Golden Sun Reloaded is a mod for the first two Golden Sun games, the purpose of which in the words of its creator "...is to provide a harder and not too straightforward game, meant to be enjoyed by players that are quite knowledgeable with the game mechanics and want to try other things than Megiddo & Summon Rush."
There's a changelog in the link which goes through a lot of what actually changes, but in short the mod focuses on improving the combat system of vanilla by rebalancing some parameters; Enemies are significantly buffed, some gameplay design is altered in order to ward off Summon rushing, classes and Psynergy spell are retooled with new additions and changes.
These changes serve to make the relatively easy combat of vanilla into a deeper, more strategic and rewarding system that allow the core mechanics of the game to shine in a way they never did in vanilla.

Already played GS and want a fresh experience? Absolutely - Just about everyone I've talked to who played the mod recommend it.
Haven't played GS before but still interested? Assuming you have some experience with JRPGs you should be fine. Reloaded is likely a more interesting way for a seasoned newcomer to experience the game than pure vanilla
At the end of the day, its up to you if you want ot mod it or not.

I played through GS1 and had an absolute blast with Reloaded, it really does improve the game once you have to actually think about battles. Golden Sun has a very slick battle system that's undermined by the lack of difficulty in the original games.
I never played through Lost Age with it because I was playing through it in the leadup to Ultimate with all of the optimism of the threads at the time and got burned for turning off my cynicism and getting my hopes up for once. Seeing GS really bummed me out for a long time afterwards.

As much as Dark Dawn ended on a cliffhanger, a remake of the first two games would probably be the best way to push the series back into the spotlight. I'm also a stupid motherfucker who looks at the fact that we haven't heard a thing from Camelot since Mario Tennis came out and deludes himself into thinking that they might be working on something that isn't Mario Golf.

The worst part is that Dark Dawn was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If it had been a 3DS title in the first year or two of that thing's lifecycle it probably would have sold really well because the 3DS was starved for JRPGs.

I've always assumed that the series has been dropped forever due to the bad reception from Dark Dawn. Honestly don't know if I'd want them to attempt a 4th since they seem to have lost sight of what made the first 2 good. Why is that such a common theme with media?

It's been ten years, user. Smaller franchises have come back from worse. To answer your question in Dark Dawn's case it's because a lot of key staff left because they made too many fucking sports games, and then they tried to be both 1 and TLA in the same game and ended up poorly balanced as a result. Eight party members introduced in one game plus not fixing any of the problems with their writing or battle system was a recipe for disaster.

I'd rather suggest it so people know about it since it's a very high-quality mod than remain ignorant of its existence. Personally I prefer the mod to vanilla, not necessarily out of thinking vanilla is bad, but rather that it allows the underlying mechanics shine in a way they never do otherwise.

This is about the dumbest thing I've heard... The series isn't mash X to win just like every other JRPG out there isn't. There are plenty of fights that require planning to survive and the effects of having unset Djinns is apparent for anyone to see. Also, having uneven Djinns will showcase that different Djinn combinations has different effects on your party setup.

It is. You can clear every random encounter by brainlessly mashing X or spamming whatever the strongest spells you have. You can cheese bosses to death by summon rushing or spamming the best unleash you have because most of them struggle to kill you.

Across the entire series, only the final bosses and Dullahan have any chance of realistically wiping you if you have more than room temperature IQ.
Once you reach TLA/DD's endgame, only Daedalus, Iris and Charon are worth talking about. Spamming stuff like Sol Blade and Excalibur end up outpacing the rest if memory serves me correctly.
