My friend thinks Project+ is going to dominate the Smash scene within a few years, but I'm pretty skeptical. It got me wondering: how many popular games are there that started as community mods? Is there any precedent of user mods outpacing the popularity of actual games in the same series?

P+ is fantastic, but your friend is an idiot.
Of course it won't.
The average person will just play the latest game.
Melee autists will continue to play Melee.
Which Melee autists?
There is no way that this shit ain't getting banned by gimr in 2022.
Also this mod isn't that good, just play melee or ultimate but not this travesty
Its unironically too complicated for the average Nintendofag to just get ( Not get into, just get ) and it doesn't hold the interest of other demographics that much.
Plenty of melee autists are playing P+, especially since tournies are shut down and there isn't a reason to grind melee all day.
In what way would it 'dominate' the Smash scene? Like maybe I could see it replace Project M as some point, maybe. But it's not like it's gonna become more popular than Ultimate or Melee any time soon here.
He thinks it will beat out Ultimate in players before all the DLC are released (lol)
>Like maybe I could see it replace Project M as some point, maybe
It already has even before the latest update. Now it's P+ fags and Cobalt shitters.
I mean I know the goal is for it to be the next step for Project M, but is it really more popular with Smash players than Project M is at this point?
They share the exact same base of players, everyone who was playing PM is now playing P+. I haven't heard of anyone who insists on using the older mod
Counter Strike and Dota both started as mods and became bigger than the games they were based on.
I still see clips and stuff get posted from Project M in the Smash Bros subreddit fairly often, don't see much of anything from Project+. Like I'm sure its catching on, but watching those projects from a distance, it seems to me that Project M is still more popular.
Killing Floor and Day Z were both mods to begin with too.
Rising Storm and Mount and Blade Napoleonic Wars both started as mods and became the most popular multiplayer modes of their respective games, with RS getting a sequel
P+ will never be updated, nor will they ever add new characters. For that reason I think it's highly unlikely that it will have any staying power
Most people are trying to port P+'s stuff to PM.
because CS and DOTA didn't rely on existing IP. They can work as standalone games. If you make a standalone smash, you just get rivals of aether, sony battle royale, etc. The appeal of smash isn't the game, it's the characters. It's not even possible to rip off smash
>The appeal of smash isn't the game, it's the characters. It's not even possible to rip off smash
What is Super Smash Flash?
a game that has the same characters
But it's a rip off smash.
ROA is a very good game that stands on its own merits
I don't think you have a friend. Enjoy your mod.
Really? I'm curious, anything you can link to?
it's also a literal who that only 2 people play
It's not a big game but it's a very good game, since when does popularity determine quality?
Rivals of Aether and Slap City are both great games in terms of gameplay and, in some ways, are much more enjoyable than Smash Bros.
The idea that the appeal of smash is the characters, not the game, is the problem with much of the smash community, particularly the threads here.
Remix's discord mentioned it. Nothing set in stone but things are being worked on. I'd say keep an eye on any packs on Brawl Vault and see if P+'s content is present.
Did PM even go anywhere? Every Smashfag loved it, but few actually competed due to it being an unofficial mod
PM was on it's way until the drama and fake C&D blew it out the map. Now it's getting more popular again thanks to P+ and a few melee and ult pros making videos and/or streaming about it.
It won't happen tournament wise, streaming wise I can see it performing well for some time, melee players will probably be part of the streaming community but when things get back to normal and tournaments start happening again they will concentrate in their game and new players will just play either ultimate (because it's the latest game and they would also have to learn many things that will be unnecessary for future installments) or melee because of its well known appeal
>Remix's discord
those guys that leaked dark samus and bomberman, and somehow got away with it?
read the discussion. it was never about quality, it's about whether the game can succeed or in OP's words
>dominate the Smash scene
like how CS, DOTA, DayZ, etc came to dominate their genres. Smash mods can't replicate that success because Smash doesn't work without the IPs and of course anything that uses the IPs gets murdered quickly. Super Smash Flash is the only exception I guess since it's just a janky fanwork flash game with Dragonball characters and shit.
That was fake, someone else on another Smash discord did the leaks.
And Bomberman is technically already released if you know where to look.
can somebody give a brainlet level guide to downloading and installing this. I have a wii and I know I need an SD card too at some point.
The virgin P+
The chad Smash Remix
Yeah except Bringo gave the files out carelessly to Remix staff and they capitalized on it knowing Bringo wouldn't throw himself under the bus just to expose them. It was the perfect coverup story that Trevor was going for CBM moderator and wouldn't dare be involved with leaks right?
just play on peecee, no point in playing on wii unless you're bringing it to a local or do not have a computer
Install the homebrew channel and then go here
projectplusgame.com
It's really fucking easy
>download P+ from their website; download the Lite version if you have a 2GB card
>put the files from the download on the root of the SD card
>turn on Brawl
>put in SD card
>go to Custom Stages
Congrats
How can I play this on wii?is it possible? I have it on my pc and it runs fine and everything but I wanted to know if there was some way I could run this on a console
No promises here, but there are utilities that convert .n64/.z64 files to virtual console .wad files which install to the home menu. There is an official virtual console release of SSB64 for Wii so theoretically it would work
Forgotten Empires is the current dev of Age of Empires 2. They started as some modders who made a full unofficial expansion, then Microsoft hired them for AoE2HD and their expansion became official. Now they are working on AoE2DE and they are doing a pretty good job at not destroying a 20 year old game
Well now.
Nintendo not allowing to be streamed or played at any events they "sponsored" didnt help
>fake
Yeah, sure
Rayman is coming soon
What's the point of all these new characters if they all feel like shit? If I want to play something goofy I'd prefer Brawl-
You friend has difficulties seeing beyond themselves. That aside, Project+ is neat and all, but man all forms of P:M have silly advantage where characters can whiff an entire move and still have enough time to do another and continue their string. You know what the best Smash mod is? Smash Remix.
I admit I was bullshitting, what really happened with that leak?
refer to it adds up when you think about how easy it was to deflect the heat like it was planned
I see.
Anything else coming? I see you guys updated Isaac, he's fun.
using brawlbuilder is there anyway to get a playable raichu that has decent mechanics?
the guy i get my info from says theres supposedly rayman, bomberman, and a shantae being worked on
Exclusive to Remix or just standalone mods?
in remix development
Cool.
Good luck on those mods.
Wowee, 400 whole matches per day?
>janky shit "rebalance" of PM BUT HERP WE ADD LE NUKLES TOO ROFLCOPTER
>stages and costumes are mostly just swiped from Brawl Vault or Legacy, with horrendous consistency in both regards
>the few new stages they did make are absolutely low effort garbage and play like crap too
It gives me solace that this won't last terribly long as a "standard".
Man, fuck Bringo. Why does anyone ever collaborate with him? He's a massively spoiled cunt and a backstabbing faggot who leaks shit from every team project he participates in if he doesn't get 100% his way.
>how many popular games are there that started as community mods?
Half of the shit Valve publishes started life as a mod.
PM was even with melee in popularity at its Apex. No way P+ gets as big before someone in charge notices and it gets shut down again
I play it on my Wii almost exclusively. Get Homebrew and Wii64 Rice and it works perfectly.
where can I find people to play with, /vg/ is all ultimate babies
smash ladder, local tournaments (after corona), and discords
you should make a discord for Yas Forumsirgins
