You never "lose" exp unless the unit gaining it is capped out and Marcus isn't capped in either of the games he's in, at least in the chapters you need him most in, and there's no way he will be for a long ass time.

Most magic in FE is just basic elemental attacks and you also need to account for baby mages that only know the most rudimentary spells, which is what most of your magic users will be for a while. Though if you really want a strong magic boy or girl there's no short supply with characters like Ced, Wendell, and Pent running around.
