And they never explained why. Not even to Merle Dandridge herself. You could tell she felt a real connection to the character too from the VNN interview it was actually pretty sad. Maybe because she's half black half Japanese like the character herself

I'm legit going to miss Dandrigde as Merle and THIS particular iteration of the character. The new VA and whatever new thing they have going for Alyx just doesn't connect for me. Perhaps it was the writing too but it all felt too humorous and casual. The voice actress seemed like she was just chilling. The Jeff chapter felt less scary because of it. I felt like at least Dandridge understood the dark tone the series was going for, I think she understood better just how scary life is for people in the half-life universe.

Eh, I'm thinking it was more along the lines of someone getting some favours + she was cheaper than Merle. I doubt anyone wanted to force themselves on her, I mean her lines are still in the game! It looks like a very rushed decision mid-way, which is why its hard to explain.
I hope they invite her back to do it.

Valve has always been one of the few exceptions in that their characters never feel like pandering. Good writing will do that.

I can't speak for the actual gameplay in Alyx having only watched a playthrough, and from what I've seen it really is good, but in terms of writing and voice acting, it killed my interest in Half Life. Alyx's new VA sounds bored, has more of a Portal 2 style of writing, too obvious comedy moments instead of those smaller lines to lighten the mood, and that ending.

I don't think they were bad, but rather something we were not used to with this character, although he does a longish monologue in "Heart to Heart" conversation.
Retconning will always leave that kind of feeling though.

No they weren't. They don't even touch the end of HL2 or EP2.
Gman's lines in Alyx are incredibly blunt, direct replies, devoid of any mystery or possible double meaning behind them. There's very little mystery or otherworldly mannerisms in his dialogue.

Yeah, except you have to give your VA direction as well, if you let her do whatever then this is what you will get. I don't think they really knew how to get back to the character and/or the new people at Valve couldn't grasp it properly, save for Merle, who probably balked at their ham-fisted instructions about the character she more or less created.
