>your average run of the mill vanilla rebellion story >uncompelling setting >boring and easy physics based puzzles constantly being shoved down your throat for the sole purpose of showing off the engine >tons of filler content - the vehicle sections being the worst offenders >gunplay for the most part is plain and unfun >shit character progression since everybody is having a one way conversation with Gordon >lack of weapon variety compared to the first game >horrible pacing issues - small bursts of actiony setpieces and then long spans of droning low quality downtime >terrible audio
It's obvious that HL2 was hailed for it's tech rather than it's gameplay. I loved HL2 at the time, but coming back to it is a chore and you realize the game is a 3.5/5 at the very best. The first game holds up so much better.
Zoomers seethe everyday that games still haven’t been as good as this game and their entire childhood was spent suckling the boomer teat.
Colton Watson
It's over, anti-HL spammer. You lost. Valve is back and HL2 will always be regarded as one of the greatest games of all time.
Oliver Smith
>terrible audio
Nice 80 iq larp
Carson James
To be fair, they had to do the game all over like four times
Alexander Hernandez
Poorfags are still seething about alyx lmao
James Miller
My biggest trouble was reading and seeing too much hl2 beta content and then comparing the actual game to promised gameplay videos. When I played I could only think how cool everything would've been if they had included most of the original concepts.
i played pic related for the first time some 5 months ago >it was good for itstime fuck off, its still good when you compare it to doom or dusk it might seem slow or whatever but thats because its a different kind of game
I played it for the first time last year and loved it. You're just being a fag about it.
Grayson King
I agree with the vehicle filler and the weapon variety, and would like to add in enemy variety too since you cycle through Zombie, Antlion and Combine combat constantly, only one of which actually serves as a consistent threat.
I agree. I played HL1, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift for the first time a few years ago, and loved all three. They were great games, and great fun. Then I played HL2. After how much it had been hyped up for years, I was excited. But it was just a disappointment. It was a good game, but HL1 was a great game. HL2 just had a worse setting, worse plot, worse enemies, and worse weapons. And I'm no anti-Valve shill. I love TF2, L4D, Portal, etc. I just wish that HL2 had lived up to the hype and to HL1.
I think I played it around 2009 or 2010 on the orange box that my roommate had. I had mostly been a Nintendo person so playing it blew my fucking mind. It was TECHNOLOGY moment after moment. Had a blast the whole way through.
Isaac Smith
All of the greentext parts are great and what he's written is incorrect though.
Brandon Robinson
I think Half-Life 2 had one of the coolest and most unique sci-fi setting in all of the genre. It's hard to explain, but the weird alien tech, sounds, different extraterrestrial life forms, the Citadel, head crab probes as a bio weapons, etc, and all of it in contrast with 21st century commie block location on Earth just felt cool as fuck For that reason, it beats HL1 in my view
Xavier Davis
It was more of a current time thing at the time this was valves gem.

OHNONONO JAJAJA
Sebastian Howard
Agreed. I tried replaying it just before the new year and just couldn't get into it.
It's not bad but everything that made it "amazing" IE technical stuff has been thoroughly surpassed.
OG half-life is at least a solid shooter with interesting levels. While also being a good example of the evolution of the FPS genera and videogames as a whole.
I always liked it because it was generic in a way, it used only the best possible game mechanics and put it all in the perfect order of progression. It will always represent the core concept of a game, somehow the industrial mechanical settings are so classic and representative of vidya
Isaiah Edwards
HL1 had a way-cooler setting, though, with the enormous underground lab, the scorching above-ground portions being invaded by the military, and the weird alien dimension you end up in. Way cooler than the shitty generic commie-block bullshit and generic invasion plot of HL2. I'm still mad and will never not be mad.
Michael Lewis
Maybe...
Wyatt Ortiz
2 could of been shorter in parts, but overall I'll always hold up HLF 1 and 2 as examples for devs to follow. Since black mesa came out I've actually been replaying half life 2 and I'm having a pretty good time, not looking forward to episode 1 much though.
Elijah Gutierrez
it was nice , but replaying the game today , i realise how the airboat part is way too long , its legit 1/3 of the game
Matthew Reyes
>could of Are you a retard? Reread that sentence and try to make sense of it.
Hunter Brown
All in the norm....
Wyatt Peterson
>I didn't like the game so it must be bad and everyone else is wrong.
Julian Murphy
>>terrible audio wait what the heck, HL2 is disappointing in many ways but some weapon sounds aside the audio is brilliant
Yeah the airboat chapter gets pretty tedious. A few cool sections like the first helicopter chase but Highway 17 works better since it breaks up the driving sections more and the coastal setting is cooler.
Landon Peterson
"2 could of been shorter in parts"
In reference to Half Life 2, the game in the picture at the top of the thread.
Charles Jones
Shut tha fucc up.
Game is a classic and it's staying that way, old heads will always appreciate this game for what it is and newheads will wish games could get this good again (barring another Half Life ofc).
Adrian Anderson
Actually they still sound pretty good.
Elijah Sanchez
I agree that the black mesa remake is patrician and might be better than hl2 now. but hl1 definitely not.
Justin Brooks
Black Mesa is a masterpiece but it's not actually unambiguously better than HL1.
William Cook
>boring and easy physics based puzzles constantly being shoved down your throat for the sole purpose of showing off the engine You mean game-changing physics puzzles that were never achieved at that level of quality before?
The mona-lisa is also pretty lame now, but at the time it was the best shit in the world.
>The first game holds up so much better They're both tech demos with shit gunplay
Julian Morris
In what possible way is the first game a tech demo? Are you retarded?
Connor Moore
i liked HL2 but I never felt the need to replay it, unlike HL1 which I've gone through a few times despite playing HL1 for the first time after HL2, even HL:A i can see having more replay value and being a more valuable experience on its own, but all the source modding craziness (especially GMod) that came out of HL2 still makes it a very important game to me
Grayson Wilson
You sound like a pro gamer
Grayson Perez
>3.5/5 FUCK OFF DWTERMINATOR SHILL YOUR REVIEWS SUCK
Liam Edwards
you know Yas Forums literally stands for valve right? Valve fans here are smash levels of cancer
Dylan Martin
Makes you wonder if Alyx will be viewed the same way 10 years down the line.
It's better in way of graphics but it also lacks certain fun sections and things. Xen is gorgeous but also misses the point in a couple of places. I like that it is its own thing, though.
