The red ones are sunburned from shipwrecks and thus appears red. The blue ones are just an interpretation of normal white skin, appearing blue. Personally I think shes full of shit, but who knows.

Why did the Greeks believe in the very specific pantheon they had, or the Egyptians? The numerous cultural, geographic, environmental, perhaps even genetic factors, that all amounted over a great period of time, happened to produce one novel mythology over another. There is probably not a single point you can say; "This is the moment the Japanese invented so many Yokai and this is the exact reason they did.".
