but looking to change it so he wins. Thats why hes teasing cloud with all this shit so cloud thinks has a chance.

But nothing will change in the end, which causes cloud to go in a mental breakdown.

No its not. It have a shitfest action combat, Sephiroth is shoved in every other cutscene for no reason and its only disc1 midgar, which is like 10% of the original game. The great thing about FFVII was the world exploration, without it will be garbage.

At this rate they are doing it in a way that remake isnt the same as OG. I think its fine, they clearly want people to separate both games stories. If the remake story is bad, then for me not a big deal since it isn meant to replace the OG.
