Like, there's not point for him to mention anything about employers. He doesnt need to play about 'employing' them when he was never gonna give them a choice in being hired, nor even go into detail about what their work will be. What I don't understand is what happens to the Episode 2 Ending Time Line?
Did they pull a star trek and have it go into a new timeline? One where Eli dies and one where he Lives?

If so, that means they've set up Episode 3 to be in the new timeline and retconned episode 2, this actually annoys me, so basically were not going to get the sequel to episode 2 everyone has been waiting for.

It's likely meant to be one single timeline, so yeah, a retcon.

So yes, they reverted back a death for the sake of subverting expectations instead of following through with it. Just because they explain with time travel doesn't make it any less of a retcon. Time travel stories always have to be written very carefully to avoid this. Since Half Life never had any real time travel aspect it comes across as a retcon, not something that was actually planned out from the start. If it was, they would've added a hint at the end of Episode 2 like a flash of light showing up at the very end or something.

So valve decided "fuck it" and retcon Eli's death to make a continuation of their own story
It also goes against what Gman actually does, he makes changes and alters the events without his powers (except teleportation)
like some of the examples are...
