Because pre-rendered 2D backgrounds look like shit.
Because ever since videogames became mainstream and a huge market, the suits took over and ripped the soul out of games in pursuit of maximizing profits.
Artstyle like you posted takes way longer to produce than just pumping models on an engine.
When the market was smaller the industry was full of soul.
That looks retarded
vanillaware is probably the closest you'll get to stuff like legend of mana
in fact, their games have a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses, though I'd say they're mostly better than LoM with exception to the soundtrack since LoM has Yoko
makes me with LoM was good because I do like it's soundtrack and some of it's environments, it's kind of a shame that it's mediocre as a game
this. the soulless money vampires are ripping everything apart that is rudimentary good and has some kind of value to it, not just videogames
legend of mana hd when
What didn't you like about LoM, user?
I personally loved it. The combat was a little basic, but not really any more so than the other Mana games. Focusing on a series of vignettes instead of a large overarching story was really cool imo as well. Made it feel less like a chosen one saving the world and more just someone sent by the Goddess doing their job.
If they do they'd probably give it the middling 3D graphics of the other Mana remakes.
I'd only want a Legend remake if they got the original artist back.
heard their last games were ds games. : (
Don't forget the mobileshit.
I don't know why such a great artist never got more work. Reminds me of Hideki Naganuma, dude did the Jet Set Radio soundtracks and then outside of Sonic Rush never did anything big again.
Oh fuck this game was great, shame it doesn't get talked on Yas Forums that much
Legend of Mana had a tremendously inferior art style to the first three games. This is a hard fact.
damn thats great stuff. i wish they would get more work.
Wrong.
Low IQ post.
I blame the jews
Because they dont need to look like that, the average player is easily presuaded by console graphics and cinematic trailers and therefore will just buy just about anything.
You're right, pic related btfo's Legend of Mana's half-assed aesthetic
it just comes across as soulless without the technical limitations
It comes across as soulless because its a phone game with a shoestring budget
Zoomers should unironically beaten with clubs until their brains work properly
They can, but to pull off a look like that, you have to have the screen kept at a fixed angle, which most people consider lazy or subpar. You can't pull off something like that in a fully 3d environment simply because things don't look that composed from every angle, the same way photographers will carefully choose the angle and lighting for a scenic photograph, and the exact same place in reality can look significantly less pretty from the wrong angle or lighting. Games that continue to use the fixed background style are usually shit on by gamers.
It's been a long time since I played it but it's mostly it's gameplay, it's combat and rpg mechanics. however now that I think about it, I remember the special moves being pretty decent even just mechanically, and I think it was pretty fluid to attack. I can't remember if dodging and blocking even existed. good action rpgs are rare too, I haven't played many, especially 2d ones but now that I think about it it could be one of the best 2d action rpgs, especially for it's time. I would put it above the original ps2 Odin Sphere since that was easily way worse to play, but the remake of Odin Sphere is such a massive refinement. I can't really remember it's story too much either, everything I remember is all subplots revolving around different characters, to the point where I don't even know if there was a main plot. getting items that you placed on the map as areas was a pretty cool idea but it can lock you out of a lot of stuff if you don't place them a specific way and if I remember correctly they mostly acted completely separate anyways so you were able to travel from any area to any other area regardless of their position on the map. might have been cool to have to manually travel but I can easily see that being a terrible idea and can't really think of any way to make it good without completely changing stuff. can't really remember how distinct or balanced the different weapons were
this has really got me thinking since it's been so long since I played it, and 2d action rpgs are a surprisingly interesting genre. even just comparing odin sphere to it's own remake is such a massive difference, now I feel like I need to replay it since it seems really interesting to think on
I understand pre-rendered backgrounds aren't futureproof or really viable at all today given rapidly changing resolutions, but damn do I miss fixed camera angles in vidya. A scene can be made so much more impactful, without needing to take control away from the player, by using deliberate angles.
Hell, even in terms of gameplay, Mira from Baten Kaitos is a masterclass of ideas that wouldn't work with the modern over-the-shoulder view. Pic related is the "labyrinth of mirrors" area, and each little shard is a different perspective of the same room.
>but it can lock you out of a lot of stuff if you don't place them a specific way
That's a valid complaint. That aspect of the map system is never explained or mentioned anywhere in the game, and logically doesn't make much sense, so having it lock you out of quests was bullshit. Probably my biggest complaint with the game. There are other systems, like crafting, that are hopelessly convoluted but they're optional so its a non-issue.
The central story literally is just "put the pieces of the world back together because the Goddess of Mana said so", and all of the more direct subplots are a result of that. It's kinda like Kino no Tabi in that regard.
I can't remember if dodging is a thing but you start out with a handful of actions you can assign to triangle and circle, and by using certain actions in conjunction you unlock more (crouch + jump = high jump, etc). Its another system that's never explained, but once you know about it it can be fun to mess with for a bit.
What game ever looked that bad?
Tales of Eternia was soul .
a lot of what you said made some stuff come back to me, though I don't remember crafting at all
I remember the crouch + jump = high jump stuff and if I remember correctly it was complete bullshit but I should replay to make sure
I do think that a remake like odin sphere's could make this game really good. like exactly the same way too, leaving the original game in with it and all
also Kino no Tabi is on my backlog, I think I'll watch it tomorrow since I should really chip away at my backlogs, both anime and vidya
>equal shading on literally every object on the screen
>impossible for the eye to pick active objects out of the background
>background layers have only the bare minimum of perspective definition
Yep that's a "I don't really know how to make visuals for a video game" starter pack
A Leifthrasir style remake developed by the same core team would be 11/10, but that's a never ever.
I watched Kino for the first time a few months back and was kinda disappointed. I kept thinking it was gonna go somewhere in the end but it never did. Some of the episodes were neat though, and it had a cool atmosphere.
Replaying this again recently makes realize just how fucking clunky the design on this game was.
>Ring menu is fucking trash
>Hitboxes were all over the place
>Exterior maps had extreme amounts of copy-paste and random path designs.
>Interior map designs were fucking garbage with many dead ends, empty houses, and pointless rooms that felt almost alien
Seriously, you have to navigate around the giant horseshoe that is Pandora castle just to get the throne room.
The game's still fun, has great music, and was no doubt amazing at it's time. But, it absolutely aged poorly in some parts.
TOO MUCH COLOR BAD, NEED BE BROWNER AND DARKER ONLY BROWN AND DARK ARE GOOD OTHERWISE IT'S FOR BABIES POST APOCALYPSE MATURE ADULT GUNS
NEED MORE REALISM BECAUSE I AM NOT A BABY YOU CAN'T JUST GO IN A FOREST LIKE THAT YOU GOTTA HAVE POISON GAS MONSTERS FROM POLLUTION AND GAS MASKS AND BARRELS AND TRASH EVERYWHERE THEN IT'S GOOD
unironically kino as fuck
That's Legend of Mana, right? I was never a fan of the game, but it is pretty.
My personal favorite is
>pic related
IT NEED TO BE SCARIER HIGH STAKES LIFE OR DEATH WITH GAS MASK JUST MAKE IT WITH ALL OF THE COLORS BETTER AND YOU CAN PLAY IT AND IT'LL BE GOOD
Legend of Mana was an amazing game, I just finished it on my Vita, using a guide to make sure I got all the events. Should I play the Secret of Mana remake or the original on the Collection of Mana for the switch?
I bought the Collection after only playing Legend, and Secret is honestly shit. Music is fantastic but the gameplay has aged like milk. I played the intro of the remake and while the gameplay was slightly smoother, the weird hitstun combat was unchanged and it was a fucking slideshow on Vita.
For comparison, Adventure is basic but enjoyable in an old-school way and Trials is what Secret wanted to be. Far better graphics, functional combat, and an interesting party-building concept.
YOU NO WANT LITTLE GIRL LITTLE BOY IN FOREST YOU WANT DARK A SCARY BROODY RELIC OF MAN AND HUBRIS AS DARK SCARY POLITCAL MESSAGE ABOUT HUBRIS BECAUSE MAN ARROGANT AND HUBRIS IS BAD AND THAT MUST BE WHY WORLD IS DEAD
I feel like this game is criminally underrated.
Maybe cause it's a shit sequel.
I looove this godamn game I just wish I could co-op this with someone.
YOU DONT WANT HOPPING ENEMIES YOU WANT ONE SICK DOG WHO IS SAD BUT SPECIAL TO SO THAT YOU CAN REMEMBER HOW GOOD LIFE WAS BEFORE THE BOMBS AND BLOOD BUT NOW ITS HARD AND THERES BOMBS AND BLOOD ALL OVER
It is. Triggerniggers literally cannot cope with the fact that Cross tried to do something different as a sequel.
Instead of taking the general music, art and atmosphere for what they are they insist on focusing on muh old cast and the meh battle theme.
See .
That's not all Naganuma has done, although I think this was the last substantial soundtrack he did:
>soundcloud.com
He just did a track for that, right? Hence:
>last substantial soundtrack
but they can
Never forget
You're right, I misread your original post
The game looked good. And the music was good. But it played like hot garbage.
Easily the worst in the series.
I will make this a game someday...
>that shitty dragon pet
>not the based sky dragon
This guy doesn't even play the game
>objectifying background art
ugh, sexists.
